CAG Socom Thread-SONY SHUTTING DOWN SERVERS AUGUST 31 for S1-CA Tue&Sun10pmEST

Good games last night. I'm pretty excited for the patch and the possibility of some new maps in the the near future. I'll be out of town until Wednesday or Thursday evening but I'll be on as soon as I can get 1.5 installed.

Here is a Guide to SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals Confrontation

I have plenty of friends that have the game just never invested any amount of time into it because of it's steep learning curve...

This Guide is to help Newbies get used to the basics of SOCOM play...

KNOW YOUR MAPS

This honestly is what makes elite SOCOM players shine above the rest in the crowd...There is nothing better than have the advantage of knowing where every piece of scenery is to find cover when needed or to blow up an object to kill an enemy

CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS

Many new players do not know the advantages of altering your game/controller settings

Tips:

1) Go to Game Options and change your camera setting to "Classic"... this allows you to see much more area around you and makes camping (when need be) much more efficient

2) Go to Wirelss Controller Settings and Change your settings for your Look Speed, Acceleration, Dead Zone
- "Look Speed"... Move bar all the way to the RIGHT (max)
- "Acceleration"... Move bar all the way to the RIGHT (max)
- "Dead Zone"... Move bar all the way to the LEFT (none)

USE ARMOR/WEAPONS THAT WORK FOR YOU

1) Everyone has their own play style..so use the weapons/attachments/armor that you find to best fit you (personally i like light armor torso and heavy armor legs)... Many people prefer light armor due to the speed advantage

2) To get used to aiming i recommend using a SUB MACHINE GUN... the cross hairs on these guns have a small circle radius..hence making focusing on your target easier... As you get more used to the aiming in the game swich to guns that match your playing style

3) While i said before to use what works for you i recommend NOT using a lasersight, it gives away your posistion..and stealth is key in this game

List of Commonly Used Weapons

Seals
- M4A1
- M14
- HK36
- IW 80-A2 (SAS Faction)
- FAMAS G2 (RPIMA Faction)
- HK7

Mercenaries
- AK-47
- 552
- F90
- STG 77

MISC. TIPS FOR DURING GAMEPLAY

1) COMMUNICATE**** very very important....without good communication your team is bound to fail, Use the areas that i listed above for calling out enemies so your team can help you

2) FOCUS ON OBJECTIVE & KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PLAYING: far too often i see people simply camping back..not helping out the rest of their team..the objectives are what make you win the game...not sitting back hiding from the enemy

3) STICK TOGETHER: being singled out is almost a guranteed recipe for disaster

4) Watch for a HOT GUN: a "hot gun" or a "Guns Up" in SOCOM means that as your character is walking around he will suddenly bring is gun up to his face as though he is aiming into it. This means that an enemy is VERY close to you and that you should watch out... (This is a GREAT way to find campers) Make sure you call out your hot gun location for your team.

5) Do the Shuffle!
- A common tactic used in this game is called the "SOCOM shuffle" this is simply shuffling back and fourth when in a gun fight in order to keep your enemy from getting a clear shot on you (which is why we lowered your Dead Zone earlier)

6) Don't Waste Ammo!
- Your ammo in this game is limited and your clips do not fully replenish with a reload like on games such as COD or RSV2, once you come back to your clip that you used earlier you are stuck with the amount of bullets you had in it when you reloaded previously, This tip also means to shoot your gun accurately do not just "pray and spray"... try shooting your gun in bursts...this is more accurate and often more efficient than holding down the trigger, especially from a long distance

7) Watch for votes
- Voting in SOCOM is often used to help dead players communicate to alive players. A vote means that there is an enemy either behind or near your team mate or yourself. If you have a vote called on you look behind you, and return the favor to your team mates...Be careful not to vote them out however.

