Can video be played on PS3?

Is there anyway to get divx, xvid, or more importantly mkv files to play on PS3? Maybe through conversion? Im really interested in mkv because I want to be able to play 720p content. I would also like to play 1080p .mov files, as well as 1080p wmvhd files. Any help is much appreciated.

I believe that you can use a program such as pspware to convert the movies and then put them on a memory stick the same way that you do a PSP.
