Don't really know much about e-readers except that I read that some of them have web browsers. Downloading books using 3g or wifi I assume is free apart from the cost of the book, but how about browsing the internet using the 3G connection?

On the Kindle you can browse the web using 3G for no extra charge.

That said, the experience sucks, the screen is small, it's very slow, only one color (black) etc. But it works to check gmail in a pinch etc.

This. It is slow and it's very basic web browsing, good only for gmail or wikipedia. Doesn't work too well for forums.
