Soul Calibur IV Playable At CES 2008!

December 5, 2007

Namco Bandai Games will be showing off their goods at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show early January… They have confirmed that Soul Calibur IV will be playable! This industry invite only event is part of a ’special unveiling’ for Namco… There are hints that they will also reveal a new character for SC IV at the show! SDTEKKEN will be on hand at CES and hopefully Namco will have a Tekken 6 arcade machine playable for us as well… Right Namco? ;)

Oh yea dude, CES is heaven..

All the latest computers, TVs, audio, tech stuff...

+ The AVN (Porn) convention!

If they do have Tekken 6 there I'm going to do headspins on the show floor....

I'm with the "wait to see how it looks in motion" crowd, as far as the SFIV screenshot goes. The one shot we got definitely looks a bit... awkward.

Looking forward to the other big "IV" as well. It's funny how all four SoulCalibur games will have been released in the gap between Street Fighter III and IV.

I'm not surprised to see it in 3D. Kinda hard for any company to release strictly 2D games and be taken seriously... In the U.S. that is. I honestly was hoping for super Hi-Res 2D with fluid animation.

A few weeks ago I popped in Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the Northstar) while at work (yes on the weekend I play games at work) I wanted to show off to some friends. Anyways this stupid chick watching said, "Why are you playing that game? It looks old." Shit like that boils my blood and without thinking I replied, "So is your face." Long story short she didn't talk to me for a while.
You'll see some gameplay soon enough...

The trailer looks like how the gameplay is(rather on a 2D plane)...
I guess you have seen it in motion? If so are you a fan of the way it looks?

Well since they using the Street fighter EX engine they might as well bring back SKULLOMANIA!!!!

I've been playing Street fighter for a long time, and I've played them all... love em too... but I best if someone posts a pic of Ryu on SF EX (plus alpha), you'll see its the same model, and the same ugly face.. mixed with a little cell shading. Gameplay had better be tight.

I'm still a fan of 2d.. 3d models are nice, but sprites... I want full beautiful, lush HD Sprites! Fighting fans... am I wrong for that?!

Even if you made that story up, it's still amusing.

Aaaaanyway, the SFIV screenshot... it's an interesting art style, but I hope to God that they really do keep the gameplay strictly 2D. 3D graphics are good for having really accurate hitboxes that make sense, so this could be good for the game.

Or bad.

I gotta wonder if we'll get some crazy camera angles/movements in SFIV. That could be pretty tight, and the perfect way to justify the use of those 3D models. 2D gameplay with a 3D cinematic presentation during a fight (not too much unlike the trailer, perhaps?) would be a huge achievement in the fighting game genre.

I'd say this is pretty likely, simply because it would be a waste to have 3D models and NOT do something nutty with the camera. Any insights, Mr. Markman???

Yeah, if they use the camera to make it all flashy and cinematic, then it could be something beautiful. Just as long as that doesn't get in the way of the gameplay. If the camera prevents you from playing competitively, then it's a problem.

I don't mind too much. I was hoping for a super hi-res 2D game as well but I think that was hoping for too much in today's day. There's still a lot of animator detail and a nod towards cel shading like in Ryu's epic feet. The 1up article says that the gameplay stays strictly 2D, which I'm the most excited about. :)

I wish I was making it up. Sometimes I can't stand this girl. Weekends are pretty slow so most of the time we bring in games. She likes to watch and occasionally play, but she's a girl so she sucks. And if we're playing a game she doesn't find "fun" she bitches and moans about it, makes snyde comments and that day I just had enough. We shared several words that day ;)

If thats wrong then I dont wanna be right. All this new Tekken talk really does nothing for me. But I'll preorder every 'new' iteration of Guilty Gear months in advance.

And I say a little prayer every night before I go to sleep asking god to keep SF IV in 2D...
So is Tekken 6 gonna come to the 360 or what?
very slim chances... very slim. as proved by the arcade cabinet:

To clear a few things up... I'll quote the official press release that just went out last night...

