Does anyone know of a program or a way to make a bootable copy of a hard drive? Hard drive seems like it could die on me any day ;( I tried one program (Data Lifeguard Tools) but it didn't make the copy bootable...Help appreciated thanks.

You can buy these external HDDs that you just press a button and it copies the computers HDD.

And for day-to-da backup, I would get a 1GB+ USM memory stick and use Microsoft's SyncToy program.

Sure you can. Just get one of those nifty new Blu-ray burners. Only $750 plus the cost of a few dozen blank BDs.

Or for under $100 and a lot of time you could burn about 150 DVDs.

Have you tried Acronis?

Not quite a bootable copy, but it does easy recovery. The windows server team at work uses Acronis to backup all their servers since windows likes to break on them. I wouldn't know since my Solaris boxes have been running since last year :)

I've started using it at home for backup purposes as well.

Any backup program that supports disaster recovery will allow you to load the backup to a new drive and operate from there. The first time you run a backup app it should produce a disaster recovery set. This can be the entire drive or just the portions needed to rebuild the computer using a new drive but keeping the bulk of data files separate.

Windows OneCare has a decent backup package in addition to its anti-virus and anti-spyware features. It's frequently advertised for $20.

Stompsoft's PC backup is one I've used with good results and has a lot more features than OneCare's backup section. The list price is higher but it can be frequently found at retail for $30 or less. This is often an outdated version that still gets the job done and can be updated online.
