[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here[/url].

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Let me know if I missed anything or if something breaks!

Interesting - I had a post-play survey that was expiring for it the same time. So guess that can be another clue as to when some games expire (when the post-play for these older games that you registered before the 3 month thing came in to play). According to my history, I registered DQ IX when it first came out in 2010.

But I am definitely off a year on all those other games I listed that I have not registered yet. All the To-Dos are in the next Club year, even though the codes expire this Club year (at least according to the papers).

Huh.  Mario Kart 8 and NSMBU were downloaded at the same time and previously showed as expiring July 3, but now MK8 registration is expiring August 31.

Heads up - a bunch of Club Nintendo codes are expiring this year (4 years from release - it is on the fine print of the code sheets and something I never noticed before). If you have Intend To Buy's on them, it will show you have 5 years on your To-Do's, but that is a lie. The codes will expire a year before that.

Next up is Dragon Quest IX DS on July 11th (9 days!).

I made a list just out of codes that I own and put it in the other thread:

Also, make sure to go here to trade if you have extras:

Oh snap so they won't register at all then? Guess it's time to open DQ9.

Yeah I had one that was expiring July 1st and I wasnt sure if I should do it on June 30th or wait...when I went to do it on the 30th I noticed it had changed to August 31st and it said it was only worth 60 coins instead of the bonus for 70 coins. I did all 4 surveys for them on July 1st and even though it said 60 (even shows I only earned 60 in my coins history list), it still gave me 70 coins each.

Yeah, we already have the example of Sin & Punishment Star Successor which expired earlier this year according to the date on the code sheet (and a CAG tried to redeem it and was told it had expired). And yet I it still remains in your To-Do list (if you did the ITB for it) as being good until next year. So don't go by that, go by the expiration of the codes unless we hear otherwise.

Well crap on a cracker, I have Sin and Punishment that I hadn't registered yet either. :whistle2:(

I missed it too.

And thus the need for the list of games expiring this club year ;).

This is a new thing with the 4 year expiration that started with games in 2010 just hitting their end date now. So we all need to be aware of this and figure out the details. So far we only have confirmation of that one game expiring according to the printed date. But it would probably make sense to assume the others will as well. There are a few 2010 games that do not have expirations printed on them, so they should be good: NSMB Wii (actually came out in Nov 2009 but it was close enough that I made sure to check - and I even redeemed one to be sure), and Super Mario Galaxy 2 (May 2010). But SMG2 came out after Sin & Punishment and does not have the expiration, so I guess they left it off for that one big release. Everything else from 2010 seems to have an expiration.

You had originally mentioned Wii Fit Plus (game-only) in this post, so I wanted to chime in and say that my to-do list says that one expires 10/04/14.

I removed it because it actually came out in 2009 when I checked it again. So that is a pre-expiration code.

I have the sheet from the full game + board version (that got me 100 coins) and it does not have an expiration date on it. But like you I had it in my To-Dos for this year (probably that same date) which is why I redeemed it. So, then, what does it mean when there is an expiration date on your To-Do list but not on the code itself? Is that a case where you can't redeem it on that account but can on others, or does it just mean you don't get the 10 coin ITB bonus? We won't know until someone tries it I guess. I also have the game-only version of Wii Fit Plus in my To-Dos. If I can find one of those codes, I might try this (wait till after the date in my To-Do list and see what happens when I redeem).

I have a few other games expiring this year on my To-Do that also probably pre-date the expiration dates being put on the code sheets: Fossil Fighters, Picross 3D, Style Savvy, 100 Classic Books, and a few others. So I might have some other opportunities to test it out (possibly with Picross since I know I have that code). But then this won't be a problem going forward since everything after that will have the 4 year expiration anyway.

Looks like Picross 3D actually came out on May 3, 2010, so it might actually be expired. I'll try to find it... Success! Hmmm... Picross 3D seems to be another game that came out in 2010 but does not have an expiration. That might have something to do with it coming out much earlier (2009) in Japan. So that's a good test of the To-Do list expiration - what will happen if I try to redeem that code after it expires on my list? It is only there because I did the Intend to Buy. If I hadn't done that it wouldn't be expiring from there as it wouldn't be there at all.

Does anyone else find it odd that there are two CN threads with the exact same discussion happening in both? Seems like overkill for both threads to exist.
No more than anything else that happens on CAG. I mean, why does the Mario Kart 8 free game news require a thread separate from this thread? Anyway, I think io started the discussion in both because different people look at both threads. So while we're having this discussion, different people are having that discussion, which ultimately ends (at least conceptually) with more information / details than io just telling us to post in one of the threads.

