Dude WTF. No 60 gig HDD for 360?

CAGiversary!
The only thing that is stopping me from buying a 360 now is that I have a feeling they would have released a new 360 for $399.99 and instead of having a price drop, they would just give a 60 gig HDD instead of 20. Is there any word of this? It's BS. If PS3 launched with full force, that would force MS to actually "compete" but now it looks like thanks to PS3's launch failure, there will be no price drop or anything.

wow, so how is it out there in the future?

LOL. I didn't mean for my "rant" to bash any 360 fans. Basically I have the option of getting a 360 @Overstock for $350, but would rather pay $400 for a 360 with 60 gig HDD. I'm just wondering why they didn't release one already to combat PS3.

i have heard no news about a hard drive upgrade for 360. theres the 256 mb memory card coming out but the 60 gb HD is news to me for the first time.

Well, they don't have a 60 gig harddrive... We all realize this.

So, what's the point of holding your purchase hostage? And why do you think we care? ... and what do you want us to tell you?

Just make sure not to talk to your parents or get your Mom to fall in love with you.

Despite the bitching in this thread, you do kind of have a point. If you're not swayed enough to buy one already by the upcoming games, I'd just wait. We know that a larger capacity drive is coming...it just probably wouldn't be announced until after Christmas so it doesn't hurt current sales.

60 is a little excessive (both in price and the fact that you don't need it), but I'd easily buy a 40 GB one.

This reminds of the best episode of Futurama ever. "You're your own Grandpa you sick bastard!"

....because adding extra gigs to a HD isn't going to make a huge difference? The nature of the stuff you get on the 360 HD doesn't really require you to keep 60 gigs of it. You play a demo or watch a trailer a few times, then delete it. You can stream music from a computer or store about 1000 songs and not fill up all the space. Pretty soon you'll be able to stream WMV. XBL arcade games will never top 100mb, even if they did, you still wouldn't need 60 gigs. plus, you can always go back and redownload stuff. It's not like you can store porn on there either.

anyway, I see where you're coming from, since more space is better on a PC, but it's not that necessary with a game console.

and for these same reasons, and not needing 1080p movies HDMI blah blah etc. etc., I'm going with the $500 PS3 ;)

I like everyone else have the 20 gig which is 14 gigs when empty. Even with some cds on my 360. I have more then enough space. WTF are you going to do with 60 gigs.

Exactly. I have quite a bit of music on my 360 and even when I have a couple of demos I rarely fall under the available 10 gig point.

I honestly don't understand why anyone would claim to need a bigger hard-drive on the 360 unless you really want to keep all your demos. 20 (or 14) gigs should be more than enough for quite some time (if not the life of the console).

Why anyone wouldn't purchase a 360 over the size of the hard-drive is beyond me.

Keep in mind there hasn't been any big shifts in hard drive capacity in the time since Microsoft starting taking delivery on the drives used in the Xbox 360. There has been some action in the high end but that doesn't help MS any since they need to get the drive for the lowest price possible. Also, part of getting that price is committing to buying X million units from Seagate and any other suppliers.

The drive used in the original Xbox was obsolete when the console launched. On the same press release Western Digital sent out to announce the deal had an 'About the Company' section at the bottom touting that WD was the first company to ship 15GB per platter side. Microsoft needed a low price more than higher capacity. To get that price they had to guarantee WD and Seagate a certain amount of business. The remaining stock of Seagate Xbox 10GB drives were recently unloaded through Fry's at $15 each.

Microsoft is in a similar position on the Xbox 360 drive. They have a commitment to fulfill before they can consider putting a higher capacity drive in as standard. That commitment is likely many millions of drives short of its conclusion.

Another problem is that they cannot offer a higher capacity drive to new buyers without some way for existing owners to gain the same capacity. Providing a means for the average user to transfer their data is not easy. Nor are those users going to want to dump their existing drive rather than adding more capacity. USB can be used but that starts to get ugly in all sorts of ways in terms of keeping the user experience consistent.

Sony says they'll let users throw in any drive they like in the correct form factor but they haven't offer any suggestion on the data transfer issue either. It's a serious can of worms that takes a problem previously reserved for PC users and brings it to the console world. A lot of users will just make do with whatever cpacity they're given at the time of purchase rather than deal with the issues.

Dear lord,
What has happened to this thread?

Hopefully this will end it,

1) There are no currentt plans for a 60gb hd from microsoft.

2) Unless you have no space on your computer or have the inability to stream music, there should never be a reason to actually purchase said device.

I'm sorry you got bashed, but just order one asap and join us on live!

Real Simple.

I have about 500 songs on my hard drive.
Three Demos at the moment Test Drive, Lost Planet and Just Cause.
10 Videos from the marketplace, 15 XBL arcade titles plus all my gave saves and still have 6 gigs of space left.

There is really no need for 60 gig hard drive right now and I don't really see a need for it in the future.
