FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.
hey guys a got a couple of ds carts i wanna trade in , new super mario bros , call of duty 4 , and more

only thing is i cant find the boxes anyone know how much they will deduct?
Depends upon your store. I don't think it's company policy to deduct for lost cases/manuals but there are some stores that will charge refurb fees. Depending upon how many stores you have near you, if they charge you refurb fees cancel the transaction and try another store. Keep an eye on them to make sure they don't charge too because there are a lot of employees that won't tell you they charged the fee.

anyone know tiv of heavy rain? i should be able to get at least $40 for it? thats about what it's going for on ebay and i want to get bad company on tuesday

I am almost postitive a CAG would buy it for $40 and then with that forty you could get it from Amazon and then get $20 amazon gaming credit
You broke your little ships.
Totally overlooked this. I figured there would be a few people that picked up on that one. Love that movie.

Not if you bought a used copy with a new one  $35.75 ... might do this later today ....
the MSRP....no

trade in value, probably not for a few weeks or so
so i can hold onto heavy rain unti tuesday and still get the $40?

DAO holding at btiv $21.25 last night.

I needed some extra Shale and Blood Dragon Armor codes for my wife (to play on a different 360)...so I bought it at Best Buy for $39.99 on sale -$10 Rewards coupon. Took the codes out and traded it back in for a couple bucks extra credit overall. Yeah!

Now lets hope COJ:BIB holds for tonight. I got it under $10 in the GF sale, but am not liking it much...so back it goes.

I should now have enough for BFBC2 pre-order, so I'll cancel at Amazon. $20 GC is a great deal, but it also requires money up-front. Plus GS BFBC2 pre-order has some extras.

Just made a phone call, and Mario Kart and Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story TIV has dropped to $10. LoZ: Spirit Tracks is still flippable, though, at $20.

Did you trade in NCAA Basketball 2k3? If so, you got ripped off badly on that because of it's rarity. It goes for $30+ on eBay. :whistle2:(
i think you have 24hrs to get it back
That can't be right. Even if that was true, it wouldn't be surprising if the GS employee ended up buying it the moment he left the store.

FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU......

i just went home last night to get it so i can trade it in. i was so happy to get 30$ for it. damn!!!!

is it worth trading it in for 15$? should i go the ebay route now?

My original launch 60GB PS3 died yesterday,(one day after getting Heavy Rain), so after busting it open to get my disc out, I thought this would be a perfect time to get a new PS3 and save some cash through this deal, here's what I traded in just now...

This is the value I got also with the Edge Card...

PSP:
Twisted Metal: Head On: $4.00
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror: $3.20
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops: $9.99
GTA: LCS: $8.00
GTA VCS: $8.80
Burnout Legends: $5.60

PS3:
Hot Shots Gold: OOB: $10.40
Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction: $12.00
God of War Collections: $12.80
Batman: Arkham Asylum: $24.00
Killzone 2: $14.40
Resistance 1: $8.00
Resistance 2: $14.40

TOTAL: $135.59
TOTAL after Edge Card, Game Informer subscription: $119.55

So overall I am very pleased with the amopunt I got since these games were just collecting dust since I already beat them all and wasn't planning on playing them most likely ever again. But go figure, the GameStop I went to and the other 2 nearby ones were all completely sold out of new PS3's. Even their website has them on backorder.
sony said there will be shortages of ps3's but i wonder if on purpose or because they cant keep uup with demand
Probably to try and make it seem like the PS3 is heavily in demand and they can't keep up with it. It's still about $100 too much for most normal consumers.

Sorry forgot to mention it was football.

damn it's a good thing i went and flipped mario kart yesterday. i would have have gone and flipped LoZ too, but this snowstorm has got me trapped at home.

What's the point of having the 25% extra if you trade it in toward Battlefield: BC2 if there's another offer (that expires on the SAME DAY) that gives you +50% on any game? Unless they can be combined, but it says right there it can't be combined with any other offer.

Same can be said for their usual trade 2 select games and get $40 off "X" deals when a majority of those games actually have give more TIV when traded separately. They just want to try to capitalize on the uninformed soccer moms and naive little kids.

Normally I wouldn't post trade-in deal coupons in this thread, but this one warrants it. Ready for abuse, especially if they drop the Madden 10 value anymore. Will put in first post as well:

Put the pre-order on Madden 11, then wait a week or two, cancel it and then move it to another game.

I need to find some cheap ass (or free) copies of Madden 10.

:whistle2:k It's $300. The Wii was $250 for a long time, and the cheapest 360 was $300. $300 is definitely not too much for the "normal" consumer, especially when for the extra $100 over the Wii and the Arcade, you get a hard drive and Blu-ray player.

Not that I doubt Sony would artificially attempt to make the demand look greater than it is, but the PS3 definitely sold well this holiday season, following a fairly long flat period, so it is conceivable that there could be a shortage of units.

And thanks for the Madden coupon, jp. Gonna have to dump my copy, now.

 Many normal shnooks are only looking for cheap game player for their family though and may(or may not) know that the PS3 also is a Blu-Ray player. They may also be like me and not really give a shit about the HD movie bullshit. So the fact it's a BR player is a waste to many.

But it did take the price drop(finally) to $300 to start really getting sales going on the system. That means that $400 was too high for many people and once sales start to lag again they'd better rinse and repeat if they want to have anywhere near the installed base the PS2 has currently.

Hopefully, both MS and Sony learned a lesson this gen, not to price their consoles outside of the range of all but the most diehard of fanboys and techno-geeks.

it should also be noted that most of the people who are 'in the know' (and recognize 300 as a good pricepoint) have already bought one. what is left is mainly the soccer moms and families on a budget (or just un-informed people) who look at 200$ vs 300$ for a mainstream console that comes with everything they need to play a new game (which, to a layman, there is no difference in ps3 vs 360 games/exclusives) and chooses the cheaper one (wii or 360 arcade).

also left are the people already with a 360 who wouldnt mind adding a ps3 to their arsenal if the price is right, [which at 300 for a console who's ability is already overlapped (mostly) by their 360], is not $300.

Why would they hold back units that would sell? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard; especially from a business standpoint and I doubt it's the case. I'm sure they're trying to make it seem like there's heavy demand so a consumer wanting to drop $300 on a new system has to wait for it or can walk out the door with there competitors system at the same price point which is readily available.