8)Demolition Tips

How to Win (Seals): Plant the bomb, Difuse a Planted bomb, Kill all enemies
How to Win (Mercs): Plant the bomb, Difuse a Planted bomb, Kill all enemies

- If you are the last alive and the other team has you very outnumbered (5+ people) and you are on the other side of the map from the bomb plant...commit suicide in order to keep the enemy from planting..(plants are what break the ties) it is cheap but it can save your team in the long run
- Be smart about planting (make sure the area is clear!)
- Tell your team that you are planting if you are
- Make sure there is someone watching your plant site for your team..(sneaky plants stink
16x16_smiley-sad.gif
)

9) Extraction Tips

How to Win (Seals): Extract Hostages, Kill all enemies
How to Win (Mercs): Kill All Enemies, Allow round time to reach 0:00

Merc Tips
- DO NOT allow the Seals to extract the hostages if you are on Mercenaries...if the Seals are extracting and you cannot kill all of the Seals or run up to the hostages and tell them to "follow" you before the extraction timer runs out KILL THE HOSTAGES..they decide tiebreakers and a killed hostage for your team is much better than letting the enemy extract
- Use the Hostages as cover...When playing EXTRACTION (not Escort) neither team wants to kill the hostages so if you the hostages in front of you and the enemy is shooting at you they may kill the hostages on accident...if the enemy kills the hostages thats good for your team
16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
...make sure you don't kill them though lol
- Get the hostages quickly at the beginning of the round and hide them in a closed area
- Do not force anything...remember the Commandos need to either extract or kill your team to win, if you can stay alive without them extracting then you win

Seal Tips
- Make sure there is at least 30 seconds on the game clock when trying to extract hostages when on seals side...if game time runs out before extraction time the mercenaries win
- Use the Hostages as cover...When playing EXTRACTION (not Escort) neither team wants to kill the hostages so if you the hostages in front of you and the enemy is shooting at you they may kill the hostages on accident...if the enemy kills the hostages thats good for your team
16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
...make sure you don't kill them though lo

10) Elimination Tips

How to Win (Seals): Kill all enemies
How to Win (Mercs): Kill all enemies

- Stay alive ... you only need one person on your team alive to have the match draw out if you are not in posistion to win, draws play a very strategic part in this game mode

11) Escort Tips

How to Win (Seals): Extract the VIPs, kill all enemies
How to Win (Mercs): Kill the VIPs, kill all enemies

Seal Tips
- BE VERY CAREFUL with the VIPs...it doesn't take much for these guys to die and well a death of VIP is how the Mercs Win. Make sure you have several people guarding/escorting them at all times
- When extracting a timer will go off..as soon as this starts remove the hostages from the extraction area and out of harms way IMMEDIATELY...the VIP's will run back to the extraction by themselves when needed to (about 5 seconds left on timer)

Merc Tips
- Kill The VIPS... that is top priority
- Watch the Extraction areas
- Do not force anything...remember the Commandos need to either extract or kill your team to win, if you can stay alive without them extracting then you win

12) Supression Tips

How to Win (Seals): Kill all enemies, or have more kills than the opposing team
How to Win (Mercs): Kill all enemies, or have more kills than the opposing team

- Very similar to a "Team Deathmatch"
- Travel in Groups
- Be careful with your life, do not go out in the open and risk being shot, remember the team with the most kills wins

13) Control Tips

How to Win (Seals): Kill all enemies, capture all control points, have more control points than enemy at 0:00
How to Win (Mercs): Kill all enemies, capture all control points, have more control points than enemy at 0:00

- Focus on capturing the points they are top priority
- Do not attempt to grab a point alone unless you are FOR SURE the area is clear (watch for snipers)

14) TIE BREAKERS

Elimination - Commandos always win a tie
Demolition - Bomb Plants, Difusals if plants are tied, Player kills if plants and difusals are tied
Control - Control Points captured, Player Kills if control points captured is tied
Supression- Number of Player kills
Breach - Same as Demolition
Extraction - Extracted hostages, killed hostages if extracted is tied, Player kills if extracts and killed hostages is tied
Escort - Extracted Hostages, Assassined hostages if extracts are tied, Accidental Seal VIP kills if extracts and assassinations are tied, Player kills if previous 3 are tied

