Help! Router Problems!

My router and my modem do not communicate well together at all.
I have frequent drops in connection (some are 5 minutes and some are 5 hours) that disrupt things I'm doing for class and gaming.

If my modem is plugged directly in my computer, I have no internet issues at all but I can't keep it like that since I can't use my laptop then.

I have a brand new Belkin N router and I need some tips please.
 
1. Don't use the router.
2. Disable the firewall built into the router if it has one.
3. Use static IP's.
4. Call the router's support number.
5. Don't ask me to explain how to do any of this.
