Help me build a media server

Hey all

Help me build a media server. I am looking to digitize my DVD collection and put it on a home server that I will be able to stream data from. End result is hopefully have my whole library on my home network and ready to be played at a moment's notice.

I've been looking at different streaming options, but it seems that the Boxee Box is the way to go --- unless any one here knows of a better way.

I'm looking to build the media server/desktop -- Any help the community can give would be appreciated.

I am using Patriot Box Office. Right now I got everything on an external HDD and it works prefect. If you want to use wireless network you need to get the wireless adapter. It is also under $100
