Whereas now, you have titles that go for 3x the price, and for 1080i tv owners, hold little to no reason for an upgrade.
WTF are you talking about? 1080i has exactly the same amount of picture information that 1080p does for film-based content, and it's fucking breathtaking on even a halfway-decent transfer. Comparing a good BD to a good DVD is like comparing DVD to VHS SP. There's absolutely no contest. And that's before you get to the even BIGGER audio upgrade on most titles.

Stopped in Wal-Mart tonight to see if they put out Wii Fit at midnight, and witnessed the most beautiful Blu-Ray display. On the endcap they had the Sony Blu-Ray player and a PS3 side by side with a glowing blue light behind them while a movie was playing on the TV, then a full aisle dedicated to Blu-Ray, with 4 full four-foot sections full of movies and spots for 7 different players. Looks like Wal-Mart is definately embracing HD movies now.
Can someone explain this to me. I do not fully understand this. I have a 65" Mitsubishi 1080P DLP HDTV and a PS3 as my Blu-Ray player, and I'm not sure why it is like this. Some movies take up the entire screen and some have the bars on the top and bottom.
Wow, i don't know whether to be sorry for you for being ignorant or be sorry for you being a moron...

That isnt needed man.

The black bars are there because Blu-ray movies use OAR to display movies. OAR is Original Aspect Ratio. Movies are shot in different ratios, be it 1.78:1 (which fills up your entire screen) or 2.35:1 (black bars on top and bottom). The black bars are there so that the entire image the director wanted is displayed and not chopped off on the sides, top or bottom. You can google for more info.

p.s. - In case you didnt realize it, the black bars are a good thing.

I've slowed down in my BD buying since I don't need more stuff to pack up and move in August - but I did pick up Wrestlemania 24. The video quality is incredible - great color, little pixelation. An overall great package (despite my 2-disc BD case disc grabs being both shattered by the time it arrived at my doorstep).

My one hangup: The WWE logo and on-screen graphics are still formatted for a 4:3 TV. The WWE logo is just hanging out on the middle of the bottom screen. It's pretty annoying.

did you try the wrestlemania blu ray with motion flow on?

i usually have it off but i read its better for it so i tried it out and it definately is
Wow, i don't know whether to be sorry for you for being ignorant or be sorry for you being a moron...
Heaven forbid that I don't know everything.
At the risk of sounding like an idiot, what's motion flow?
adds frames to make it run at more fps (usually 120) and it makes it look 3-D

i know sony tv's have them, not sure about other ones

i think samsung has it but its called auto motion plus or something

it looks really good for sports especially football

Correct. My sammy has the auto-motion plus..

Occasionally though when i have it enabled and watching a bluray movie, sometimes it causes slow down. It works great though with 1080i videos..(and 1080i hd dvd players)

wm24 looks good with it on since its encoded at 1080i

Which is why if you have a TV that doesn't support 1080p, and a very good upconvert DVD player, the cost isn't necessarily worth it.

My father has a Sammy 1080i LCD with a Sony upconvert player via HDMI. The picture is incredible, so is the sound. For him, the added cost of a Blu-ray player, plus the added cost of BDs isn't worth it, and I have to agree. With what he has, I saw no difference in Casino Royale SD vs BD.

If you want the very best, sure. But something like that is more than serviceable, especially when you can get new release DVDs for under $10.

That statement boggles my mind. You don't need HD then.

In my case, and for almost everyone else, it was a huge difference for all my family, even on a shitty 720p off brand LCD.

He doesn't. I will. I'm buying a 1080p set when the time comes.

Even then, I can't see paying 3x the price. Why is that such an issue for everyone to understand?

You said that YOU didn't see the difference.

And you have to be crazy if you think I'm spending 3x of anything for BD movies.
The majority were 15 or less. And I own close to 80.
You said that YOU didn't see the difference.
That's right. I don't see a difference. I don't see the justification in spending the money on titles I already own.

And you have to be crazy if you think I'm spending 3x of anything for BD movies.

Good job. I've spent less than $15 on all my BD and HD purchases. I'm somewhat limited to what I find B&M, though.

And that's probably a very valid point. I hope to pick up Crank before I head back over, I've heard that's a very good title.

I guess I'm more dissuaded from buying titles because almost everything I'd want that's out I already own in some capacity. Some of the few exceptions I can think of is the Pirates trilogy, The Other Boleyn Girl/Axe Murderer (June), Jesse James, Die Hard 4...there's more, but compared to my present library it's not a whole lot. When I worked at Blockbuster, I was able to really expand my collection of DVDs quickly. So much so I have a backlog.

