FAQ
Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Arkansas, California, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has PSP/DS values.

im with you hobbie on this one. I never hold on to games once I beat them. My backlog is so deep and game values just go down with age. No sense in keeping a game that will just sit there.
I have to wonder that too. That's why I buy used or wait till a few price drops have taken place usually. Then again, that's also because I have experienced so many bad and glitchy games thus far this gen to justify paying MSRP for most.
LOL ITCG you're just a real true to life 100% CAG, that's why your purchasing habit is like that.

Pro-tip: Never buy a game that you don't intend to keep (unless you're flipping). NEVER EVER buy a game at release that you are not so fucking excited about, that's just dumb.

The majority of people (surprise, surprise) keep games that they like, and doesn't need trade in credits so that they could afford their hobby. Heck, some also keep titles they marginally like as long as they got it for cheap ($5 HWV RIP).

Forget renting too, Gamestop has a very gracious 7-day return policy on used games with no questions asked. Want to try a game? Get it used, play and finish it (if you like it), then return it.

*sound effects*

... the more you know.

Gamestop is not a free rental service. kthxbye.

Going to be later tonight before I can update the list. Doing some server upgrades and have very little time to sit on CAG. Should get updates done around 6-7PM.

Damn right. Although, I have broken my cheap ass buying habit maybe 6 times since I joined CAG in 2005. Otherwise, I keep an eye out for games I want on the cheap.;)
Gamestop is not a free rental service. kthxbye.
It is when you've got tons of credit and throw down pre-orders(that you cancel after release so as to not hurt people's 'numbers') while buying a newer release used to see if you'll like it enough to keep it.

I was VERY indecisive last gen, so I kept buying games I wanted to try out, playing them for a week, then returning them when I found out I didn't like them.

Even though it seems like you're 'renting' games from Gamestop this way, you're allowed to change your friggin' mind and their return policy allows for returns within 7 days on used products. Why should you be stuck with a game you hate? Just because you've changed your mind on 2-3 games prior?

I think he was responding to "Get it used, play and finish it, then return it." I believe that would constitute fraud to 9/10 people.

I used to think that.

Then the GS employees told me about the return policy. I'll paraphrase here, "You know about our return policy, right? Well, if you get home and you find it doesn't work, or you play it and you don't like, or if you play it and beat it, you can come back within 7 days and return it."

I've gone to about 4 GS' in my area and all of them have said this. All of them. Its like they want you to do so.

I've heard that from a few too.:D It's funny. They're telling you how to exploit their own return policy.

It's not fraud when the employees say you can return it for that reason within the week. It must be a company policy to say that because I've heard it at different stores and from different CAGs here. Only in Sacramento have I received a reciept that said "One time return on used items" at the top above the Gamestop address. I'm not exactly sure if that means one return per title or one return per person. I just assume they had problems with returns there.

So can you trade in an old 360, get a new one & then later return it unopened & still keep the bonus credit? I rather use my credit for something else...

*edit*

Do you need to give your harddrive? If not how much is the TIV for 20gib? Does it have to come with controller? Does it have to be official?

Just traded in some stuff for the extra $50 credit. Titles that need updating:

360
Brutal Legend- $8.75
Gears of War 2- $5.25
UFC 2009: Undisputed- $8.00
WWE Smackdown VS Raw 2010- $22.50

I ended up getting $160.33 in store credit and paid off Heavy Rain and Bad Company 2.

Ok well since this topic has strayed from it's original intent, I guess I'll ask my question again. Is it pretty much YMMV on if you can trade in more than 7 games at a time? Can you bring in 14 games and tell them you want to do two separate transactions so you can get the deal for each group, or do they frown on that. Will only let you do either just 7, or 14 all together in one transaction?

YMMV if they will do 2 seperate transactions. Probably best to do 1 transaction, then go back out to your car and get the other set of games to do the second transaction unless your store is super busy.

