Good co-op games for catching up with a friend

Hi,

One of my close friends recently joined the Navy and has moved to South Carolina (I'm in Michigan). We'd like to find some good PC games to play together while we chat on headset, so I'm looking for games that have a fun co-op campaign rather than something that's competitive.

So far I'm considering Borderlands, Left 4 Dead/Killing Floor, and maybe RE5.

Does anyone have any other good suggestions?

We like shooters (3rd person and 1st) and RPGs, but if it has a good co-op campaign we'll likely play through anything.

Thanks for any help.

L4D is a no brainer. my buddy keeps begging me to get on League of Legends (arena type RPG), but I haven't done it yet. Final Fantasy XIV is coming out next month if you guys are in to MMOs.

On my list of free and legal PC games (my sig has a direct link or you can take a look at the stickies) there are lot of co-op games.

Here are few you may enjoy...

AVA aka Alliance Of Valiant Arms

There is a great mode called 'Prison Escape' - Video Below

Half-Life 2: Deathmatch

There are maps you can auto download from servers where it will be you and your friend (or more) versus monsters from the game in a survival/domination setting. There are other version and types too like the vid below shows...

Battleswarm: Field Of Honor

Alien Swarm

League Of Legends

Savage 2

Check those out for now and see if you and your friend like it.

I had a few friends and family in the military for co-op we would play some AVA quite often along with other competitive games like Quake Live and Nexuiz.

I need to go through my list and make a denotation of co-op games...this topic comes up a lot.

That looks like fun but reminds me of L4D(2)

Also, I don't really trust that ijji site. I saw another one of their fps that looked cool also.

It plays like L4D. It's quite fun. Especially towards the end when you have to do escorts as well fend off against a horde of prisoners.

What do you mean by 'trust that ijji site?'

They have a great selection of games. I would not put any money into them personally but from my experience with them it's been quite fun.

I don't know I'm a little paranoid and it looks suspect to me. I've read up a little about them in the last few minutes and reading that they have an HQ in California makes me feel a little better.

What sort of restrictions are set on their games??

No need to be paranoid. I'm a bit like that myself so I make sure all games I post and put up are on the up and up. There are many freeware games that I don't put up because of what I consider spyware/malicious software or intents.

As for restrictions none that I know off. For AVA since I only play the full free version any weapon I earn I can only keep for a limited time and once I use up the time I am back to the default weapons and/or permanent guns that I earned. You can buy weapons and other stuff if you like.

They use to have lag issues back in the day when 99% of their servers were overseas but that's gone now they have American servers all over the place.
Thanks a lot for the suggestions, guys. Megazell, particularly. I'll check some of those games out.
Glad I can help.

BTW - In my last post where I stated Weapons replace with items...that's what they called in the game/store for AVA.

You're much braver than I. I probably wouldn't have tried it if someone hadn't scanned/tried it before me.

Doesn't sound too bad. In about one month's time I'll be back into PC gaming (something other than counter-strike).

I've been messing with freeware game since the early 90's. Back then it was rough...now you have a HOST of sites that highlight them, game development sites that offer them as an showcase of student work and you also have mainstream companies like EA, Valve and others that create or release former retail games to the public quite often...my problem is there are SO many now that it gets over whelming...while back in the day if you had 20 for the year...now you get 20 a day. My poor searchbot shoots me about 70 games a week...Out of those 70 I will probably post/play about 10 of them.
I didnt know league of legends was f2p, thanks for that.
It's been free since 07/09.

because of the retail version i just assumed otherwise. i think there was even a sale for it in the last few months somewhere.

Yeah. There are a lot of places where they still sale games that have long went 'freeware.'

Dungeon and Dragons Online, Age Of Conan, Lord Of The Rings Online and others...shoot, there is a Gamespot around where I volunteer at that still Matrix Online for $29.99. :smh:

While League of Legends is F2P, initially you have no control over which champions you can use. Buying the retail box grants you immediate access to ~40 champions (iirc), and grants you some of their in-game currency, used for buying other champs or in-game skins. Without the retail box, you can only use random champions, until you earn enough in-game currency to permanently unlock some.

So, while you never need to give them a penny to play the game, spending $20 on the box will grant you a lot of champions that'd take months to earn.

interesting, thats one of the things that turned me off when i tried it out. $20 bucks is nothing. guess ill try it a little more and see if its worth the purchase.

If that's the case I would hit up stores that are not known for games like STAPLES they usually have it in the bargain bin section for $9.99 or less. Personally, I don't mind the randomness of it all.

Check out Alien Swarm. It's free on Steam and it's pretty ballin'. 4 player co-op. Borderlands is a good one if you haven't already played it. If you have, you probably have little interest in playing it over. :p

Dawn of War II has coop for its entire singleplayer campaign. It also has competitive multiplayer and "The Last Stand" which is a hero-based horde style mode.
