HDMI connection on 360

I am confused about HDMI connections on the 360, why does microsoft sell an adapter to connect to the 360? I just connected a regular HDMI cable to the back of mine and I have audio and video. Could someone explain this to me, am I missing something?

I think the adapter allows you to use an optical cable for audio.

would the optical cable allow for better audio than HDMI?

It allows you to directly send audio to your receiver, instead of needing to pass through with HDMI. They should sound the same.

My TV has an optical out, so the audio goes through HDMI, and passes through my TV to spdif out.

No need for the adapter.

If your TV has optical out, don't buy the adapter.

and if your in my case and need audio output because you're using a computer monitor, i just cracked the casing off my stock cable and plugged it into my computer's audio in port, works great
