or can your regular telephone number receive and send faxes? as long as you have a fax machine and a telephone number it should work right?

Yup.

Also, keep in mind, if you have DSL for internet, they probably gave you these line filters to connect to your phone jack. There's two outlets there. Connect your fax machine to the one marked as "phone" or else it won't work.