I traded an old console in , got the $30 bonus, went back the next week and got the $25 giftcard, the new receipt showed as a cash purchase, returned the console with the new receipt and got cash back . Just waiting on a better deal on the Elite now.:bouncy:

I plan on taking in my PSP 1000 and DS Lite to trade in towards a Wii. Will I get the bonus on both my systems towards a new wii? Also if none of my stores actually have a Wii in stock, will they just give me the credit or will they not accept my trade?

02/12/2010 Trade in-

Darksiders dropped to $12.50 today.
Dante's Inferno is only a wopping $20.00 for a 3 day old game.
New Supermario Wii still holding at $25.00 (crazy this was more than Dante's Inferno)

Does anyone know if there is a limit to the number of Bonus $10 coupons (Ones offered when you buy certain games like Darksiders) you can receive if you buy multiple copies? Can multiple $10 coupons be applied to a single order? What is the expiration date on this type coupon are there any other limitations?

OUCH!! So much for me trying to trade in Darksiders after I complete it for a decent amount back.

Then again, the game is currently $39.99 NEW, so I can understand why they dropped the TIV so low as of now. If it were still getting the $24 or so it was for a while prior PLUS the extra bonus, they would be taking them in for almost what they sell for used.

But that TIV for Dante's Inferno is seriously fucked up. A $20 TIV for a less than week old game? Yikes.

Amazon still gives $31.25 for darksiders.

If the drop to $40 isn't just a temporary sale(as Scorch mentioned), then I see that Amazon value dropping very soon as well. Thanks for the heads up, though I don't like the idea of mailing in my games for trade unless Amazon suddenly came back with their bonus offers with the trades.

Here you go:
1) The way it has worked in past promotions that used get this much extra when trading in towards this, you had to have another qualifying item. So to get a promo to go twice, to trade in two systems and get $30, you would need to buy two new systems. I can't confirm that is how it works on this promo but that is how it has worked in the past with similar promos.
2) That wont work because the promo wouldn't be activated until the system sees that you are buying a console that qualifies. Basically both the trade and the system purchase has to be on the same transaction before the promo activates on their computers.

I can confirm that you will not get a bonus trading in two consoles for one new one. The first console you trade in will get the bonus and the other one will get the shaft.

Also, the promo will trigger automatically when the clerk hits total granted that you have a qualifying console to trade in and new system on the receipt.

Here you go:
Thanks for that info, but I went over to my gamestop, and they took both my PSP and my DS Lite in for one brand new Nintendo wii.

Also in the instuctions for the employees it states you can trade in multiply systems towards the purchase of 1 new system. So if the employee gives you crap, let him look up the offer on his computer.

No one was saying that you couldn't do that. All that they were saying is that you don't get the $30 bonus for both systems. Which, they may be incorrect on. Check your receipt and let us know.

Sorry I wasn't being clear, yes I was given both promotions therefore making my PSP 1000 $65 and my DS Lite $75 after both bonus's. Now in ebgames computers, it states that you can use as many promos toward the purchase of 1 new system.

So if any of you guys are planning on buying a new system while trading in more than one system, just ask them to look up the terms and conditions in their computer system.

Not a bad day of trading. Walked out of the store with Valkyria Chronicles and a reserve on a PS3 slim since they didn't have any in stock when I went in.

Does anyone else find it funny when someone trades in 20 games and gets $100 and they put that clap gif or say "not a bad day of trading?" Just saying. I'm going to trade in 20 games that I spent $1000. GS gave me $100. I lost $900 but I think I did good. I just want to point out that I trade games at GS all the time but you never get the better deal. GS always wins in the end.

^cmon man why do u have to try and shit on peoples feelings when it comes to their trades. if they feel they had a good trade then good for them, most people on here buy games with credit they got from trading games so i dont think he actually spent $900. its cheapassgamer...most people dont buy things full price.

Or maybe they didn't spend $50 on each game. On my last trip trading in games, I left with about $110 in credit on games I spent less than $120 on. Considering I played all of them, I got a pretty good deal.

Does anyone know if GS takes in games from other countries? For example I just got L4D GOTY edition but it's like the Canadian version because it has some french under the title Game of the year edition.
