Key features
 • 120 licensed cars, each with full interior views rendered

 • Over 200 square miles of driveable road (reported to be the largest free-roam driving area in a game thus far), including most iconic locations from San Francisco

 • "Shift" mechanic allows player to freely jump to various cars on the road, best explained in the videos below
 • Side missions resulting from "Shift" mechanic range from recreating classic movie chases like in Terminator, Bullitt, and The French Connection, to helping an angry teenager piss off his driver's ed instructor
 • On-foot GTA/Driv3r style gameplay with guns is removed, as this game brings the series back to its original Driver roots on the PSX
 • Many online multiplayer modes
 • Split screen multiplayer
 • Audio mixed at Pinewood Studios, known for sound direction of James Bond films
 • 60 licensed songs plus the original Driver theme

Anyone else really pumped for this? I used to play the crap out of the original Driver on PSX and it seems San Francisco is going back to its roots. The car list looks incredible, especially with the various Group B rally cars and iconic '60s and '70s cars pulled from cinema's best chase scenes.

I played a ton of Driver on PSX... I also had a lot of fun with Driver 3 on Xbox. The game wasn't great by any means, but I used to have a blast driving the forklift around flipping other cars on their backs... lol.

This game looks fun. We'll see how it turns out :D
The videos made me go and preorder this today. Looks like a really fun racing game.
Awesome. I haven't pre-ordered yet as I'm wondering if any bonus DLC will pop up from any certain retailers, but will def have it day one.

I can't believe how little hype there is over this game, but I think these new videos may help. It'll be fun to get a big CAG chase going.

I wonder if they will include the opening car chase scene from the first Transporter flick in that awesome 7 series BMW... That is one of my favorites.

Sadly it doesn't look like BMW's a part of this game. I really expected them to be in since the game's creator references Ronin's chases a lot. Oh well! No Ferraris either, though it's not surprising as they're so stingy with licensing.

This interview with the game's lead dev talks a ton about licensing cars for Driver: SF in particular: http://drivinggamespro.com/featured/the-movie-car-stars-of-driver-san-francisco/

I'll add that Transporter chase to the OP anyway :)
If they didn't put that gimmicky Shit ability in the game, then the game could have been decent.
The devs have said it can easily be switched off in multiplayer, and outright not used throughout the entire single player game. I know you may not like the idea of Shift, but please don't thread-crap because of it...

I'm not sure how much I'll use it as it does seem to weaken the idea of a classic car chase, but it does also innovate the genre and the Driver series, and provide an extra way to just have fun in the free-roaming environment.

Crazy. You've already played the game and know its going to be shit? That's a shame. I was really looking forward to this game. I loved Driver 1 and 2; Driv3r even had its moments when you were in car.

Can your really blame people? After Driver 2, the series has been going downhill. With the incarnation of GTA 3 and beyond people have forgotten about Driver 1.

I've been looking for a Aug/Sept release that will hold me over till Forza 4 and BF3, and this might just be it. I used to love the Driver game on PSX and was not a huge fan of Driv3r.

Just wanted to give y'all a heads up, looks like there's going to be a one-week delay. Couple of sites (GameStop, GameFAQS) are showing that the release date is now September 6th.

I noticed Amazon bumped it a week but didn't update the OP until Ubisoft gave an official statement, which came today on Facebook:

Hi Driver fans. We’ve been fine-tuning the last details for the release of Driver San Francisco and we’ve had to tweak the release schedule: in North America, Driver San Francisco will now be available on Sept. the 6th on all platforms.

We know a few more days might seem long when you’re really eager to cruise the streets of San Francisco, so stay tuned because we also have cool news regarding the demo incoming!

A week's not bad, even though this game's been delayed plenty longer than that. I'd much rather wait a week than lose some cars to hurried licensing issues or whatever's holding them back.

My son has been waiting years for this game. He still plays Driv3r on Xbox.

I REALLY hope it is truly like the original and not like any of its 'sequels'.

Thanks for the heads up on the TRU price drop. :D

New multiplayer promo video! Looks like there's still a ton of interesting modes to choose. This video highlights a lot of what you can do with Shift, and it looks like a really creative tool, but naysayers should note what the narrator says at 1:55. The Driver Club web integration actually looks pretty nice, and confirms that we'll be able to share our Director clips straight to the web.

Oh and if anyone hasn't checked out all those classic car chase scenes I dumped at the bottom of the OP, do it!! :)

Sweet news! Where did you see the official statement?

Also, I found four consecutive gameplay videos totaling an hour of fresh footage in a "let's play" style. Sadly the two players are speaking German, but these videos show a lot of good stuff.

Beware, early game spoilers below!
Apparently the demo drops this Wednesday
That would be awesome. Here's the latest official post about the demo:

"On the topic of the demo, we'll provide a firm date and more details as soon as possible. Exciting times ahead!" via Twitter

There is a multiplayer demo releasing next week as well.

Yea downloading now. Come on Driver. Please don't blow...

Thoughts: The game is fun. This game was definitely made for the muscle cars. I had the most fun just driving around the Charger for 3 minutes. The outside car view is classic Driver feel, but the in car view is where this game really shines. The modern cars aren't quite as fun, but they aren't bad. I want to get my hands on more muscle cars though. Peeling around corners is going to be a blast in the full game when running from the cops.

The music was barely noticeable. Hopefully in the full game we can turn off the licensed tracks and just play that classic driver music. Shift was very easy to use and it is a pretty cool feature. The cops aren't quite as aggressive as I had hoped but hopefully you can either up it in the full game or change it in free roam.

