FAQ
Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Arkansas, California, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has PSP/DS values.
They stopped taking pre-orders for them quite some time ago. Any time you want a collectors or special edition it's a good idea to pre-order very early.
7 weeks before release isn't early enough?! They just announed it a month ago!

Well that $60 is probably going to go toward Heavy Rain if it comes out in Feb. as rumored. I'll just keep my Amazon preorder of the CE and CE guide.
fdkjslkgj.

i was a few days late on DA: Origins CE wasn't sure if I wanted to go for CE, the day I went in to switch my preorder they were like we stopped taking preorders a few days ago. and now sorta the same situation for mass effect, sucks for me that i always put shit off till last minute lol
As emo said, EA seems to still have a stockpile of the CE's on their store. I ordered the Dragon's Age CE the week before it came out on their site and it actually shipped the Friday before the street date. I got it the same day as it hit stores, and that was with the free shipping.

It was a lot longer than a month ago that they started pre-orders. EDIT-might want to pre-order that heavy rain now!!
Kind of a strange update, but I was just browsing the TIV list & noticed Red Faction was off. It says $14.25 but I pulled out an old receipt to confirm it was down to $12.75 as of 11/10. Probably lower now, but at least a little more up to date.
I definitely traded in Red Faction Xbox 360 after 11/10 and got $14.25 base. Sure you aren't looking at PS3?

i cant believe they stopped taking preorders 2 months before release, i thought i'd be able to hold off awhile longer... ahh well, if EA or any stores are taking preorders after christmas ill use gift money to buy a copy, otherwise ill wait for the reg. edition to drop or something

thanks for all the advice/tips everyone

Screw Gamestop if I can't pre-order the regular version of a PS3 game that's probably out in February anytime up till the week before it ships.
Also googled it and the Mass Effect 2 CE was officially announced on Nov. 5.

Very awesome! For the DS and PSP games.... $1.15 minimum is awesome! Can find some very cheap games at HWV or around the house. Hope everyone got rid of their expensive games (cuz 50% bonus is better).

Not entirely related to this thread, but what condition are the consoles at GS in? I was interested in getting a PS3 slim but wasn't sure if I should get one at GS or go to somewhere like BB or Target.

I've been wondering this myself, but the relatively modest (IMO) price difference isn't worth losing the manufacturer's warranty. I'm building some credit at GS & will probably go ahead & get a new PS3 slim.

I wouldn't buy a used 40gb system for only $80 less. Walmart might do a $50 GC next week or you might find an Amazon deal with no tax.

Traded some old stuff my kids and I will not play anymore and got a 60GB starter pack for that Arcade I got for $100 at WalMart a few weeks ago! Sweet, I hardly ever buy games at GS but I always trade in with + deals. Many times I get what I paid or better for games.
is this a decent buy for a PS3?
http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/productDetails.aspx?sku=909117

i only want one to play a few of the exclusives, Uncharted, LBP, killzone, etc.
Since you have the GS credit, you'd be better off getting a NEW slim. Killer 9 is correct. Some (not all) older models have had issues after Sony's firmware updates (not sure if they've fixed this). It's really a hit or miss. New or Used, get the warranty.

IMO, I wouldn't get a used PS3 from GS. Most people trade them in because they've trashed it somehow (or ran it near death). Think about it: The prices they can get for some of them are 3X to 4X better than what the GS TIV is unless something is wrong with it (this isn't a $5 TIV for a $60 game where talking here) . But then again, some people just want to upgrade to a Slim. Either way, you're still taking a $250-$300 gamble on a used PS3.

I also was in your situation (just wanted the exclusives and had a lot of GS credit), and after much debating back and forth (BC/Non-BC,OS Installation), decided to get a new 250gb Slim. Haven't regretted it one bit.

I know trading in two copies of the same game is YMMV, but what about two copies of a game except for different platforms? Would they be more open to that?

Still YMMV. Depends on the person you get ringing up your games. I've never tried this before personally but I know some people who've gotten rejected from trying it.

It's YMMV, but you can talk your way to get the deal.
I did this 2 times at a far away GS and it works with same games, same platforms.

Just ask the employee to try scanning the games, if the computer allows (which it does), just tell him that the computer can't be wrong.

But technically they still can reject the trade in.

Good luck.
Wanted (PS3) $4
Resistance 2 $6.25
Did you trade in any other games with those to get the $10/20 promo(since I think that's the one that's going on now, right?)?

I hope so, since those two games get $9 and $12.50 respectively with NO promos needed at Toys R'Us.:D Although they require a working game, coverart and original case anymore and in store they have a sign up saying they require a manual now.

Actually I believe this weeks email coupon that is good through today is for an extra $5 trade credit each on up to 2 PS3 games worth more than $2TIV so he prob used that. Anyway, as stated before, we should try to avoid flaming people for trades that we think were not the best value.
How was I flaming him? By mentioning that they're getting about what he may have got after TIV promo at TRU without the promo being required there to get the same amount?

I was just letting them know that they have options other than GS nowadays.:)
Edit: Ok maybe this is not really flaming but I am just trying to support the point made by jp. Also it is important to realize that without exaggerating, there are prob about 10 times as many GS locations as TRU and you still have to pay sales tax on purchases at TRU made with trade in GC. Most of us know about the other options available, but I won't say that it hurts to post the really good values you find elsewhere once in a while. That said, I still find it funny when people post "you could have got $X.xx at Gamecrazy or Blockbuster as Gamecrazy closed many locations and is not even within a 250 mile drive for me anymore and even though we have a Blockbuster in town, not all locations buy/sell games other then the occasional former rental sale.

It will be YMMV but they are not supposed to accept multiple copies regardless of system. They can get fired for breaking that policy.

:360:
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare - $9.50
Fable II - $7.25
Far Cry 2 - $7.50
FEAR 2 - $4 (big drop from OP!)
Halo 3 - $12
Midnight Club Los Angeles - $7.50

XBOX 360:

Wii:
Guitar Hero World Tour - $5.50
Super Paper Mario - $8.25

PS3:
Fallout 3 - $7.00
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune - $9.50

so pissed that Gears of War dropped and they didn't tell me it didn't qualify for the promo, I ended up with 10 dollars less than I had hoped for, I said I was trading in 2 groups for +20 bonus each, and at the end asked for the total and $80 sounded about right to me at the time, and of course when I get to the car I realize Gears of War got less than $2, which loses me $10. But OH fucking well :(
