Digital downloads vs. Physical copies

Following up on the Batman: Arkham City complaints about the retailer-specific DLC content, it made me think: "Why was there no incentive to digitally download the game?"

Do you think a retailer lock-out work to get more people to download a game? For example, a AAA title could be limited to digital downloads for 2 weeks before being released to stores to sell, or would more people wait the 2 weeks t buy it from a store?

If anything, you would have to do it the other way around... let the stores have it exclusively for 2 weeks and then DD only. Most sales are made in the first 2 weeks, and there's no way a store would want to hold any significant amount of physical inventory taking up shelf space for an indefinite period of time when they would miss out on the biggest rush of sales.

Well, if you can address and solve most of the issues:

1) what is the price point for digital downloaded AAA titles on day 1? will it be profitable to publishers?
2) how long does it take most people to download 5 GB - 7.5 GB of data?
3) what's the demographics of console owners with HDD memory capacity that's able to participate?
4) what's the incentive for people to purchase digital, without resale value; over physical media with resale vale?
5) online purchases often require credit cards, which excludes minors. how do you deal with this customer base that's now 'off-limit?'

just some obvious questions I would think of.
