Wow..Bush is really pushing it with "signing statements". Basically these are addenda which explains what part of a Bill he won't follow. With the torture law, he was above in certain cases. When he re-authorized the Patriot Act, he included an addendum saying that he did not feel obliged to obey requirements that he inform Congress about how the FBI was using the act's expanded police powers.

Seriously, does this not scare the crap out of you.

Besides the obvious constitutional problems (it Congress that makes laws) and utter hypocrisy (remember the dust up about judges legislating from the bench?), the rationale Bush uses is beyond the pale.

Sure presidents have used them in the past from the benign to a defacto line item veto and never before has it been used like this . Bush is not simply objecting to an act of Congress but the authority of Congress and Judicial review.
