As long as you have some room in the back for the fans to vent and a little breathing room, you should be fine. It looks like there is a hole in the back of the stand, so you should be fine. You can cover your PS3 if you want, but I wouldn't do it right after playing. I just use a Swiffer duster a few times a week.
As for not playing the PS3 for hours and hours, it will benefit you more than the PS3.
