Has anyone here ever had their knee replaced?

CAGiversary!
As some of you may know, I have had a tough time with something called giant cell tumor. It recurred several times and had to be surgically removed. Recently I underwent surgery because the dotor thought my leg was infected. As it turned out, the stuff draining from my leg was actually my cartilage (or what was left of it). This is obviously bad news. Now the doctor has to rebuild my leg with plastic and metal parts, something that we did our best to avoid even though doing so would have kept the tumor from coming back. Unlike a bone graft, a prosthetic joint will not last my life time since I am only 19. The fact that I'm not a very active person might add a year or two more but the doctor isn't very confident.

So my question is whether or not anyone here at CAG has had their knee rebuilt with prosthetic parts, and if so how long did it last before breaking? My doctor is used to treating athletes and the elderly, so he can't say for sure but gave me an estimate of 1-3 years. I have read articles and what not about this online, but I haven't heard of anyone my age having this done. I don't want to grow old only to find that my leg has to be removed. :(

wow, sorry to hear that. i think your best bet is to ask your doctor who is the leading specialist in this particular surgery. there should be someone out there that knows all about it and pioneered the surgery like 15 years ago. he'd know all the details and expectations and statistics and history. it's probably published in a medical journal too.

i am sorry to here that, i thought they had joints that lasted longer than 3 years. If they dont I am sure that in the future they will be new technology for longer lasting joints, at least now if u knee someone in the nuts they will really feel it

wow I am sorry to hear this but glad at same time. I had a knee surgery just short of 2 years ago they have advised me I need a second one and possible replacement at no time had I heard about only lasting so long so am glad to see this thread as I am not far behind you in getting done. best of luck to you
