[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here[/url].

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Let me know if I missed anything or if something breaks!

I thought flash drives won't work with the wii u.......or at least for installing games. If they work then I'll for sure buy this sandisk
Im running Game and Wario and NSMBU from it. Its working at the moment, but Nintendo doesnt recommend them as flash memory as a limited number of read/writes

Yeah but as cheap as flash drives are and continually getting cheaper and larger if you manage to kill one in 5-10 years it's not like a $150 SSD.

What are you platinum members redeeming for your reward? If you're getting it for Wii U, it kind of has to be Earthbound, doesn't it? I don't have a 3DS.

No and this sort of leads into one of the biggest problems with the rewards. While you might like Earthbound the best, depending on how you redeem digital games it might pay off more to get Game and Wario purely for the DDP points. Like if you get a game via MK 8, then thats up to 599 points or $5 and 99 points. Game and Wario would bump you up to 398 and you could easily get the remaining 102 points for about 400 CN coins (price of about 2 digital games) and that would put you at 1,000 points or $10 or free Earthbound. This is just one example and another way to look at it, though my advice is to go with whatever you like most, unless you can get another game for free with enough DDP.

But what's the value in a game that sucks? The thing is I'll never be platinum again. I just had a crap load of Wii games I never redeemed but did once I got the Wii U.

I think those with 3DS' got DKCR and wii u owners are doing G&W.

Because why get a $5 game when you can get one that goes for $30

Thats more of a personal question than one I or anyone else here can answer. My post was simply explaining that it might be more advantageous* to get the most expensive game, simply because it's the most expensive game.

* stats of the two.

Game and Wario: Retail title, MSRP: $29.99, gives 299 (more than halfway to $5) DDP and 40 Club Nintendo coins.

Earthbound: Digital title, MSRP: $9.99, gives 99 DDP and like 10 - 20 Club Nintendo coins.

I think most WiiU owners are leaning towards G&W because of the value discrepancy.

Or, you know, you bought Earthbound when it was first released on the VC because of all the hype it had on CAG (though you have yet to play it).

For me it is between Game & Wario, which I own on disc but never opened (my sealed copy is already up on eBay), DKCR which I probably wouldn't play but maybe my son would, or NES Remix. If you could buy a 3DS digital game and have it work across multiple devices like with iOS I'd probably get DKCR. But since I'd either have to lock it to my 3DS or my son's I'm kind of ruling that out. NES Remix is only a $15 game and I think has been on sale (or if not, probably will be) for $10. So that pretty much means Game & Wario by default. Since I ought to be able to get $20 after fees for my sealed copy, that pretty much means Nintendo is giving me $20 for a platinum reward. Meh - OK, I guess...

Six of one. The Samsung card is a tad better (not that you'll see much if any difference performance wise), both have free shipping (if you're Prime), but the Sandisk will get to you quicker potentially (if you're Prime).

Seems like I'm in the minority when I say I finally bit the bullet and chose NES Remix. It looked the most interesting to me and it's normally $15, which is better than the one other game I would want to have (Wario Land II). Game & Wario would've given me the most coins, but I wanted something that was going to provide me with some lasting entertainment.

You're not alone in that department haha. I've always meant to try NES Remix, but $15 was a tad too much for my liking. Free is more like it!

quick question. I redeemed Paper Mario from Club Nintendo but it gives me an error saying the distribution period has not started yet. Anybody running into the same problem?

Gah I forgot about the CN coins, my brain argument may pull ahead since I may be lean this CN year for coins.

Then again maybe I should force myself to not remember that and just get the better game overall.

Happy with this year's rewards. All my rewards for previous platinums are just sitting around boxed. Got me Donkey Kong Country Returns. Been wanting that one.

Oh come on, even if you got a gold prize it's at most a 30 coin loss. Thats so minor in the grand scheme and its not like you'll miss out on anything special.

