Free month of Xbox Live Gold?

I recently bought a 4 GB 360 system with Kinect and I read on amazon and on the box that it includes a free month of Gold on Live. I already have a zune so I used that account to log onto my Xbox. Do I need to make a new account in order to get that free month? I've never used Xbox Live before with this account or any other account so I'm really confused.

You have to make a new account on that 360 to get the free month.

sort of related... the $1 a month is an offer during the free month to extend just 1 month then at regular price right?
