FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.

This blows, I saw about 4 copies of those star wars republic heroes at BBV for Wii too. Is the FF 13 promo for SW on Wii dead too?

I assume so. They said some e-mail went out to deny it for the promotion. I saw a TON of copies around, and have about 4 of them still. I have a couple of other local options to look into, as well, though.

Best flip I've seen is if you can find a cheap copy of L4D2 on Craigslist like I did. I bought two for a total of $45 and traded them in for a total of $95.

i traded my ds lite in on monday to get a new one tiv is 45. i have a dsi i paid 5 for and want to get a new shinny one for my girl. the guy tells me about the xl, shows me the flyer and tells me it is 250 new, but with the promotion i get 150 for dsi and only have to pay 100 more. i thought was a good deal, till i read the fine print the dsi-xl is only 189. i called him and he aplogized and let me preorder the dsi xl. tiv for dsi is 80

I got lucky and gamestop took 4 starwars for ff13 and gow3 preorders. I paid in full so no way they should turn me down. Argh, I totally missed that tru glitch yesterday. I spent the day getting my 50 wins trophy on brutal legend, argh. Hopefully that glitch is still strong but I doubt it. I would love to get Bad Company 2 for $20 after trading in ME2.

OuCHES and OMGS - Left 4 Dead 2 (360) just attempted this but I refused, was about $14.50 (23.50 after bonus and Edge). Down from $47 with Bonus and Edge Last Night.

I told my friend to trade it in weeks ago but the idiot said he's waiting to beat his other game. He's going to end up getting like $60 less than what he would've.

What a moron kid. Not everyone wants to be a CAG, some are just dumb.

They must have gotten flooded with all the trades ins from the TRU glitch. It was all the talk about flipping the BFBC2/LFD2 combo here on CAG and then someone posted it to Slickdeals.
jeez thats a huge hit on L4D2. that's down 50% in one day? lol
I couldnt believe it and I had to have her confirm because on that little credit card machine where you can see the game and prices all I saw was "Left 4 Dead" not Left 4 Dead 2 , but since she scanned it I think it was right (as another barcode wont bring up another game) and she then asked me why I thought it was more. Just told her that's what I was told.

Same here, I was so disappointed

Why are people complaining about ME2, generally new games TIV start at $25, they gave us $35 for ME2 and then drop it to $30, then to $25. To me the first 3 weeks of that high TiV was a true bonus, it just truely showed how big it was when they added a nice 50% bonus on top of it.

Anyone have a recent TIV for Dante's Inferno on PS3? The latest one posted is from 2/24. I tried calling some stores and they won't tell me over the phone.

I just called to check Mass Effect 2 and Bad Company 2, I was told $34.50 base for ME2 and $25 for BC2, can anyone confirm the ME2 TIV? seems strange that it has gone up since yesterday, but I hopes it's true.

I got $25.00 base value for it last night($40.00 after bonus and edge). I ended up trading it in from the TRU glitch considering my TRU was out of L4D2.

:360: Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood - 10.00
:360: Star Ocean: The Last Hope - 13.00
:ps3: Darksiders - 21.75
:psp: Rainbow Six: Vegas - 3.50

Total after bonuses was 77.21

Pretty happy with the impulse GameFly purchases values. Couldn't get into BiB and will probably end up getting Star Ocean for the PS3 if I ever want to play that. No PS3's in stock :whistle2:|

Cool thanks. I got mine the same way. I was gonna play it for a while but I just don't like it.

Wow, 50% drop in one day. When you think about it though its not that surprising considering the amount they probably took in over the past couple weeks @ the $29 ($47) TiV.

Glad I turned around and got rid of the L4D2 I picked up with BFBC2 last night.

Practically the only reason I went to ToysRus yesterday was because of the L4D2 TIV. Already had BFBC2 on the way from Amazon.

I too am glad laziness/procrastination didn't get the better of me yesterday, like it usually does.

So, you think it's a bargain when they give you $25 for something and then turn around and sell it for $55? What are you? Gamestop's mother?

Word up man, cant tell you how much i walked yesterday, went to tru once during lunch, then again after work and then went to gamestop and then back to TRU again. wish I had gone back to TRU again but my legs were quite tired.

But I made my GF brother and a coworker happy so it was all good.
So, you think it's a bargain when they give you $25 for something and then turn around and sell it for $55? What are you? Gamestop's mother?
No, but it their business model, you don't have to accept it if you don't want too.

But did you really expect Gamestop to continue to give you 56 dollars for it and then sell it for 55?

That gravy train lasted for over a week, heck some people were buying from one game stop then going across the street to trade it in for 6 dollar profits. People were ordering from Gamestop.com and then trading it in for 15 dollar swaps.

Almost every new game that comes out has a base TiV of 25. Some rare games do get a base of $30, the high profile games like Halo, Call of Duty, and I'm sure FFXIII will. ME2 was one of those titles.

But those high TiV don't stay high forever, and it normal practice for the TiV to drop as they have more of the game in stock.

Every single Game stop I've stopped into the last week had at least 4 copies of ME2 and like a dozen L4D2.

Yea, I was running late on my way home from work and didn't want to head in the other direction to trade it, but now that I see that huge drop I'm glad I did. Glad it was one of those get in/get out quick trades as opposed to one where the clerk ignores you and talks to their co-worker for 30 seconds while you stand there, then they fiddle around with the scanner while talking to their co worker, then they realize they need to sell you pre-orders and an edge card before you leave. This trade took like 2 minutes from walking into the store.

Triple confirmed.
Base TIV
XBX360 - Mass Effect 2 $34

Hope you guys picked up ME2 instead of L4D2 from TRU frenzy.

The best thing about that guy's quote is the "What are you? Gamestop's mother?" line. This coming from a guy that would make sweet love to Hastings if it had all the right parts.

Riiiiiiidiculous. That's almost the same price as it costs to buy it from gamestop.com with cag16 + edge. What is that - $54 after bonuses? I'm half tempted to trade in the CE they accidentally sent me for that.