The thing is I'm pretty much split down the middle between the two, so even the extra 40 coins (40 + 10 PPS I'm assuming, didn't see an initial registration for EB) can be a tipping point, especially if that means staving off opening up one more sealed game incase another monthly game tickles my fancy. I don't spend enough to be rolling in the coins anymore.

Plus I think my kids would get more into G&W at this age than Earthbound (which I tend to do more family gaming right now), though I've heard mixed results on here.

If nothing else in looking at G&W as basically a $3 discount on Earthbound.

Yeah I factored that in already, but I like spending no money if possible for a game I know I'll play (just may take awhile to get around to it). At that point CN may even offer EB as a standard reward (maybe).
I also think EB will now be offered as a normal game. Hard to say if Nintendo will venture past the $10 range, but EB certainly meets every requirement we've seen so far.

Yeah I mentioned that right after the list went up when I realized that all of the games from last year were monthlies. Then a handful of these games were monthlies already. If we were to get a sale on it like EU does this week I would gladly buy it still, I just can't see paying full price when I've held out this long.

Does anyone know if the codes expire? I don't have a wii u but want Nes remix. Can i get the get the download code and save it til i finally get a wii u or will it expire?

Maybe someone else that knows more can chime in but I thought I read (here) in the past that the Club Nintendo NES Remix contains less content than the one you buy from the eshop?

Lol what...I dont think this is true at all, its the same game. Maybe I am wrong though but I dont see this being the case.

You know what would have fixed most of the griping... Nintendo should have released some NEW games to Gold/Plat. members first instead of recycling old ones. You know, new VC releases that you could only get for 6 months if you are Gold/Plat. I'm sure people would have complained that they're not forever exclusive, but NONE of these are anyway. At least be up front, say that they'll be offered for sale or for coins later, but as Gold/Plat. you have a chance to get them first.

That would be a nice thing. Wouldn't do much for me as I don't care about replaying old games. But would have pleased some of the bitching.

If they're going to have this type of reward system and want to minimize bitching they should:

-Offer some new VC games like you suggest, along with some old, popular ones
-Offer 2-3 full retail, current gen games
-Offer some physical rewards for the collector types

If they don't want to do that, scrap the whole program and just broaden the digital deluxe promo into a broader earned reward system as I others have suggested repeatedly. Give points for the codes in retail games just like you earn them for digital purchases now. There would be less bitching and it would get more of the retail only types trying some digital games since they're earning some for free just buy buying games. Maybe some of them start liking the convenience of digital games and buying more digitally. Which is a big win for Nintendo as that's more profit from not having to make and ship the physical game, and not losing sales down the road if that physical copy is resold, traded in and lent out.

I see that a lot of people are complaining about these free games but I think this is great step in the right direction. I do like the idea of getting free games but I also wish the selection was a little better. I'm probably going to get NES Remix or Dr. Luigi for Wii U.

I pose this question. Since they offer games for Gold and Platinum status wouldn't it be nice if you reached platinum status that you could choose one game from the Platinum selection and one from the Gold selection. Maybe this would make people happy? Can't please everyone.

Maybe someone else that knows more can chime in but I thought I read (here) in the past that the Club Nintendo NES Remix contains less content than the one you buy from the eshop?
you are probably thinking of NES Remix 2, which most reviews/people said was better in every way, with Remix 1 being more of a fun proof of concept. From what I've played of Remix 1, it's fun and makes mr want to buy Remix 2, but I'm glad I didn't pay $15 for the first one. Not bad for free though and it IS unique.

How would it make people happy?

The selection is so limited and again, I'm sure there are plenty of people that used the games being offered to achieve Platinum status in the first place

4 games for the 3DS being offered, what if you're like me and only have a 3DS and have all the games already?

That's a major slap in the face.

Yes, the rewards program is just bonus, and yes "free is free" (I normally defend something like this)

But when the reward system is setup how CN is, this is just sad

Yea the value between the games isn't very fair. A better ideas would have been to chose chose two smaller eshop titles that add to $30 or less or one of the retail ones.