So for me, it's hard spending that money when I will get so little back from the DVD I have afterwards. For releases I don't have, yes...I'm willing to spend $25 on it. I don't feel like saying more on the matter.

I mean, I could understand perhaps if it was Wall Street or something like that Shrike, but Casino Royale is still a lot prettier than the SD, and way more detailed.

if you think casino royale sd upconverted and blurya look the same you might want to get some calbration software for your tv

using factory defaults or even the defaults for "cinema" or "movie" or whatever else your TV offers isn't going to give you the best picture

its really effected by your rooms lighting if any, position relative to TV, height off the ground, etc.

when i first got into HD I was disappointed because I didn't see that much of a difference in video, but once I calibrated my TV and got at the right viewing distance everything changed

some of the sony blu rays already have basic calbration built in on the blu-rays, but i'd download one of these and try it out http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=948496
I mean, I could understand perhaps if it was Wall Street or something like that Shrike, but Casino Royale is still a lot prettier than the SD, and way more detailed.
Oh, I'm not disputing that Casino Royale doesn't look good. It looks much better to me than the SD version, though it's not the top-end picture that titles like Pirates 1 & 2, Ratatouille, Meet The Robinsons, Happy Feet, and HP: OOTP. Any of those make it blatantly obvious the differences between SD & BR.

Canceled my SC as well, i'd rather pay $40 with Blockbuster credit than use my $25 amazon gift card.

I watched Short Circuit today. Looked pretty average for an 80's 2.4:1 movie. Not a bad thing, but not breathtaking or anything.

You would think given that the WWE most likely records an version without the logos embedded that they would of used that for the home video release but placed the WWE logo on the left edge of the 16x9 frame.

Honestly I find the "WWEHD" logo the most annoying. Yeah we get it... its HD..... now get rid of the dumb fucking thing.

OMG. That goes to show how much FOXs pricing sucks. Everyone assumed it was a Fox title, so they jumped on the pre-order because the price was so reasonable.

ROFLMAO

I have a question and sorry if it's a dumb one. Why would you cancel the SC pre-order if MSRP is $39.98 and you've got it pre-ordered for $27.95? Wouldn't you be guaranteed that price whether it goes up or not?

lost s4 blu-ray for about $43 (came out to 43.67 for me) at fye.com after rebate if you're a member

its a little tricky, you have to add to your cart, apply your fye card

then go back to the cart page and apply MEMDAY2008 coupon

if you apply the MEMDAY2008 coupon first, your backstage member discount will overwrite it, but if you use it after it will stack

works on all pre orders too

free shipping, tax though and the mail in rebate is $15 - takes about 2 months to get but i never haven't gotten one from them

they'll pre authorize your card, but won't charge you until it ships

Yes, but it's not as big a savings as we had hoped.
If it were Fox, MSRP would probably have been $69.98 or something.
I have no problem paying that price for Iron Man
Its a crappy standard Paramount price but it didn't stop me from pre-ordering it on the spot last night

Its only 9 episodes. I don't even think fox would charge that much for just 9 episodes.

Firefly is $70 for 14.

So $45 then?

Why am I not surprised? :D

Can anyone explain why the hell Bee Movie is delayed, when it's sitting in the stockroom of every store I went to today??

Both Target and Circuit City told me they have it, but it's been delayed a week and can't sell it? Amazon delayed it to 5/27 too.

I'm a suck for animation on Blu, and really want to support Paramount's return to Blu as well, but it doesn't help if I can't find the damn movie!

Now Amazon is saying June 3rd... wtf?

I pre-ordered the Bank Job and Iron Man together for $51. Since Iron Man doesn't have a release date they will ship the Bank Job on its release date.

The last time I ordered on OOS item with another that was in stock. They rushed the in stock item with super saver. Not really a deal, but it's cool that amazon does that.

Because Paramount set the street date as 5/27... or is it 6/3 now..... who knows but you would think that given the DVD is out already that they would but I guess they want to make people wait for no reason. Ironically they did not put an street date on "Blades Of Glory" or "Next" that matter on Bluray.

Think about how HD-DVD supporters like me felt when they pulled the plug a few days prior to its release. At least its being released on Bluray.

*looks at his LG BH-200*

Yeah.... I'm Purple now.

Are they still taking three months to send stuff out? Or was that just for their HDs?
