CAGiversary!
As some of you may know, I have had a tough time with something called giant cell tumor. It recurred several times and had to be surgically removed. Recently I underwent surgery because the dotor thought my leg was infected. As it turned out, the stuff draining from my leg was actually my cartilage (or what was left of it). This is obviously bad news. Now the doctor has to rebuild my leg with plastic and metal parts, something that we did our best to avoid even though doing so would have kept the tumor from coming back. Unlike a bone graft, a prosthetic joint will not last my life time since I am only 19. The fact that I'm not a very active person might add a year or two more but the doctor isn't very confident.
So my question is whether or not anyone here at CAG has had their knee rebuilt with prosthetic parts, and if so how long did it last before breaking? My doctor is used to treating athletes and the elderly, so he can't say for sure but gave me an estimate of 1-3 years. I have read articles and what not about this online, but I haven't heard of anyone my age having this done. I don't want to grow old only to find that my leg has to be removed.
