Well i dont think they skewed up that badly it was just that there were other systems out at that point like sega was the first with online play.Now i dont necessarily remember the release of the dreamcast theat well which i think was the problem.They should of have incentives like extra games or maybe a mini game pack like playstation had .

If it were me i would have put a cd player in it considering cd players were expensive.also i would have had better games i would have not only had crazy taxi(which was amazing) i would of had some shooters.then for the shooters i would have used the onine to destroy everyone else.(hopefully)

Damn decent of you OP. I have mine already or I would enter your contest. I do think that you should announce the winners tonight though. That way they can start playing much sooner.
 
I would have signed more exclusive titles to the Dreamcast and then cut the price very early on so it was cheap enough that everyone could pick one up without thinking about the price just to play the great exclusive titles.
 
I would have put a DVD drive in the Dreamcast. The games being on DVD and the ability to play DVD movies would have helped it IMO. Thanks for the contest too.
 
Would have dug into the Sega catalog and done more game like Sonic Adventure. Alex Kid, Panzer Dragoon, Vector Man, etc. Also would have released titles sooner in the US.
 
I would have marketed the exclusive games better. Possibly using phrases like, "Only on..." and, "exclusively on..." Games like Phantasy Star Online and Skies of Arcadia should have been marketed a lot better.
 
The Sega Dreamcast was ahead of its time. Releasing such an innovative system with the aspect of online gaming, dashboard, etc., during the middle cycle of the PS2 was Sega's first failure. People were already too focused on the PS2 to let another system join the party. The 1st party games (2k series, Shenmue, PowerStone, etc) and 3rd party games were good enough for this console so the blame could not have been here. Marketing the system better would have not hurt. In essence, the release period and marketing were the downfall of the beloved Sega Dreamcast.

the biggest problem with the dreamcast was sega's history and the timing of the release. with the release of the sega cd, 32x, and the saturn all being rather lackluster and outshined by the newcomer, the playstation, it was hard for many of us to get excited and confident about the future of sega. and the timing was a problem because it came out between generations, which made it feel outdated soon after release with the ps2 looming with it's next gen graphics, dvd compatibility, and tremendous 3rd party support. i'd rather play soul calibur, chu chu rocket, and jet grind radio, but the masses want madden.
 
I think they could have done two things better. They could have done more with it's online capabilities, and they could have included a DVD drive or add-on.

I still have my dreamcast hooked up, because there's no better game IMO then Jet Grind Radio!
 
For the Dreamcast to have succeeded they would have needed the support of EA which Sega execs claimed that they didn't need EA. Ever notice the lack of Madden on DC? EA = Power, Power = Money, Money = DC2. Other problems were the marketing of the Saturn, 32x, sega CD, Consumers became cautious of Sega consoles when they saw the library of like 50 games for Sega CD and 32x, and didn't want to back a company that would charge them hundreds of dollars for a console that they'd drop support for, almost a year later. Also marketing of the DC itself, instead of pointing out how amazing games looked on DC vs. PSX, they tried to point to exclusive titles, which though impressive, your system can't live on first party titles unless you're hocking a fat italian plumber! RIP Dreamcast, i'm goin to japan later this year and I shall be picking up many a DC game while there :)
 
I think they should have done a better job to prevent piracy on their system and they should have spent more money into advertising in order to divert more attention away from the PS2.
 
They really needed to cut down on piracy, as it was easy to just go online and burn the game to a dvd. They needed to hype the system more, put out more testing booths for it, etc. Basically, besides the piracy issue, they had to market it better.

I would have made the console ship with a DeLorian time travelling car so that people would actually get the use out of it......The console was sadly too far ahead of it's time... It's not that crazy when you think about what high hopes Sega had with this console. I'd love a beta code :(
 
Better marketing is really the only thing they didn't do right. They had tons of games, a great system, everything went right. Just getting the word out was their problem.

Also, they should have gone back in time and bought a controlling share in Sony stock, and then shut down the company.
 
I would have come with a different approach and highlighted some of the key games as well as try to bring a variety of games to the console: fighting games, action games, rpgs, sports, racing, etc. I would have had it release in North America one month before Christmas, advertising it as "The Most High Tech Gaming System of it's Kind". That way all the kids will ask their parents to get it for Christmas thus sparking huge initial sales allowing for the continued production of games encouraging other gamers to buy the system for it's wide variety of games.
 
