It's not that the 3DS version is awful, it just doesn't have the free-roam mode that the console versions do.

Gameplay-wise, it's just the same as Lego Batman, which played fine as a game, only now with a LotR skin.

I didn't really care for the free roam in either on consoles, and especially Batman had a lot of glitches and performance issues for me...I would have preferred the old hub world style to be honest.
 
missed GoHastings Vita version for $9.99...OOS now, but picked up the Vita version on Amazon for $14.99
