I think that's the case, I've only gotten 2 invites to give out since I started my account.

Also, if you use Firefox, you can download an extension that add's a GMail box on the bottom status bar that will show you how many new messages you have. I use it and its great. Keeps my taskbar small, and I have Firefox running almost all the time so I'm covered. If it doesnt work for you at first, search the the newest version.