I would have came out around the same time as PS2, Made it cheaper then PS2, and tried to take some PS2 only games away from them and put them on Dreamcast.
 
One of the biggest points of success for the PS2 was the ability to play DVDs. If the Dreamcast had that ability I can assure you that Sega's console business will still be around. People just love watching movies, and convenience makes a great couple with games and movies. 2nd biggest point was the games. The games are absolutely fantastic on the Dreamcast, in fact i personally still play some of them today. If only they were marketed better; then the Dreamcast would've had a fighting chance. Also They should've also marketed and pumped out more casual games for the casual market. There were plenty of people that could've shared the experience with their friends and family, just as Nintendo taking advantage of that.
 
They needed more Sonic games. Sonic games still sell great even without being on a Sega console and that was their mascot but they didn't put out enough.
 
I would market it alot and have do what xbox did with mountain make some easy to win and great games. All consoles need to put the games first then hardware.
 
I would have done exactly what Microsoft has done.

Honestly, for me, the Dreamcast was a gem of a console which had some great exclusive titles such as Powerstone and Shenmue which made it one of the better consoles in it's generation but it lacked certain functions such as dvd abilities. I would have changed the controllers, knowing that the only company who could pull off a new control scheme would be Nintendo. But, then again, the controller couldnt have been that bad because Microsoft literally just took the Dreamcast controller's design and stuck the green gem in the middle - which was hated just as much as the Dreamcast one.

If you wanted to actually release the Dreamcast as a successful console it needed to be the first console released as it was outdated compared to the PS2 and the Gamecube so the release of the PS2 not long after totally killed it. I would have waited for the PS2's release and then upped the hardware that the PS2 was made with and then released it as an ultimately superior console. Sounds like the Original XBOX huh?

I would have a flashy ad campaign aswell, the Dreamcast was never very advertised. I would make sure that it stood true to the ads.

Oh and a hard-drive. Back then thats what I really wanted and only got this generation. Hard-drives on consoles back then would have kicked ass.

Oh - and I'd actually advertise the fact that you can play online with the Dreamcast. PS2 had to wait 3 or more years for the ethernet pack to play 'true' online.
 
If memory serves me right, The Dreamcast did little in the way of advertising/pr/marketing, and I would have used a lot more. If the market does not know your product exists, you're doomed to fail already. They did advertise some games, like NFL 2K, but with competition like Madden and NFL Quarterback Club, why get a new system when you can play a similar game on one you already have? The hardware, software, and specs were all amazing, but Sega relied too heavily on word of mouth. Hell, who remembers the Sega Saturn?

I think if the Dreamcast sold Barbie Horse Adventures then it would have sold over 1 million copies, which would have brought the Dreamcast to a revolution.
 
Steal a DeLorean, build a flux capacitor, get up to 88 MPH on the freeway, activate flux capacitor, smack some sense into the people that thought blast processing, Sega CD, Sega 32X, would be a good idea. Probably best if I go slap around the guys that came up with the Saturn as well. Thaw the DeLorean then come back to a future where people have not lost faith in Sega and it looks like this.

I don't know why I did that I already have a key. I never watched Back to the Future either, I only made it seem like I did through information scrounged through Wikipedia :drool:
 
Listened to Peter Moore instead of going by what Sega of Japan thought would work. They really screwed the pooch doing that strategy.
 
First off i would have waited to release the dreamcast. Sony had just announced the specs for the PS2 which more or less changed my mind on which i wanted at the time. I was looking for a console that could also act as a dvd player and the dreamcast wasn't that. I would also have pulled it back into development and probably thought about including broadband instead of dial-up or include both and would've thrown in a dvd drive to compete with the other developers. In the end a dreamcast with a dvd player wouldve allowed them to produce higher quality games and may have allowed em to compete in the generation a bit longer then they did.
 
SEGA vs BIG PLAYERS

I believe it was due to overall consensus and marketing. First, SEGA (which was having problems at the start) was facing against major players such as Nintendo and Sony. These two companies already had very successful consoles in the past such as PS1, SNES, etc.. people knew that the next generation of consoles would most likely be another hit. With SEGA, it was more along the lines of taking chances. Since SEGA was struggling and really didn't have major marketing to promote the dreamcast, it wasn't surprising it fell.

