CAGcast #76: Multiplayer Beta

I'm surprised both Wombat and Cheapy said something good about a PS3 game on air. I still can't believe that Wombat's still surprised that Insomniac waited to get Ratchet and Clank out this fall. You'd think that he doesn't like what he's seeing of their second gen game and that they were able to build the engine and all that good stuff before they worked on R&C Future. How many more times can you keep bitching about that? Until Tools of Destruction comes out? :p

I'm surprised you both couldn't find anything to like about Uncharted. It's not just Tomb Raider with a guy, but with elements of Gears of War, RE4, and other highly reviewed games. Most anyone that played the game in person loved it and it was routinely called the Game of the Show. No PSP talk from the Gamers Day? Now I know you two are just going to ignore that system for whatever reason you can find.
Wombat, if you want great platformers, the PSP has plenty of them for you (Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Loco Roco).

About sucking at the Halo 3 beta, the 1up Yours guys talked about that whole idea of having trouble sticking to an online game when you feel like a noob in a sea of experts.

We should be condemning third person shooters for not having online? How does Ratchet and Clank fit into that, as it won't have multiplayer, which was extremely boring at best in previous versions.

At least the show is at least 4 times as good without lag or a chat.

Edit: Forgot to mention that that prank call imitating Bill Cosby was just horrible and had to skip past it. Bleh.

I just wanted to say from the viewpoint of a relatively new CAGster, that it was a great live show. I would of loved to join in on the live chat and calls. And darn it, I knew the first three songs you played instantly! GRRR!!! Anyway, love the show, and I hope you try this out again. Maybe this time Mrs. Cheapy will help screen the calls. ;)

I agree with Wombat about online FPS games. I played through Halo, but I always sucked at Halo 2 multiplayer. After awhile it was no use because others were so much better than me. You have to memorize the maps and get the best weapon to have any success. Whenever I play I just want to use the main gun and shoot people down, but it seems that I can unload shot after shot and my opponent does not die, while they shoot me once or twice and I'm dead.

Playing the Halo 3 Beta is more of the same -- everyone is so much better and I can't catch up. I had the same problem when fighting games were the "MOTS" genre. I casually played Street Fighter 2 but I could never come close to beating quality players.

I'm a huge fan of gaming and have been playing since '82, but even I can't play these online games successfully. Wombat and I are just about the same age, so maybe it's a common problem for gamers who grew up playing the NES through Sega Genesis/SNES systems and are in their late 20's/early 30's. That's probably the same reason we don't enjoy movies like Spider-man 3 and are so critical of current films, because we've seen better ones in the past, like Superman, the original Transformers show, Electric Blue, and so forth. :)

i missed the live show cuz i was busy, but i'll be there fior the next one!

i got a thought on this podcast tho. WHY did Cheapy brush off Wombat's PS3 impressions again? i kinda wanna hear his updated opinion about it. he was going somewhere and then Cheapy cut him off. Wombat was complaining this time. dammit.

anyways, nice job. i really liked this format even tho it was live. you guys did a fantastic job. more live shows please! ^^

btw, when Cheapy cut off one of the callers for calling in about the wrong topic, that was hilarious. it was like Howard Stern, lol...

Loved the show.. I like the idea of the live show. I am sure it will get better and better as time goes on and you get used to the system.

I agree with Cheapy that the Forza2 demo was a letdown. It clearly doesn't really give you a good look as to what the full game will be.I did have fun with it but honestly if I was not a huge fan of the first title then even as big a racing game fan as I am I would probably pass on it.

And of course I agree with Wombat on the Halo3 thoughts.. I did not play it but I know that there is no way it would be too fun since I am not that good and honestly there is no way to get much better unless you can really put up with lots of time learning and not having to much fun (games are supposed to be fun. I can have a crappy time at work and at least I get paid).

Well keep up the good work. Hope I can make it to a live show sometime.

Cheapy and Wombat-

The caller hang-up was HILARIOUS! Just thought that was so funny.

However, I must agree with Wombat with what he said about HAVE vs. BUY on the PS3. I'd love to HAVE a PS3, and I'd not like to BUY a PS3, especially at that pricey $600.

On Blu-Ray movies, have any of you watched Casino Royale?? That's such a fucking awesome movie.

Also, Cheapy is making me jealous! I don't even HAVE a 360 OR a PS3. Sorry my birthday was in March. Maybe a BELATED birthday gift is in order...

"Texting is for teenage girls"--LOL hilarious. And I know one who was rude enough to text-message someone during a concert of Christmas music.

And Starcraft 2 > A new pair of glasses.

DJ Steel, You are right I was going to google that while I was writing and then got in a hurry. That was a great movie

Loving the Live show. I do like Interactive CAGcast. I hope you keep at it and make it happen one day.I am glad you are enjoying your PS3 Wombat. This fall will be the best fall for PS3 and PSP owners. Sidenote:CheapyD they are releasing muliplayer for your Japanese Motorstorm.

I have to say, on Crackdown, the pay content isn't that bad. I'm a little more surprised that they didn't just charge $5 for each piece to be honest as they would both be worth the money.

I do disagree with CheapyD those guns aren't useless, actually they are totally overpowered, perhaps you haven't tried the rocket launcher with 100 shots, or held down the trigger on the automatic gun for long enough. But those guns are insane

Oh and I love the show but I'm not sure about it being live, perhaps give it a while longer, but I do like Gamespots way of playing pre-screened recorded messages

Loved the show even though I wasn't able to catch it live. Funny as hell and it was very refreshing hearing Wombat on his PS3 first impressions since CheapyD bashes it most of the time. Just started playing Resistance: Fall of Man and have to agree that the game is great in its own way.

Keep up the good work and can't wait till next week.

Long time listener, first time commenter.

I actually wanted to talk about that Marvel VS System game (so I guess this post is for you Wombat). I have to warn you that if you had no idea what you were doing while playing it the first time, you won't probably have any idea what you have to do for the next few weeks or so. The reason I'm saying this, is that I have been playing the real VS System TCG (with real cards and stuff) for about 2 years or so. And I have to say that it's probably THE hardest TCG yet. Forget Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic The Gathering or WoW TCG, all those games are easy when compared to VS System. Like I said, I've been playing the TCG fo about 2 years, and I only have a very vague understanding what I'm doing. But the game is great and I was very thrilled to hear that you bought the game and I hope to hear about it on the forthcoming podcasts.

But as always, great show. I love pretty much anything Wombat says and I love the show overall. Keep up the great work.

Ever played Star Wars CCG?

I think the wrong phase is used here. Can't catch up should replaced with I don't want to put the time in. Nothing wrong with that. But you could probably catch up if you wanted to. Same with Wombat. NOt that I play Halo or anything. I don't have the time to be good at more than 1 online game. So that's what I do. PLay 1 mostly and a few others very casually amongst friends.
Ever played Star Wars CCG?
The one by Decipher? :) Hell, I still have my cards from back in the day. Vader/Tarkin... unstoppable duo. So does the Marvel game play like that?

Cheapy,

How can you hate on "gold editions?" You said something along the lines of, now you know to wait on activison games for the Gold Edition.

They way I see it, Gold Editions are just like price drops. The publisher, or whomever, is just trying to come up with a way to get more people to buy its game. You know that anytime you buy a game, a few months from now the price will drop - and that is what happens w/the Gold Editions game. The price of the game drops by 10 bucks, so then they include the 10 buck download content and sell 'em both for 59.99.

I think the Gold Edition is a very smart move on their part. I mean, it looks like Gold Edition games get way more press/advertising than the typical price drop does - and the more your game is in the public eye, the better chance of someone picking it up.

I agree it may seem frustrating as a consumer, but if you think of it as a price drop, it is really no different than any other game. And being a CAG, we all know that if you wait after the games release date, you will eventually get a better deal...

I agree, My Xbox Live record for Street Fighter III 3rd Strike is pretty bad. I think out of like 1000 matches I played, I won maybe 300. But playing over and over and over with different people can help you grow as a gamer. It's similar to chess. A noob at chess might know the rules, but can't beat an acomplished player...yet. It takes a lot of losses to become good.

Great show as usual guys. It was a very good job with a trial run of a live show. If you upgrade your equipment, I would love to see this be a weekly thing. I've only listened to the last 25 episodes or so but the hang up was about the funniest thing I've heard (it's tied with vagina clown.)

Wombat, Cheapy, and anyone else interested in the Marvel TCG game, as you can see by my sig, I am fairly experienced with VS System (played in 3 of the 10 VS Pro Circuits) so I am always available for help or advice if you need it. While VS may have a steeper learning curve than most CCG's, it is the most rewarding and fun CCG there is out there. The challenge is what makes it fun for me, much less "topdecking" to win games (looking at you Yugi) and it rewards you for strategic thinking. It's my favorite card game alonside poker.

Plus, I like playing cards with images of Marvel/DC folks vs. random fantasy characters (WoW/Magic.)

Edit: This is the old online demo of the game. It's not on the main VS pages anymore but I did some digging and found it. It will help you with the general rules and process of the turn a little better than the game's tutorial.

Probably my least favorite cag cast ever.

And I have been listening since the first few.

Your attitudes, combined with the live show, combined with the brainless callers addon, some very bad PS3 coverage and CAC hate, equaled a pretty bad cagcast.

Sorry guys. I know you got better in you. But this was a disaster.

Good show overall, but I think the live shows should be special once a month events. It kind of throws off the flow with regard to Wombat and Cheapy riffing on each other.

Cheapy- Time to turn some of that Playasia credit into cash and get a new computer.

I agree, I will give them a pass though since they were trying out the live stuff. I agree with Wombat, Cheapy is a 360 fanboy. He should just change his name to CheapyD360 :)

One other thing I forgot to mention, Wombat complains about the memory card adapter, but IIRC Microsoft didn't even give you an option to transfer your old saves over.

that's not being rude, that's keeping it real

Been listening since #1. Don't have any problems with any of the shows. Always look forward to the next episode... so with a week off, I had to resort to listening to the Joystiq podcast. Not bad, but not as good as the CAGcast.

The live call-in show was entertaining, but I'm sure will only get smoother with time.

Because of the talk of Puzzle Quest, I picked it up a couple of weeks ago and paid full price. I'm hopelessly addicted to what I call "Puzzle Crack." So, I was laughing when Wombat called it the same. I've got a level 50 warrior. And will keep playing until I beat the game. I'll probably be a sucker for any other "crack-like" games you guys recommend.

I think it was a fine attempt at connecting with the listeners and making us feel like more of a part of the CAG Cast. It is a great idea and will only get smoother with time, also we as the listeners can make it run more smoothly if we pay attention to what's being said and not bring up topics that have been discussed almost an hour prior. Overall great job guys and I will be listening next week live or not.

I gotta say, the show is usually good and all, but I think this weeks was the best in a long time. and you know why, because it was live, that was really cool i think. I hope you continue to do live shows and I might even try to hear it live next time. keep up the good work.

cant beleive people are still crying about this but it does make me laugh :)

No, it was a choir concert in a beautiful performance hall. She couldn't keep her fucking eyes off her cell phone the ENTIRE SHAQ FUING TIME, and I was the one sitting next to her slimy ass. To me, it was worse than talking on your damn cell phone in the movie theater.
