I have a 160GB 10k RPM Raptor Hard Drive and a 640GB 7200 RPM Hard drive. Both are newish but i had the 640gb first.

Up until now i have just had everything installed on my 640gb. Both drives are new but i am new to having 2 hard drives i always just had one. I am big into gaming and movie making so I am trying to figure out the best setup or way to use them.

Right now i just setup the 160gb raptor as a secondary drive but wouldn't it be wise to have the operating system on the raptor and just save my movies/music and stuff to the 640gb?

I am not sure how to do this, i already have my os setup on the 640gb drive and wouldnt know how to swap it over to the 160gb drive. i appreciate advice you guys can give to help me have a faster and more smooth setup.

My 2 hard drives are

WD6401AALS 640gb 7200rpm
and
WD1600HLFS 160gb 10k rpm

**after looking into it, somebody recommended ghosting the operating system onto the new hard drive. Not sure how to do that or if anybody has experience with this. Still any advice anybody has would be great.

Use the Raptor as your primary. It's faster speed will be wasted if you use it as a rarely accessed backup drive.

Don't ghost anything. Put everything important on the 640GB, then reinstall your OS on the Raptor. Temporarily bring back your important data to the Raptor, reformat the 640GB, then put your backed up stuff (ie; photos, music) back on the 640GB. If what you want is "faster and more smooth", a complete reinstall will get you there quicker than messing with ghosting apps.

If you have important data, I'd even get an external enclosure for the 640GB, back your shit up to that, then store that drive offsite (ie: your parents house). A fire or a computer disaster could occur and things like digital photos can't be replaced. My brother lost all his wedding pictures because his computer fucked up and he didn't have a backup solution, I even suggested he get an external HDD but he didn't care to.

thanks for the advice crunch, that makes absolute sense, i just didnt want to have to install all my programs again that i had installed back to the main drive. I guess it would be worth it in the long run though right?

A reinstall will get rid of a lot of bit rot, basically remnants of programs, registry bloat, and temp files that really start to add up and effect performance.

What I usually do is take my backup drive and save the installers for programs on there. So when I reformat and put the OS back on, it's easy to just grab stuff from that folder and reinstall without having to go to tons of websites. When I do that I also tend to realize half the programs I have I don't really need anymore. You really get an idea for what's important and what's obsolete. In the end your system is like brand new and more streamlined.

i already reinstalled the os on the raptor and im in the process of reinstalling needed programs and transferring info. it is really fast. Thanks for the help and the idea.
I have one of the original raptors as my OS drive, i don't really see that much of a performance increase.
Most people won't. The newer 7200 RPM drives are nearly as fast now. The difference is minimal via most benchmarks.