...confusing i know

15) Clans
- Each clan belongs to its own "Faction" There are seveal Factions which include the U.S., French, British, German, and Spanish
- Each Faction get their own specific weapon for the seals side (depending on your faction one of these guns will be available to you
* U.S.: SFCR-LW (Assault Rifle)
* French: FAMAS G2 (Assault Rifle)
* British: IW 80-A2 (Assault Rifle)
* German: GMP (Sub Machine Gun)
* Spanish: AMELI (Machine Gun)
- Each Faction also has their own custom armor skin...just for looks doesn't affect armor strength
- If you are in a clan you have a clan rank. This rank goes up as you play and win games. Be careful however, leaving a game early harms your "Clan Rank" hence making it hard to raise it.
- To be able to recruit people to your clan you need to either be the Leader or an Officer
- Leaving or disbanding a clan resets your Clan Rank, however being kicked from the clan does not

16) Freezing ---Very important

- Okay now this is not a gameplay tip...more of a PS3 tip, but it has a very strong connection to SOCOM Confrontation. This game often freezes for people during gameplay (some people more than others). It is very similar to your computer freezing and you having to shut it down. Most people when they freeze either hit the power switch on their ps3 or put their finger on the power area for about 10 seconds until your ps3 shuts down. Instead of turning off your ps3 with a hard shut down just simply eject your SOCOM disc by pushing the eject button. By doing this your ps3 will unfreeze and your ps3 will restart with no hassle. By doing this you preserve your ps3 from being damaged (especially the power supply) and it is also faster this way
16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

MOST IMPORTANTLY.....HAVE FUN!

Comments on this guide:

2) Go to Wirelss Controller Settings and Change your settings for your Look Speed, Acceleration, Dead Zone
- "Look Speed"... Move bar all the way to the RIGHT (max)
- "Acceleration"... Move bar all the way to the RIGHT (max)
- "Dead Zone"... Move bar all the way to the LEFT (none)

I strongly disagree with these settings, this is way way too twitchy for anyone new to learn. It would give you an advantage in the end but learning to play this way is going to be very hard and take a really long time.

Use the Hostages as cover...When playing EXTRACTION (not Escort) neither team wants to kill the hostages so if you the hostages in front of you and the enemy is shooting at you they may kill the hostages on accident...if the enemy kills the hostages thats good for your team.

This is a great tip, if your the only merc left on an extraction map and there are multiple commandos left lay down between the hostages. I have personally won matches by having stupid commandos kill hostages trying to kill me.

dose this game work now i might have to try playing it again. the last time i tryed to play was a month after launch and i nearly pulled out all my hair. thanks for the noob tips posted above im sure it would help. btw would it benifit me join a clan so members could help with learning the ropes or should i learn to get good on my own? id appretiate a invite to the cag clan my psn name is bigkahunaburgers thanks again for the info.

I agree with the Look Speed, Acceleration, and Dead Zone settings being a bit too sensitive for newcomers. Small increments is the way to go until you find something comfortable.

I tried using the laser with the M14 last night but I think the added twitching from being paranoid that someone would see the beam sneaking up on them canceled out any accuracy bonus.
Also it didn't help that MisterB headshotted me instantly in the first round using it. :nottalking:

I picked the game up today. Thanks for posting the tips smiggity! I hope to play with you guys for a short bit tomorrow.

I'll be there tomorrow , the game is currently installing, then I have to download updates and then another one tomorrow. Screwed.

Patch is Up, 578 MB.

From SOCOM.com Forums: (Updated, my comments in red)
- New ingame Music.
- Roll & Jump is Gone.
- Menu Screens are faster.
- Cannot switch swides in the lobby when you join a game in progress.
- Smoke in the beginning of the round is practically gone.
- D.E. is just like in SOCOM 2. (Big Recoil)
- Clan Tags in game and on the scoreboard.
- Reloading over ruble seems to be working fine.
- Quick Swap, you can run and switch weapons.
- Assign, you can also assign your weapons for quick select. (Going to take a little while to get used to this)
- Quarantine (ESCORT) - Water drained in the middle at the start of the map.
- Medium scope has been fixed, crosshairs are red in the middle.
- Lag or Latency drastically improved!
- Grenades seem to work a lot better.
- If 60% people have greened up in the lobby, it automatically launches a countdown.
- Clan Awards - Simply go to your clan and click on awards.
- Headsets are LOUDER.
- Loading into the game and after the game is faster.
- Now you can get automiatic pop-ups notifying of messages.
- Sound Quality is much better if you're using standard TV speakers.
- Footsteps are louder, you can hear people sneaking up around you!
- Ladder climbing sound is dumbed down so you dont hear it across the map.
- Hostages run/follow smoothly now.
- Now you can see Armor Value, Encumbrance and Mobility when choosing.
- VOTES show up late so dead guys can't tell you to turn around. (Huge Change)
- The lasers still show up through walls, but the transparency is very low.
- You can now choose 8v8 or 16v16 in QUICK MATCH.
- You can now VOTE people out who have not joined the game and who are spectating. (Easier to keep rooms clear)
- In Control Points..the Points are no longer "ghost" through the map, only when you're close...you have to use your map to find them.
- Target spotting will now default to OFF in all ranked games.
- No LOSS OF SOUND reported YET! (I have not lost sound yet)
- You can now shoot through the netting of Frostfire by Merc Spawn.
- Game Details, lobby menu shows what time of day the map is before it starts. 1 Example.
- BOMB PLANTS DO NOT COUNT ANYMORE TOWARDS THE WIN. If tied at 4-4 then it comes to kills, like suppression. (This also applies to Extract/Escort)
- M203's, RPG's, GLS & AT-4 HEATS as of now are in Quick Match ONLY Ranked Rooms. (Wondering if this is a bug or not)

Removed Claymore Comment: After planting a claymore you press the fire rate button and it switches to the detonator. Thank god they didn't mess with my favorite weapon in the game.

Also, big bug with regard to lobbies. You cannot pick your team if you enter a lobby with a game going on, it will not allow you to switch teams. This is good, no more 8v3 because a whole clan jumped to one side. THE BUG is that when the game ends and you get back to the lobby you still cannot switch teams, you have to leave the room and come back in to be able to switch teams.
My Problem: With the new weapon wheel, I cannot seem to pick my claymore detonator, there are only four spots, the claymores and detonator take up the same spot. I hope this doesn't mean I have to plant them all before I can choose the detonator.
I believe that's how it was in SOCOM 3...

MD you are going to love this patch. 1 hit kills with L96 is soooooooooooo good. Just took down 3 guys in a group trying to rush me, just hit the chest and they die. The new medium scope is awesome.

BIG EDIT: ITS LOOKING LIKE 5.1 MIGHT HAVE BEEN FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey is the download slower than usual for the rest of you guys?
Probably due to the maintenance that is happening to PSN right now.

I downloaded it a few hours ago and it was fine.. it took like 10 minutes.

Why in the hell do they do a playstation network update in the middle of the day. Now you can't even play any game online, its been going on for several hours now. Well back on topic, I should be on socom tonight, and I will try to get some more friends to play today.

Do you guys still get a pretty good crowd on clan nights and how is this game's online community? I finally picked it up recently, but I wasn't sure if I'd keep it. If there is a good online atmosphere though I think I'd like to start getting involved.
No patch for me, instead I get the YLOD
Noooooo!!!!

Yeah we get good numbers. 10-15 CAGs on game nights, which is increasing daily. The community has about 12000 on every night, which should drastically go up now. The players are all older males 20-40 pretty much. Not many young ones on Socom

Cool well I'm installing the game now. I don't know if I'd be much use in clan matches any time soon, but I'm going to try and get up to speed on things so I can hopefully join in the future.

WTF is with PS3s breaking this month? I'm getting scared to turn mine on.

It sounds like the game has finally been patched to the point of where it should have been in the 1st place. I'm glad that /6 never gave up on the game(I don't think the socom community) would let them and it looks like they are going to keep at it with the free DLC and another patch coming in the future.

I was really turned off by the initial launch reviews. But the thing about Slant 6 that has impressed me is not the continued support --which was to be expected-- but the fact that this was their first major 3rd Person Shoot, and first game on the PS3. Now add to the fact that SOCOM fans haven't really been happy since SOCOM 2 came out and Slant 6 had a lot to live up to. So hearing that patch 1.50 has basically brought the game up to the point where it's playable/fun makes me very excited to get my PS3 Slim (as soon as Kmart takes it off of pre-order and just reg. order). The only problem I foresee is the lap of maps...and I really don't want to spend more money on map packs :(

I love how the patch notes seem like no issues of this YET.

The software engineer in me shudders to think what the code for this looks like.

I going to try and make it tonight, I just gotta make sure I get everything up and running ahead of time.

Man, now I gotta try and get in on some games tonight instead of trying to play Batman AA.

Footsteps are louder, you can hear people sneaking up around you!
I think this is probably my #1 improvement because I can't say how many times it pissed me off to no end when someone was able to walk right up behind me and stab me when on COD I can hear them coming and have a fighting chance.

The lack of maps is not a problem. I have over 200hrs played and still get killed from spots Ive never been. Shit is dense.

Also word on the street increasingly points to the fact that Confrontation is the backbone for Socom 4, much like 3 and CA. So in the end if this is just a decent 3rd person engine thats gravy.

Could whoever sent me the clan invite send it again? I was getting some weird errors and wasn't able to accept properly I don't think. Since my net connection isn't behaving tonight I won't be on, but I'll try to get some time in and be ready for the next clan session.

I'm eagerly awaiting SOCOM...4 (technically it would be 6) by Zipper...but I have a feeling we won't see that for a while considering they are working on MAG.

wow, patch is pretty sweet....how the hell do you assign your weapons for quick select? its probably super obvious but keep in mind i'm half retarded.
wow, patch is pretty sweet....how the hell do you assign your weapons for quick select? its probably super obvious but keep in mind i'm half retarded.
You highlight the weapon you want and then press your quick select button. There are two little circle icons to show what two weapons are your current quick select weapons.

It's like a real game now! The instant fade-in/not having to program the quick select at the start easily extends my alive time by like 10%.

I was getting some really weird network connection errors (it kept saying "problem connecting to network, some community features may not be available"). Anybody else having this issue? I couldn't see anybody online in-game either (like Goldbug or any of the regulars), so something was up because I know they were smoking that SOCOM crack last night.

I just had Comcast dial back my bandwidth to save some scrilla, so maybe it jacked with my IP address or ports when they reset it yesterday. I was able to download the patch just fine, which is puzzling.

Ignore those messages, they don't mean anything, its a warning saying your invites might not work, but they do 99% of the time.

FAMAS is still broken. Just got sniped from across the map. Also was wondering what is up with the ranks? I've played a couple of games and I'm up to a 28??? I'm also going to wait awhile before switching back to the 5.1. Everything else seems pretty cool but the head shot count seems to be really high. Both in the respawn room and the ranked room I was in.
Wow I played like shit on that Clan match. 1 kill is a joke. Good to see you back gold
Yeah that was some laggy ass shite (to use the word the people we were playing would use lol). It's not an excuse but why were they on the north american ladder? We would have easily one the one round if it weren't for the lag.