I did move it to the other one, but I think more people read this one and now I'm answering questions here as a result. Besides, I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on more game registrations (other than Sin & Punishment) because they weren't aware of the earlier than expected expirations.

To bring this back on topic, I'm sure I will be getting a lot more of the Club Nintendo Wii VC and DSiware game codes going forward as I'll probably be redeeming well over 1000 points this summer alone. All these expiring games are a game changer for how I'll look at Club Nintendo deal redemption. In fact, knowing that I'll be redeeming a lot more coins than usual is the deciding factor to me getting the Electroplankton game. I might as well...

What I had been doing up till now was saving codes to use for lean years. But it seems there haven't been many lean years (for me anyway) on Club Nintendo! There's always some new hardware (Wii U or new 3DS model) or promo (like the MK8 one) to get plenty of coins. Now I'll be adding more coins and looking to spend them more often.

I redeemed a Wii Fit with board code yesterday and got my 100 coin survey. I'm hoping they're not going to retroactively apply that to old codes, and they just want to set precedent for their Wii U and 3DS stuff

I also redeemed a Wii Fit Plus with board code a few months ago. I got a 10 coin survey as well. Didn't have the 10 coin bonus though.

Did I miss it or did I just not see the list of expiring games in the link you had earlier in the thread?

It applies to a lot of Wii and DS codes as well (2010 and beyond). But yeah, it does appear that they introduced it back then (just before the 3DS came out) and older games will still work (though they can always pull them from eligibility whenever they want).

It is in the OP of the other thread now.

I want the gba ambassador games for platinum members

Now THAT would be nice
Since you brought it up, I have a question. What systems came with the ambassador stuff and are they tied to the system itself or to the person's account? I've bought a number of Nintendo portables and wiis and I am curious where/what to look for to see if there are games on them.

Oh no you don't.  I was an early adopter.  You don't get the games we paid good money for.  Those games should never see the light of day for you bandwagoners.   ;)

When I transferred my ambassador from 3ds to my XL it was system linked.  I think it has stayed that way but people would know better than I. (it deleted off my original 3DS)

Since you brought it up, I have a question. What systems came with the ambassador stuff and are they tied to the system itself or to the person's account? I've bought a number of Nintendo portables and wiis and I am curious where/what to look for to see if there are games on them.
Those games weren't included with the 3DS right out of the box, rather the Ambassador program was for anyone who registered their system before 7/12/11. Nintendo's DRM policies has been in a slow state of flux over the past few years, it was primarily hardware based and has slowly been transitioning over linking your content to your Nintendo ID. That whole process is still very much in progress.

You can transfer Ambassador games with the system transfer feature. Last I had heard those in the Ambassador program could call Nintendo to have them transfer the Ambassador games over as well.

If you want to see if a system is an Ambassador system, you can find those games in the system's download history on the eShop I think.

So annoyed with myself. Forgot to put in enough codes for Platinum. With my luck, there will be something I actually want this year.
Last year I was platinum, but just wound up getting a game that I could have gotten for gold status. If that happens again this year, maybe we can work something out where you order my gold gift for me and I'll order the platinum for you. We can see what happens when the gifts are announced.

Yep, Ambassador program is for those who bought a 3DS for full price at launch.

*sigh* $250.
Or those that bought it once the program and price drop were announced and then price matched the system to the new price. Wish I had done that.

It would be pretty amazing to get those for platinum which means we won't.

I wish we would at least get some of the GBA titles from that Ambassador Program because there was no way I was going to drop $250 on a 3ds at launch.
That's why the ambassador program came to be, because of the price cut that happened shortly after launch. It was to appease the early adopters who got screwed.

I rather Nintendo kept the Ambassador games special like Doc Louis Punch Out. Then again, I would like Nintendo to offer fewer items I could just go to a store and buy, yet most people seem to want more of those. =\

Mario Party 2 Club Nintendo Wii VC/Wii U.

If I redeem the code and download it your Wii U, does it qualify for the Wii U deluxe eshop promo?

Fingers crossed for some decent non-kirby games next go'round. Come'on Ninty! We no want three-peats!

That's what I did and proud of it. My aqua blue 3DS is still kicking, had to replace the R button and now have to replace the L button, but together they cost me about $10 and replacing them was a lot easier than I thought.

Yep. I got mine on launch. The first console I've ever purchased on launch too. I usually wait for a price drop, but I loved my ds lite, so I felt the need to jump on this early. I remember walking into Kmart (they must have had some deal going on for it, I never shop there) and asked for the console, and the sales guy had no clue what I was talking about.

