Hi. I've recently been collecting vinyl. I find it more satisfying listening to records when I am at home. That, on top of using my ipod for listening music in the car and just about everywhere else. Any other avid vinyl collectors out there? I support my local music store but find that I often pay a premium for vinyl records. Anyone know of a place to buy records at a discounted price? Thanks!

Any type of music in particular? Sometimes you can order them direct from the band's webstore/their label's webstore. If not, I usually get mine from the following sites
http://www.vinylcollective.com/
http://www.insound.com/
http://www.interpunk.com/
Even Hot Topic (website and B&M) has some good vinyl every now and then. I just picked up the Scream-Still Screaming re-issue from them for about 3.99 during their 50% clearance sale.
And for other stuff, I usually scour my local swapmeet (usually for older stuff) and Amoeba.

Thanks. Some of that is a bit too underground for me. I listen to mostly indie rock. I was really looking more for bargain basement type deals. These stores seem nice, but I wasn't really able to find anything for the price I was looking for. Thanks for your help. I will visit these site in the future.

Try looking at Goodwills ... almost if not every one I have been to sells vinyls. I believe for about 50 cents or a buck each as well.

Savation Army's carry them too and of course your flea markets .... this is where I would start. When it gets to yard sale season hit those up as well.

There is a bargain section on vinylcollective, it's not that much but it's got some good records. Other than that try ebay, unless it's a limited pressing records on ebay can go for next to nothing.

And as a avid record collector my advice to you is to never get started. I got hooked on vinyl and ever since I've been spending way to much cash collecting all kinds of limited pressing and bands complete discography's with all pressings. Shit gets expensive.

Lol. But it sounds good and it gives you that warm, classic feel.

Here it goes!

While not the best site in the world http://usedrecordsandmore.com/ is a good site for cheap vinyl. He packs and grades his stuff very well but his selection is definitely not the greatest in the world. I would go this route if you are a casual listener.

For new stuff i buy from http://store.acousticsounds.com/ . They are not cheap but there prices are on par for retail i guess. I have bought stuff from them before and it all arrives in great condition. I do not know about there used items.

As for finding cheap, newer vinyl you might be hard pressed. I have had some luck at goodwill and most of the time you can talk them down in price if you buy a lot of items. One time i found a ton of police, black sabbath, Yngwie Malmsteen, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Fleetwood Mac etc. and they wanted 2 bucks a record. I went and talked to one of the staff memembers there and told them i would be buying about 30 records and they gave them to me for $1 a pop. All of them looked like they had never been played and they were from some place called Pickles records.

If you are ever in Houston, I shop at 2 local shops. My favorite is Black Dog Records as there selection/quality is amazing. These guys only put out the best records. The second would be Cactus Music and Record Ranch. They have some good stuff, mostly over priced by 4 or 5 bucks for new stuff but there selection of new records cant be beat in Houston. As for there used stuff it is always disorganized and slightly over price. There is also a place called sound exchange but the guy there does not seem to care about his customers or the quality of his records. I would avoid him.

Kind of a useless rant there at the end. sorry :p

Wow, I didn't realize Cactus Music reopened. I must be really out of it.

The tricky part with Goodwill, or buying used vinyl online is that if it's scratched up and you receive it, what's your recourse? Especially if it's scratched to the point of skipping. I got a handful of old records from Goodwill one time assuming they would be in pretty good shape, and I think about 2-10 were playable. Others looked like they had been used as frisbies with the family dog. I used to work at a college radio station and got hundreds (maybe a thousand) records, so my collection for that era is fantastic, but now that I don't DJ, I've got a bunch of records that I want to keep for collection-sake, but damn....they take up a lot of space, and I don't even have my turntables setup at the moment.

www.auralexploits.com is good for new records as well. keep an eye for record conventions that pass through your city. we get them every 6 months or so and i've found some pretty awesome gems for very very cheap (sealed pink floyd the wall $8 for example)

Haha amen to that.

For most old records I mostly used flea markets and music selling antique shows when I was buying records. Garage sales also can be good although records are starting to get old enough that you don't see them as much anymore. I personally haven't gotten involved in the current revival, was more in to getting the classic a few years ago.