The graphics are very well done. There is no choppiness from what I've seen and no popping issues. The cut scenes are top notch as they always have been in the Driver series. The demo is short but you get a good idea of the game. They definitely got the old Driver feel back which is important.

After playing the demo, I am much more excited for the final product.

One of the interesting concepts I played in the demo was the team race mission. A nice little unique twist on racing where you switch between two racers in the attempt to get them to finish 1st and 2nd. I have to admit, I can see this being a good challenge in the story mode.

Chases seem fun, too. I enjoyed shifting into a large truck to cut off the cops (when I could) and make my escape. Shifting is a breeze, too.

Did I also see that there's going to be 19 different multiplayer modes in the game, too? That's just insane.

EDIT: Also, keep on the lookout next week for the multiplayer demo!

The demo is awesome in my opinion, really nailed what I was hoping for.

The cars look great and the interior view is excellent. Tanner's hands on the wheel move fluidly, and even react when you honk the horn. San Fran looks nice so far. Jumping the hills feels good and drifting Lombard Street is killer.

Nicer cars are rare in the demo, but I've tried out a Viper, Gallardo and another Lambo, DeLorean, Gran Torino, LeMans, Caddy Eldorado, the awesome Firebird Trans Am, a school bus, and various Dodge and Chevy muscle cars. They're all fun to drive and the handling is really well suited for the game's style. I'm really happy you can adjust the engine volume separately in the audio options. You can really crank it up and hear the detail of each car's sound.

Playing the demo also really convinced me on Shift. It's like they took the fun of free driving in GTA and cut out the clunky on-foot carjacking motions and wandering time required every time you wreck or want a nicer ride. The dialog you encounter with passengers is funny, not too obnoxious, and fun to play around with.

Also, the easiest way I've found to free roam is to start the "Prove It" mission, run the timer down then complete the first objective, run the next 5 minute timer down, then pause and click the "Prove It" option again.

Played the demo for a little bit last night, it was bloody fun, reminded me alot of the original Driver back on the PSX, and yes, I actually liked the Shift ability ;)

My brother found a nice jump off of a building during the escape from the cops mission. Reminded me of the first driver.

The online free roam is going to be amazing.
I think the demo turned me off to the game. Wasn't as fun as I was hoping for it to be.
You might want to try the multiplayer demo next week. I played tag mode at E3 and that was a ton of fun.

I have to mirror what many are saying in the other thread. The handling is a little off putting. Maybe I need more time with it, but it feels a little too much like driving on ice for me. I may wait for a drop to pick this up.

At first I felt the same way. I think the sense of speed is a little off in the game, as once I started paying more attention to my speedo I stopped flying out of drifts and hitting walls, and can now dodge cars really well and it feels great. 100 MPH really looks like 60 to me in this game sometimes. I've been playing a lot of DiRT lately too, which may have prepped me for SF's handling.

Someone in the other thread was griping, wishing for NFS:HP style handling, which just isn't the same type of game as Driver. Another guy said SF handles like Cruis'n USA. While that game kicks ass in its own right, I found the comparison ridiculous.

Maybe watching some of those classic car chase scenes I have in the OP will familiarize folks with the handling model Reflections is going for here. SF really nails the feeling I want when I'm driving home after seeing a movie with a really good chase scene in it.

I don't really get what every is complaining about with the handling. Make use of the hand brake and learn to drive with the charger.

I feel like this is a game where the developers knew exactly what they were going for and nailed it.

I like it. The demo sold it for me. The odd thing is even though the demo has modern cars, the SF location feels like it was in the '60s. I got the chance to drive down Lombard, and it's not quite accurate in terms of elevation. I like the muscle car selection, and I hope the DeLorean ends up in the retail version.

I'll buy it around $25.

Racing two cars at once is definitely new. The dialogue and humor is well written and delivered.
I'm loving this multiplayer Demo. Especially the Ubisoft Servers are currently down, please try again later. message.
Yeah, that part's especially great after the marketplace link for the demo being dead all day. Hopefully it'll be up and running tomorrow as I've heard good things from the PS3 crowd.

I just played through the single player demo, I am impressed. I remember seeing that shift thing in E3 videos thinking it was just some dumb gimmick but its actually fun to shift into a big rig to block off cops and such. For sure going to at least rent this now.
You guys enjoyed the demo? I thought it was horrible!
There are a few things that bother me about the game thus far:
 • Lack of parked cars on the roads makes for a strange city where no one is actually traveling to a destination
 • AI traffic is only accustomed to the player driving like crazy. Try cruising around the city like a normal driver--they still dodge you, blare the horn at you, etc. The roadways also seem to be oriented to avoid AI traffic ever stopping. You'll notice there are no red lights in the game, and no cross-traffic left turn intersections!
 • Rear and side view mirrors don't function properly in the interior view
 • The city looks nice, but is not completely drivable. Major roads and alleys are open and marked on the map, but there are many rendered environments that are inaccesible due to never-ending concerte walls, car-blocking poles, and invisible barriers. Plenty of classic film chases travel off the road and into open parking lots, city parks, seaside docks, truck loading docks, trainyards, shopping centers, open fields and hills, between narrow buildings, and more. I wish such areas weren't blocked as it limits the creativity one has in a car chase, and instead forces the player to rely on using the minimap.
 • No San Fran trolleys

Other than those issues, I really enjoy playing this game and certainly wouldn't call it horrible. What do you dislike about the demo Scorch?

As for the multiplayer demo, Ubisoft addressed the server issue, but with no ETA on a fix: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2381087925/m/3941030249

Appears to have been resolved. Even Cheapy was pleased with the MP demo!

I'm gonna boot it up here in a bit. MP is the big reason I'm getting this game.