I actually bought mine once Wal-mart dropped the price early and signed up that night. I couldn't stay away from having 10 NES "classics" when I knew I was going to buy the 3DS eventually for the first-party content. Yes, I'm a sucker, I know...

Or be a Craigslist hawk and snatch one. I got an Ambassador 3DS with Zelda, Star Fox, and Street Fighter 4 for $180 almost two years ago. Transferred the Ambassador stuff to my new XL and sold the other 3DS to a friend. Nowadays the Ambassador systems apparently go for a lot on Ebay but a few months after the price drop they were easy to find.

Yeah, no... It would not be good for Nintendo to screw over their most loyal customers by giving them something they already have. Think about it.

Well they could offer that and something else for people who already have it.

Thats all pie in the sky though cos it ain't happening.

I, too, only like Nintendo giving us games for Platinum (or Ambassador) that you can't get any other way. It makes no sense for me to spend my precious coins for games I can buy, and Platinum should be no different... It needs to be special, exclusive, forever.

Well, sure. I mean, it would be awesome if for Ambassador people maybe they offered a download code for the new Smash Brothers. And then non-Ambassador people could get the older games. I'd be cool with that.

But like you say, pie in the sky ;).

What we'll probably end up with is another soundtrack or something like a pocket-sized art book...

Seriously, though, the best thing I can think of that is likely and ties in with their current marketing would be a Club Nintendo-exclusive Amiibo figure. Like special edition Skylanders, it wouldn't necessarily do anything different than a regular one, but it would look different. For example, instead of the fireball Mario we get a gold one or something. I could totally see that. It is both an exclusive figure (since everyone seems to be pining for the good old days when we got the Mario statue from CN) and promotion for their upcoming products.

I'm not saying this would be the greatest award, but it is a realistic one.

If Playstation Plus or Games with Gold can't/won't offer you something different if you already own what they're promoting, why should Nintendo?

I would like the GBA games as CN rewards, and I've said that before. Wouldn't take any extra work, and it would feed interest into the program. Which basically means it won't happen. You'll take yet another Kirby game and like it.

If you're going to start describing the nonexistent figure, at least make it logical. Like the figure is platinum (cause we can all agree that if we get said nonexistent figure, it would be platinum only) and it would maybe unlock metal (platinum?) mario as Nintendo seems fairly fond of him and it would be a simple, but extremely awesome choice.

Anyway, I really hope Nintendo announces it before we hit 100 "I would like A, but I expect it to be only slightly better than a stick in the eye" posts.

Terrible comparison.

Nintendo offers you 1 item for earning 300+ coins in a calendar year, which is a feat many people (even on CAG) don't accomplish. On the other hand, Sony / M$ offer 24 - 72 games a year for up to $60 a month, in addition to features like online multiplayer, cloud saving and the like. Needless to say, Sony / M$ has a margin of error, where as Nintendo has 1 shot per year.

That's a little different though. If Sony or MS give out a game or two out of the several they give away each month that someone already has that's not nearly as big a deal.

But making the once-a-year Platinum reward something that early adopters of the 3DS already got as a consolation prize for the rapid, steep price drop would be a slap in the face to those early adopters. Nintendo can't possibly be that stupid. I'd only be cool with that if they offered an even better alternative for Ambassador people (or for everyone and you got to choose which one to take).

It's not like something that just happened though with the Ambassador's, it ended almost three years ago. Pretty sure that's beyond the limits of it not diminishing your specialness by someone else being able to get the same thing you have. If they start selling them as normal Virtual Console games would everyone feel that Nintendo was devaluing their faceless consumer presence more or less than if they gave them as a CN Platinum reward?

I rather Nintendo kept the Ambassador games special like Doc Louis Punch Out. Then again, I would like Nintendo to offer fewer items I could just go to a store and buy, yet most people seem to want more of those. =\
Yeah, you would like to have that stuff all to yourself forever you hoardo.

Actually, no, I have no problem with them just selling them on the VC. I'm surprised they haven't already. The "exclusiveness" of the Ambassador program was simply that we got them early and free. It seems like a waste for them not to sell them regularly though.

But giving them away as the Platinum prize would be incredibly stupid. It's not because then other people are getting them and we aren't "special" any more. It's that then they are essentially excluding Ambassador people (ie, those who supported your newest handheld when it was being ridiculed in the gaming media and sites like this one) from getting a Club Nintendo prize. How is that fair?