In essence, SEGA's Dreamcast was running up against Nintendo's N64 and others. People knew of the impact the SNES made to the gaming industry and the N64 was no different. What most people didn't know about was Dreamcast since A. there was barely any marketing for it and B. SEGA didn't really have anything to praise upon at the time.
 
To Support it, one of the greatest consoles of all times, great games, great technology for the time and dumped it like a 2 dollar hooker.
 
Better exposure for one. My dad has no idea what it is. A sleeker design, and maybe quite possibly and more casual gaming environment.
 
Two things that could have made it better for me when i was little:

A) I got a broken one from santa claus ;) Dead serious...my dad tried to explain to me how the elves make mistakes and how Best Buy honors Santa's Creations lol
B) Made the console dog piss proof...my dog pissed on it two days after I got it from Best Buy...it wasn't the best of Christmases lol
 
I think what I would have done first is strike a deal with EA, considering they are the largest game publisher in the US, and I think the lack of EA sports as well as other EA games definitely hurt. I distinctly remember seeing Madden on PS2 the first time and being blown away.

Secondly, online capabilities would have made the system a contender for years, possibly making it popular enough to keep Sega consoles around. We could even be using Dreamcast3's or something right now if that were so.
 
I would have helped out 3rd party developers to push out more games. I would have taken the portable idea from the controller and expanded on it more (kinda like the PSP-PS3 relationship thats being built). I also would have tried an xbox live type service, but that may not have been as feasible with broadband not being what it is today. Of course the DVD player would have been nice, but that didn't stop the wii from selling.
 
get rid of that 56k modem and use something faster and make it easier to log onto the internet instead of messing with all those settings
 
TWO WORDS- CRAZY TAXI that game rulz!!! I never got down with the dreamcast because sega f*cked me when I bought the orginal sega cd!! The best thing sega ever had was the SEGA GENESIS!!!! THAT SYSTEM ROCKS!!!!! BUT back to the question, I would have had more advertisement and a better price point, and more games!!! If I don't win then this is a consipracy!!!!!!!! CAG ROCKS!!!!!
 
Even if I don't win this is worth posting. Since EA's non-support was such a huge factor. I'd have run commercials all day long exclaiming that EA was a bunch of money grubbing idiots who would sooner sell their mothers than support Sega because they feared the competition and that even if they came crawling back to Sega we'd never see a crappy Madden rehash on our mighty Dreamcast.
 
I believe that the Sega Dreamcast would've done better if they would've actually downgraded the system and made it cheaper. At the time, online gaming wasn't very popular and other niche things in the Dreamcast weren't popular. If you take those things out they could've sold at a cheaper price and enjoy success (like the Wii). Also, lack of third party support (namely EA) really hindered the Dreamcast since they didn't have much First Party marketability outside of Sonic.
 
I would have invented the dual analog controller and added a dvd drive to it, as well as marketed the online aspect properly. I would have also given away free porn with every system.
 
The timing of the release of the Dreamcast is by far the downfall of it, only months before the PS2. It has some of the best games and supported online play, but the timing killed it entirely. So it would have been best to have at least done much more marketing and of course if the system came out much earlier.

To make the Dreamcast more successful in the US:

1. Market game franchises that are popular in the US right off the bat (SONIC and GOLDEN AXE and EARTHWORM JIM come to mind). Remember, SEGA at this point had many franchises to exploit on the Dreamcast. Instead, bundles of NFL 2K1 and Ecco the Dolphin emerged. N64 marketed Mario. PS2 marketed GT, Metal Gear, Twisted Metal, etc. SEGA needed to lead with the heavy hitters!

2. Defeat game piracy with some protection on discs - Eventhough it was nice to pop a DC game in the cd burner and copy it, this process prevented anyone from actually spending money on games. One person bought a game and burnt 15 versions for friends. IMO, this crippled the DC.

3. Improve the online gaming - although they were the first to innovate this in a home console, it was a painful process, and the accessories were weak (who wanted a keyboard). AOL and 56k was pretty much dead at this point, so perhaps DSL was the better way to go.

4. Expand the VMU - these were cool gadgets, but other than some limited play in Virtua Tennis, they were lame, and required additional battery power

5. Controller redesign - these controllers were bad versions of the N6f controller - they needed to simplify controllers to the PS1 / SNES controller

Just some ideas, but I still play my DC every now and then. It is by far a great console that was just too ahead of its time.
