LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Southern California man has sued MGM Mirage for preying on his gambling addiction and inducing him to borrow and lose millions of dollars at its Las Vegas casinos.

The suit was filed on Monday in a Los Angeles U.S. District Court by Shibley Horaney, a resident of Newport Beach, California, who says that since 1995 he has lost and paid back about $4 million on credit provided to him by the MGM Grand and $1 million on credit from The Mirage casino.

In 2003, he borrowed and lost another $475,000, which the casinos are still seeking to collect.

Alan Feldman, a spokesman for MGM Mirage, declined to comment specifically on Horaney's suit, but said similar lawsuits in the past have been shown to have no merit.

"There are lots of cases where people make their own decisions and choices then turn around and sue the casino," he said.

The suit alleges that MGM contacted Horaney over the phone and by mail over a period of at least nine years, offering to provide free transportation and hotel rooms as well as lines of credit to gamble at the casinos.

The lawsuit argues that California law bars such predatory conduct and does not allow collection of gambling losses.

Give me a break....

Anyone remember Lost in America? Maybe the Mirage could be the Casino with a Heart...

I am going to sue CAG, Cheapy, and everyone of you for fueling my gaming habits. I have lost hundreds of dollars on great game deals and hundreds of hours playing games and reading the posts on this addictive site.

My lawyers will be calling all of you!!

I don't expect most people do. I saw it a long time ago, and I found it to be rather dry, even for Albert Brooks. I should probably give it another chance, I like a lot of his other stuff.

This is true, it definitely was a lot more of a Tenenbaums type comedy [only better] than say a Vacation comedy.
I mainly remember because I referred to it this weekend when we were in Vegas losing money :)

Exactly. There's so many cases of people suing when they screw up.

I never understood how people can go to casino's and spend so much money at once. Even in my speech class last semeter, we had to give a speech with a point (like the morale of the story type thing). 3 people talked about how they lost a ton of money at Atlantic City. Last time I went to the casino with a friend, I spent $10, which lasted about 30 minutes (video poker), lost it all and left the casino. My friend also quit black jack after losing $25. If I had a ton of money, maybe I would spend more at the casino, but with the odds so in favor of the casino, I can't see losing more than $10 or $20 at once.

Well, we went this weekend, and definitely lost some money at the tables and in the slots. We were playing nickel/quarter slots, .50-1.00 blackjack, and 3-5$ craps. I lost 40 bucks at the craps table, which wasnt' too bad I guess seeing as how I had never played before and didn't have a strategy until the last 10 bucks or so. But there were people there, at the cheap table, who were tossing down 50's and 100's to cash in, and betting 20-80 bucks on one roll of the dice. Too rich for my blood. But it's easy to lose a lot of money quick, and you think 'One more roll/spin/hand.' In the long run, the house always wins; the trick is to play games you can win in the short run, then haul ass out of there.