Look, this is all a stupid argument, because there are so many other things they could have. I'm not even sure why this came up. I guess I'm just shocked that people think this is even a possibility.

The games should be available for purchase by everyone - but sure as hell not as the Club Nintendo reward.

Ad here I bow out - as others have said, it is pretty pointless to speculate at this time. I look forward to coming in here and joining in the complaints about the lameness of whatever it is we do get though ;).

I have no issues with Nintendo outright selling the games and really hope they do for those who really want them. However, I would have a serious problem with Nintendo offering them as a reward, for a similar reason I had issues with them offering the $0.30 games as the first Club Nintendo Wii U titles. As it stands, Club Nintendo is a program that is suppose to reward the most loyal with promotional items in exchange for spending money on their products and taking the time to fill out their surveys. However, when Nintendo pulls something like that, they ultimately lower the value for the most faithful* (the ones who arguably have the most coins, platinum status, multiple remaining vouchers and buy their products) and puts these people in a very undesirable spot.

You figure, because I was a day 1 Wii U buyer and bought all the $.30 games, I only had the choice of 1 Wii U game so far. I was also an early 3DS supporter and because of that I have ambassador status and if these games were offered as a platinum reward, it would be 1 or more less things I could choose from. Finally, similar to what happens with PlayStation Plus, people love to give their 2 cents about how great the program is and how wrong it is to complain about anything. So basically, I got the shaft for supporting the Wii U, you want to give me the shaft for supporting the 3DS and several people want me to only express appreciation throughout the process. Gee, sure sounds awesome to be a loyal customer.

* Please note, I am well aware that Nintendo doesn't need to market to me. Like I already posted, the faithful are assumed to buy regardless and offering a better or worse reward probably isn't going to affect this demographic in any real way. With that being said, it still doesn't mean I can't express frustration at the situation or towards those that want to make the program worse for me. I much rather a couple completely unique prizes are offered, which is fair for everyone, as we will all have the same choice as anyone else on our level.

The problem is all of the people who hoard CN points and prizes simply to resell the items on ebay.

If you want to blame someone they are part of why the coin prices for items have increased.

In a perfect world only "the most loyal" like you stated would register the coins and the promotion wouldn't be abused.

But lets not kid ourselves, a good example is the most recent club nintendo mario kart + free game promo which has heavily been abused. Do you blame them for putting up crappy stuff when a lot of orders aren't even coming from "loyal fans" and instead from the ebay resellers?

Yeah you can fault them to an extent and our prizes here in the US are complete shit compared to other regions. But I think part of it has to do with the program being abused. I have no problem calling them out for the shitty rewards but I'm still glad we end up with something despite people still abusing the system.

I think limiting high profile rewards to one per account would help, although all a reseller would have to do is make another CN account.

Something they did do to combat the resellers was offering that Luigi statue at a rediculously high markup, again something that sucks for the loyal fans but had to be done because of the abusers.

So it's just a matter that others must pay for them even if they paid the same amount for their system when they had it and support Nintendo enough to reach their top tier of their rewards program?

It is a dumb argument though since it will never happen and Nintendo clearly has no intention of ever making those games available on 3DS again. I just think it's silly to say that three years after the fact that if Nintendo gave them out it would be an offense to everyone who got them and probably hasn't touched them in two years. Then again I'm just bitter that Nintendo's never going to let me have Minnish Cap or a Metroid Fusion on my 3DS.

I think its more of a point of, I was an early supporter and I am still a big Nintendo supporter...I dont want the same games I already got as an exclusive reward. I spent my money to earn platinum yet again and I dont want a reward that I have already been given. I think at this point its pretty obvious they have decided to release GBA games on the Wii U instead of the 3DS....why, I have no idea. Several (nearly all) of the GBA ambassador games are already on the Wii U VC now, including Minish Cap and Metroid Fusion.

Edit: Yep, all but 3 of the GBA games are on the Wii U VC...Mario Kart, Mario vs DK, and Fire Emblem are the only ones not released. With the release pattern theyve had for them, I would expect these to be some of the next GBA games added to Wii U. I think the VC selection on both systems is kinda ridiculous considering how spread out they are. I had high hopes for several games but they seem to not care about releasing very many.

I don't see why Nintendo doesn't just price those games higher. The 3DS was "overpriced" by $80 and they offered what, 10 free games? Make the games $8 each to anyone who wants to buy them... maybe $10 so those loyal early adopters got a "deal". Maybe Nintendo allows a one time trade-in of an Ambassador game for another to appease that crowd... but now we're getting too complicated.
