Can you play japenese ps2 imports on american ps3??

It may be a dumb question, but I have heard pS3 is region free and I would love to play fire pro wrestling and the pride fc gp.

I don't expect to see Sony release a firmware update that allows you to play other region PS1 and PS2 games.

However, I'm hoping there is some untapped potential in the ability to install other operating systems on the PS3. I sold my JPN PS2 months ago, so I really hope that something happens, so I can get my Vib-Ribbon on.

I do hope for some "homebrew" headway in the PS3 department.
Look at all what the lil PSP can do now.
