Gamestop removed OnLive vouchers from Deus EX: HR; Now Pulling Game From Shelves
The codes aren't in the dumpster. They're in the pockets and backpacks of gamestop employees. You'll be able to get those codes this evening on ebay.
I was about to say that. If that happens, lets report the listings.

Gamestop is well on its way for another consecutive year of being the worst company of the year both online and b&m for the annual CAG awards.

I'm a little confused over this whole situation, maybe somone can clarify please.

The "reasons why" (See the word Excuse) GS took this action was because they consider OnLive a Competitor. To what?
Last I checked their version of a streaming OnLive service "Spawn Labs" Hadn't even launched. Or do they consider OnLive a competitor to Impulse?
Wouldn't Impulse be a more of a competitor to Steam?

The Spawn Labs project, which is similar to what Gamefly is doing with streaming rentals and of course to OnLive complete business model, is in beta testing right now via Gamestop managers. It's supposed to go live sometime next year. I think it's even supposed to include console games.

Good luck going dumpster diving. These are going into the pockets of Gamestop employees for their own personal use, or to sell on EBay, if they're that stupid to risk their jobs for selling them.
I dislike GS as much as the next guy, but can you really say that? I have scored plenty of good deals at GS in the past, along with the many trade-in deals they have offered. The do have some nice deals from time to time.
Yeah I can. BestBuy has been crushing GS since they started their program.

I can't opinionate on the old school stuff as I don't buy them, but this gen, yeah there's no question how bad GS is. All their deals aside, it seems like you have to be a socially awkward mongloid with 0 common sense in order to land a job in one of the stores, at least in my stores anyway.

Gamestop has really opened themselves up to a huge lawsuit from OnLive. No where in the memo did they say anything about destroying the code, only to "discard" it.

So basically the majority of these codes that end up in the wild have a potential to be of Gamestop origin, which could mean Gamestop is responsible for lost revenue of each copy sold through second-hand market.
First thing they need to do is train employees, I hate to say it but the poor customer service I've gotten at Gamestop pales in comparison to what I've had to deal with at my local Best Buy.

Also fuck Gamestop!
Tell you what, one of the local BestBuys has incorporated the new look gaming section and has a gaming specialist or two. Met him a couple weeks back and WOW what a difference. Knows whats what, is incredibly helpful. Going back tonight to get the inFAMOUS bundle since he contacted me last night to let me know its now in stock.

Long story short is they are working on it, lets just hope it keeps going.

OP needs to change thread title to "don't shop at gamestop - retailer is opening and removing content from new copies of Deus Ex HR"
The codes aren't in the dumpster. They're in the pockets and backpacks of gamestop employees. You'll be able to get those codes this evening on ebay.
Isn't there a certain level of fraud selling 'free' codes that were not included in games?
I'll keep shopping at Gamestop when I can get the best deal there. Unlike, say, Amazon, at least they contribute to my community, hire my neighbors, pay local taxes, etc. Yes, this Deus Ex stuff is some shady nonsense, just like the selling of open games as new... which is why I never buy those. I just take advantage of trade-in bonuses and deals on used stuff like a good little CAG. :)

And let me further draw the wrath of the pitchfork-carrying mob by saying this thread really should be moved. It may be an important issue to you, but this board is supposed to be about specific game deals, not a forum for consumer outrage.
Just want to say thank you for this opinion. I shop mostly at Best Buy, but this rationale gives me another reason as to why Best Buy trumps Amazon.

I like BestBuy but their used selection is crap... a dozen games or so, compared to the hundreds or even thousands at any GS.

To be honest, the promotion seems kind of odd. If someone is buying the physical game, odds are they don't need or want to play the full game through Onlive. I mean, perhaps a few will but the majority will either have a useless code, or something they can sell on ebay to recoup some money (one currently selling for $20).
Here's the first Onlive code sale I've seen on Ebay.

Hard to know if they bought it somewhere else and sold it to get some of the cost of the game back or what, but there you have it.

Yah, Id guess its someone who doesnt use Onlive either cause they'd know how many promos go on that paying $45 dollars for any game on the system that doesnt come with another brand new game or console is crazy

Yeah that's true, they seem to be hit and miss depending on location. I was speaking more towards the trade in values.

Sucks to say this but something like this wont really have that much of an effect to the company as a whole, they are just to big of a store.

That's what she said.

I picked up DXHR from Best Buy today and they managed to sell me a complete, new product.

So now I have this OnLive code that I'm never going to use. What should I do with it, is there a market for that sort of thing?

I'm sure youd find a CAG who'd glady take the code off your hands. I'd offer you a few bucks for it but I already got a copy

Well that is why you should have bought it new at GameStop. They would have opened the box and discarded the code for you at no extra charge. Now you know why GS is so much better than Best Buy /sarcasm.

