icrosoft confirms its next-gen console will play many games for its current-gen console, including Halo, PGR, KOTOR, FIFA, LOTR, and more.

After playing coy for months about the Xbox 360's backwards compatibility, Microsoft has finally come clean. The software behemoth announced late Friday that over 200 games from its current-generation console will play on its next-generation console.

As one might expect, Microsoft has made sure all the top Xbox games are supported, including Halo and Halo 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I and II, Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Black, and the three Grand Theft Autos: III, Vice City and San Andreas. A total of 212 Xbox games will be playable on the 360 at launch, though Microsoft says that number will increase. Friday also brought good news to Xbox Live addicts. Any of the backwards-compatible games will be playable cross-platform between the Xbox 360 and Xbox over Xbox Live. That means would-be Master Chiefs with a 360 can still own their friends playing on current-generation consoles--although the former will see the carnage in higher resolution. However, there is a catch. To play an Xbox game on the 360, players must first insert the current-gen game into a next-gen console hooked up to Xbox Live. The system will check if the console has the latest emulation software. If not, it will automatically download said software, install it on the 360, restart, and load the original Xbox game. Obviously, a 360 hard drive--which comes with the Halo and Halo 2 software preinstalled--is required the backwards-compatibility software. For 360 owners who either can't or won't log onto Xbox Live, Microsoft offers two other solutions. First, they can go to Xbox.com, download the emulators, burn them onto a CD, and then insert said CD into the 360, which will auto-install the software. The other option is to order a free CD from Xbox.com which will be mailed to the requestor for a "nominal" fee. However, the CD will be mailed out for free to Japanese 360 owners. A complete list of the Xbox games that will be playable on the 360 when it ships on November 22 is below:

Yourself!Fitness

No X-men lengeds 2, no doom 3, no farcry... >.<

But i must admit, 200+ is a lot more than i expected since they been so hush on it up to the week of release.

I want burnout revenge and this is alot of games so this is real good. I like that they would let you burn the emulation software and install it . Or you can order it online .
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!!!!!!!! 200 GAMES!!!

Edit: NO ELDER SCROLLS!?!
Yep, it was the first one I looked for too and nada.

Where the hell is Chaos Theory? Damnitt, this really sucks. I hope they hurry up.

Nice job on the others, though.

Yourself! Fitness sold like, what, 10 copies? But we can't play some of the high caliber titles from this year or Panzer Dragoon Orta?

But you get those masterpieces Kabuki Warriors and Alias to play on your 360.

A lot of the titles listed are pretty crappy and I doubt many people will go through the effort to actually test if they are infact 100% compatible. Kind of disappointing that some of the more popular games from the last year did not make the list yet.

Don't panic, there are more games on the way...

I hadn't heard about the option of burning the latest software to a CD, thats a good idea. Should appease people who can't or won't use their Xbox online.
People bitched when they thought it was only gonna be Halo, Halo 2 and Fable. When it's revealed to be 200+ games, they bitch some more.
and dammit we've got plenty more to bitch about!
People bitched when they thought it was only gonna be Halo, Halo 2 and Fable. When it's revealed to be 200+ games, they bitch some more.
The people, they like to bitch, no? ;)

The biggest problem I see with the list is that less than two dozen games are games that have been released in 2005, which is only about 10% of the games released for the Xbox this year.

I don't see Chaos Theory, Mech Assault 2, and Azurik on that list. I'm a bit displeased, but it is nice to see such a large list of games.

Keep in mind that this is not a final list by any means, there will be more titles added before the 360 even ships. I know for a fact that Mechassault and Mechassault 2 are going to be on there soon.
yes raw 2 !!!

they better get wrestlemania 21 on that list
Now WrestleMania 21 can be in 720p/1080i and you can watch it stutter and crash in hi-def goodness!

Games that I own that aren't on the list... * = extremely dissapointed about

*Silent Hill 2

Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance
*The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind GOTY
*Doom 3: Collector's Edition
*Shenmue II

*Beyond Good & Evil
*Deus Ex: Invisible War

I have to say I'm happy that there's as many titles that are BC as there are, but damn... 50% of that list is crap games. It definitely was not picked by a gamer, but by a marketing department that only wanted to cater to uber-casual fans. The consumer that buys Disney games, and movie based titles will be happy.

Hmm. Since this list, despite most of your grousing, is far larger than ANY of us expected to see at launch, I wonder why MS held off in releasing it?

It's a pleasant surprise, to be sure; however, wouldn't they have quashed any BC bitching from months ago by putting this list out?

A very nice list to start with considering some of the horror stories being passed around, but still a long way to go.

My stand out needs:

That game was a waste of my $50 even after I had to send it back! :bomb:

Every single game I own, aside from Alias and Scrapland aren't on the list. Oh well, better luck next update I guess.

How do you get Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon, but none of the Splinter Cell series. Not that it really matters because I own an Xbox just found it odd.

I appreciate the list, my xbox has died-the dvd drive, and I have many games yet to play on it. So this helps me justify spending the dough on a 360. A silly thing perhaps but it is making it easier for me to think about parting with 600 dollars for a video game system (figure extra controller and a couple games to start)

I'm glad I'll be able to play my most favorite game of all time when the 360 releases: Drake. Microsoft had me worried there for a moment.

Keep in mind that that list is just games that will play at launch, there are many other games to be added.

To the naysayers:

EAT IT.

they still want to sell Xboxes so the most recent games won't be available for awhile which is stupid but whatever, I'm keeping my Xbox.

:imwithst: WTF - Samurai Jack is on the list? The game wasn't even released for the Xbox!!! Weird also that Republic Commando isn't on the list, but most other SW games are.
they still want to sell Xboxes so the most recent games won't be available for awhile which is stupid but whatever, I'm keeping my Xbox.
Nice theory.

Except Half-Life 2, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, San Andreas, and the new Harry Potter game are on the list

I'm really surprised about THAW actually, considering that there is a 360 version of that game too.

Why are you guys acting like this is a final list?

This is the first batch of games, these are games that will be BC at launch, more games will follow within the next few months! Quit pissing and moaning. For god's sake, Catwoman is BC, so chances are the game you want will eventually be added.
