why would someone buy the system for 500 if they could get an 80gb system for the same price and a free game?

is this system suppose to be a collector's item?

Mainly for better BC. The 60GB (as well as the 20GB) model has hardware BC, whereas as the 80GB has software emulation.

Yes, the 60gb system has hardware backwards compatability with PS2 games. It actually has the PS2 chipset included with the system. The 80gb has software only BC, which is not as robust. The 40gb has NO backwards compatability with PS2 games. The 60gb model is no longer sold in stores and is difficult to find brand new. You can only get refurbished units or new ones from secondary sellers on Amazon who all want $600+ for the systems.

I have a 60gb and it is a great system, definitely the one to get if you want a PS3 and want to play PS2 games too. There are actually a lot of PS2 games still being released like Odin Sphere & God of War II.