... while the game is played in the classic Street Fighter 2D perspective with additional 3D camera flourishes.
So there ya have it! Honestly... Picture the teaser trailer we saw... on more of a 2D plane... and think of 3D pans/camera angles during certain moves that hit... There should be vids up of it 'soon'...

Also a few other notes...

SFIV will be 60FPS and home console release(s) will have online play. While the actual in game stuff won't look EXACTLY like the trailer, the gameplay will... The parry system is gone and the game takes place after SFII and before SFIII.. Kind of weird how they named it SFIV huh? lol... The new system is kind of like stuff seen in Guilty Gear and Arcana Heart... But I'm not sure I can officially say, I don't even know what the name of the new system is called...

Oh shit, someone leaked out some screens too lolol...
Eww.

Maybe it looks better in action, but 2D sprites FTW IMO
I dont mind the character models, they look like a watercolor painting. But I want the game to play on a 2D plane. None of this '3D camera flourishes' bullshit.

3D models fighting in 3D space = NOT Street Fighter.
Hm, ok.

Final judgment is reserved for seeing it in motion and actual play time, but I'm still excited.
Agreed. I really don't know how I feel about any of the screens just yet.

I guess I was one of the people hoping for an art style similar to 3S.

Ken looks like he is the deformed child of barbie and gumby.
Those screens look kinda bad.

Im worried, but yet maybe it will be so fast that we wont have to worry about it.

Wow, what a mess the SFIV thread has turned into.

Yet more evidence to support my on-going theory of what happens when you discuss fighting games (on CAG) outside this thread.

Like I've said before, this thread is the only reason I've stuck around CAG.

Yea, this thread is the best...

The SF IV thread, I started with good intentions, but that one turned sour quick...

I like how all the 'weirdos' in there complained about ppl who were big fighting game fans or 'hardcore'... like it was a deadly virus or something lolol... oh well I'm done with that thread... I usually make it a point not to argue with retards.

same as asian, I mainly come back due to this thread. it's like a weird brotherhood where even when people disagree there's a common respect for everyone's opinion as opposed to almost all other threads. My only gripe is that the general gaming thread seems to pull people away from this thread at times >_<

I'm still waiting for some direct feed hi-def versions of Tekken 6 videos. I like the direct feed ones so far alot, but want a better handle on how exactly the game looks in reality.

I just want Tekken 6 spinning happily inside my PS3.

In my normal, day to day life, I don't really know anyone who is into fighters. So I come here for discussion.

I have about 15 direct feed vids, decent quality... not in HD though... But way better than YouTube quality... I can upload a few of them if you'd like RR...

Where are you from? Any arcades nearby?

So I recently got the 2D fighter Itch after playing a bunch of KoF games and then KoF XI. So I pulled out the following for the PS2.

Your thoughts on which I should play first, which I shouldnt play, etc...

- Marvel Capcom 2: - I already have unlocked everyone in my save game, but a little Cable ownage is always fun.

- SF Anniversary Collection: - I mostly wanna play Third Strike out of this.

- SF Alpha Anthology

- Dragonball Z Budokan 3: - never played this, but I hear its one of the better DBZ games.

- Guilty Gear Accent Core: - This is still sealed. I played the hell out of all the other games, I hear this one isnt much different. Is it worth opening up?

-Capcom vs. SNK 2: - one of my favorite fighters of all time. Yes Im gonna take you for a ride!

- KoF 2006: - still sealed, but the other day I realized I have TWO of these sealed. It musta been on a $10 clearance or something. When you have over 200 ps2 games, sometimes you forget and buy doubles. I know its 3D, is it worth playing?

So what should I dive into and what should I chuck back into the pile?

Honestly, don't bother with the DBZ games, unless you're a huge fan... If you do however want some DBZ fighting action, I'd recc the SFC games over any of the others that are out...

Get Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 and play some Super Turbo and watch the great tutorial vids... Which can also be viewed here:
