Some questions about downloading the $29.99 Windows 7 Home Premium edition on my MacBook laptop.

1. Can I d.l it to my laptop and install on the same macbook? Or do I have to d.l to a pc first?

2. Can I burn the download to a disc (for backup purposes)? Or do I have to order the disc for the extra shipping when purchasing?

3. If I buy a new macbook down the road, can I transfer this version of Windows 7 to the new macbook? Will it have full functionality? Or is it a one computer license?

Thanks for any help with my questions.

This is my experience...

When you order the software, you get a confirmation email with a unique link to the downloads page.

There, you have the option of downloading the .iso downloader or the .exe downloader.

Note that I said "downloader." The thing you download first is a downloader program that I presume only runs in Windows environments. Once you have that program on your machine, then it downloads the .iso file (for burning to a DVD) or the .exe file (for upgrading from a currently installed Windows environment). I only downloaded the .iso so far, but I don't think that there is anything preventing you from downloading the .exe version as well. You don't have access to download any version of Win7 except the one that you ordered.

I would presume that you can burn the .iso file to a DVD from any machine that has .iso burning capability, be it PC, Mac or Linux. I would also presume that the burned DVD is identical to the DVD that they would send to you. Maybe some who knows can really confirm this.

I think that covers 1 & 2. As for 3, I don't know how stingy MS is going to be with the licenses. I think that if you buy a retail copy of Win7 upgrade, you are allowed to move it to another machine if you are discarding the original installation. I think if you buy an OEM version of Win7 from someplace like Newegg, the license restricts the installation to the original hardware on which it is installed, but, again, I don't know how anal MS is going to be about enforcing those restrictions.

Speaking of.... what happened to that deal thread? I thought the offer was good through Jan 31.

Seems like you should be able to burn the .iso to a DVD. That's what I did with the Release Candidate version I'm still running.

If you have a .edu email address, Microsoft will give you Windows 2008 R2 for free via their dreamspark.com program.
Just call MS and they'll send you the Full version of Windows 7 Professional (both 32/64 bit) for $30 with free shipping + tax.

See this thread from slickdeals: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1562761

Read the wiki there for any and all info...
Thanks I knew it was digital river but thought there was a direct from MS too. Used to be several page thread in this forum about it but I couldn't find it.

Wife works for a university so should be no problem. Checked the IT store there just the other day and they were selling for $40, so if I can still get the free shipping DVD from MS for $30 I might as well.
What is the phone number to order it from?
Check the thread from slickdeals that I linked to, then read the wiki. ALL the info is there. It may have only been valid until Jan 1st. Or perhaps jan 31...i dunno
