help -- how do i erase savegames?

ok i feel like this is a really dumb question, but i just got an sp and advance wars and i can't possibly find a way to erase the old owner's stuff on it. I can start a new game, but it still calls me "joey" all the time -- how can i clear that out?

I don't remember off-hand, but check the manual or gamefaqs. It's a strange button combo at start-up.
