Elite invented the open world space combat/trading/exploration genre in 1984 and is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential video games of all time. Many of the concepts in those other games were lifted directly from Elite and its sequels.
The last game in the series was Frontier: First Encounters which came out in 95. The company behind it has also made LostWinds, Kinectimals, and other notable games over the last 18 years.