In any case, I'm happy with it, been wanting earthbound and dr. Luigi, not sure which to go with yet. DK is the better value but would much rather have physical for that.

sure it was free you paid for your games not the code (unless you bought them on ebay if you did sorry about your luck), it's an EXTRA they don't have to do.. Sony and M$ don't do that. Be grateful you got something
Just because it isn't the reason why you bought it doesn't make it free. It isn't free if you have to buy something for it.

Anybody else hopping CN is down because they forgot to add the "real" awards?  Or possibly the landslide of complaints is helping them re-think them?

Club Nintendo has been undergoing maintenance for a day now. Do you guys think they are updating elite status rewards or coin rewards and just typical maintenance?

I love how people have to damage control for a large corporation. No, these rewards are not free. Not only do I have to buy the games (One of the reasons I bought new was for the coins), but I also have to fill out surveys. Nintendo is paying me for time and information by offering these rewards. As for MS and Sony, why should I even care what they do? How does their lack of rewards program make this one any better?

Try it in a different browser or clear your cache. On my main computer it won't work in Chrome but works fine everywhere else.

I don't think that would fix anything. Most of the people complaining are either complaining because they want physical items or the difference in cost. Simply going "hey, heres a free copy of WarioWare Twisted 6 months before release!" isn't going to do anything. Especially since they probably aren't going to offer a new / unique eShop game like SNES Remix or something under the same conditions.

It would be nice, but it wouldn't make a difference in my book. In its current form, the elite prizes have a couple of core problems that make it fundamentally flawed.

  • Difference in cost. One thing thats great about the gold offerings is that everything is everything is between $3.99 (this only being Mario Land 2) and $4.99. Then you have the platinum rewards, which are just a mess... Dillon / Mario & DK / Earthbound are $9.99, Fluidity is $10.99, NES Remix and Dr. Luigi are $14.99 and DK / Game & Wario are $29.99. Some people have an issue with Nintendo offering a games worth 2 - 3 times as much as other offerings, but putting them at the same cost.
  • Some are past paid rewards and I am willing to bet most will be future paid rewards. Not only does this put increased risk on buying literally anything from Club Nintendo (ultimately wasting coins), it also decreases said games value. When I can look at something like Dillon and say no at 200 coins, it's not like I'm going to be that excited to get it for free.
  • It's possible to own every game! One thing that sucks about PlayStation Plus and Games with Gold is getting a game you bought for free. You might not complain about it, but its simply something you don't typically want to see. The one saving grace for PlayStation Plus and GwG is that it's a continuous system where you can get up to 72 games a year and are bound to eventually find the value in the service. The same can't be said for the elite rewards. Many of the gold tier rewards are classics you've no doubt played and don't want to own for the gajillionth time, could upgrade to the Wii U version for a buck and some change or are just otherwise unappealing. The platinum rewards aren't much better, since the mass appeal games have a much higher chance of being purchased in the past (I already own a digital copy of DKCR3D) and the other ones are games I can flat out tell you I had no intent to purchase beyond "I had DDP cash." At least in the days of physical prizes they were unique and special to the program.
  • Digital DX Program and coins. One thing that really sucks is the increased value of Wario versus other titles. Since Wario is a $29.99 game, it also gives 299 DDP and would leave you up to 201 points short of a $5 voucher (enough to get any of the gold offerings and then some) versus the < 150 points everything else offers. This also makes Wario / DK worth more coins (around 2 - 3x depending on if you filled out intend to buy. See people! This is why you fill out all of them and the digital ones... impossible to predict), so their overall value spreads beyond what you would play. Naturally this also makes the cheaper items harder to justify.
  • etc
These are just some of the problems with the current offerings and ideally something that won't happen again.

I also think there's no eShop credit because that WOULD actually cost Nintendo money. If you pick an Indie developer game and not one from Nintendo, they'd probably have to pay the cut to the developer.