Well you could sell it on Ebay like the previous asshat Louie listed (Dont wear an ass for a hat)

Believe it or not , a great many CAG's have an OnLive system., so you could list it for trade.

OnLive needs users. They've been throwing out deals because they need to build up a good sized user base for their business to take off. That's made difficult by the skepticism people have for their model. I've seen tons of comments from people who claim they will never use the service and many haven't even tried it. That's why they're putting the codes in. I'm guessing OnLive is more behind it than Square Enix.

That's the business side. On the user side I sort of get it. I have a nice laptop that's thin and light but isn't good for gaming. It'd be nice to play the same games on both it and my desktop. Of course without the ability transfer saves between them, I'm not likely to. Besides, my laptop is where I play my old adventure games and the like. It's nice having an excuse to go back and play my old favorites without feeling like I should play all of the new stuff that I have available.

Now I don't exactly hate gamestop but that is a bitch move. Hoping they get what they deserve though.

And that's their excuse. Wow.

That's what I was thinking.

Any PC gamer worth their weight isn't going to waste their time with onlive.

That being said, it still is shady shit what GS is doing.

the sad thing is most people probably wouldn't care about the Onlive code since they don't use it anyway. they're only upset about the principal of the thing

But what do we have if not our principles?!?!?!

I've been in about 5 or 6 game stops in the last month, (I had a buy 2 get 1 coupon, I got it for renewing my Game Informer subscription otherwise I don't shop there) and I think I saw PC games at only one of them...

FYI for Oregonians, the Wilsonville store is full of MORONS! I knew more about their sales and deals than they did

This probably happened a lot. I already don't stop at Gamestop so I suppose my outrage is moot and it seems to me the uninformed masses who shop at gamestop will continue to be unaware of this event. Hopefully there will be some sort of legal ramifications though. Normally I'm not for suing but this seems to be pretty blatant.

I would like to sincerely thank Gamestop for feeding the trolls. Good timing to since the HP touchpad thread was losing its steam.

You said it... They're not CAGs... They're MORONS! lol

I am not surprised at this move by GS really... I've always known their business model, which is to gouge customers... I don't think GS has made $ off me since I got my GBA Micro there 2 years ago. lol I hope they keep doing these kinda things. That way, they can dig their grave faster.

As CAGs, we should have already had all the deals we need on our games.... and CERTAINLY new releases NEVER have deals at GS. :)

And this is why I haven't shopped at GameStop in years. For the most part, their "deals" are terrible, and the employees I've experienced were either rude or ignorant about what I wanted. Constantly pushing preorders and magazine subscriptions down my throat got annoying real quick. Avoiding all of that with Amazon and/or Best Buy has been great.

Hopefully the majority of PC gamers are aware that this is happening-- as a gamer, it hurts to think someone, somewhere has been cheated out of a free code.

i've always defended gamestop on these forums. i love that they gave us cag16, i love the b2g1 sales, and i love the in-store look up. i've never been bothered by stickers and i just don't buy games if they're gutted.

but this is ridiculous. they've gotten away with illegal shit for a long time (gutting, selling "The Guy Game" used, employees renting new games) but that stuff never bothered me. but to actually remove one of the items that comes in a new package, and not inform the consumer let alone offering a discount because this has been removed is just plain stupid.

power to the players indeed.

I for one shop at gamestop when the deal is right or I need a cheap as fuck used game that will never be reprinted again.

With that said I did buy Deus Ex Augmented for PC from them. When I got it it was wrapped up (not really good but it was shrink wrapped, no clue if it was the original though) and not gutted so no clue if they took the code from them or not. Even if I don't use the code they have NO RIGHT to remove something that is supposed to come with the game if you pre ordered it. I mean if I buy a gutted copy 3-4 months later, whatever, but not if you pre purchase it. Besides I only pre ordered it there because I had credit.

This is fucking bullshit. I hope they get their asses sued big time for this.

Does your box list anywhere that it comes with the OnLive voucher?

I am sure this has been said already...everyone who bought the game from GS should immediately return it and buy the game from a different retailer. End of story.

I think there should be a standard on what is called "New" If Gamestop wants to say that an opend copy is "New" then why can i sell my copy to them as "New". It's kinda like the thing with 4G on phones, some companies just renamed their 3G to 4G, now there is something that is setting the limits for what is and isn't 4G.

I argued that the game wasn't new and tried to get them to at least take $5 off, the guy wouldn't budge.. so I just walked out, what a joke Gamestop.

OnLive likely approached square-enix about packaging the code in with the PC version as a promo. On Live may have even paid SquareEnix for the right to do so.

If I was onlive (and squareenix/eidos) i'd be really upset at gamestop at this point. Upset enough to favor other retailers in future promotions/negotiations.

Even though I agree this is an important issue, this thread needs to moved. If everyone has an important issue the whole forum will get bogged down.

Mods, move the thread please.
