Report: GameStop no longer accepting PS2 trade-ins as of June 1st (update: confirmed)
By Joe Pollicino

Now that the PS2's started taking steps toward retirement with Sony ceasing its production in Japan, it seems GameStop doesn't plan to keep the console under its roof for much longer. According to a leaked in-store display posted to Reddit by eGORapTure, the gaming retailer will no longer accept the 12-year-old system for trade-ins as, effective June 1st. Our friends at Joystiq contacted multiple stores to confirm the news and many said the policy is indeed set to go into effect. Unsurprisingly, PS2-related accessories and titles will also be refused for trade-ins once the date rolls around. We've reached out to GameStop's corporate representatives for comment and will let you know what we hear back. For now, you can find more info at the via and source links. Well, they gotta make room for those PS4 boxes -- however they end up looking, right?

Update: We confirmed with GameStop corporate that the June 1st date is correct. More information is available here.

I thought they stopped accepting PS2 stuff awhile ago? Since most GS stores have cleared out their PS2 stuff and they've had an ongoing sale trying to clear out all those games they have.

They began consolidating them to certain stores and they have had some B2G1F/B2G150% sales on PS2 games and they have a $1 bin full of junk... that's about it. What sucks is that in consolidating, most stores threw out cases/manuals... so a majority of the left over games are in the yellow sleeves.

The GC saw a B2G2F sale before it was clearanced, so I'm guessing we'll see something similar here.

Depending on how much your stores sold, either they stopped taking PS2 games in on April 1st, or they are part of wave 2 which will stop taking in games on June 1st.

Saw that sign above the PS2 games at a couple of different stores recently. Right now they're having a b2g1 free sale to clear out what stock they have left.

Holy crap I thought they did this a couple years ago

And what were they offering, like 25 cents a game tops?

A couple weeks ago there was were two guys at Gamestop hogging both registers. They each had a binder of PS2 games and most of them were not being accepted. The cashiers just had to deal with them and nobody could actually buy anything so I decided to leave.
TBH, anyone with PS3/360 games needs to be dumping those now. By the end of year most of those games are going to be worth a dollar.
Yeah whatever. This gen isn't going to take off like people think it is. It will be 1-2 years post launch before the new XBox & PlayStation are the primary system for the majority of the playerbase.

Plus look how much the top GameCube games are worth now, anywhere from $20-$80. All the top ps2 rpg's are worth big bucks also, especially the .hack games.

I will now stop feeding the troll.

Why would you get rid of them at all? You don't get much for them anyway and it's nice to have a library.

I've actually been trying to bolster my formerly meager PS2 collection. I was an XBox boy during that console cycle, so my PS2 collection was always a bit scarce. Over the past two years I've been playing catch up. Also, GameStop's increasingly poor selection of PS2 titles has made it much more difficult to collect the good stuff. Thank goodness I've had some non-GameStop used game stores open in my area.

The ol' PS2 collection is looking pretty good now. I'm especially proud of having all three Shadow Hearts games, both volumes of Digital Devil Saga, Silent Hill 2-4, and Fatal Frame II and III.
