How do I send files to different PC over a home network?

Steve Dave

CAGiversary!
I want to move some files but there are too big for email or CD.

Both PC are hooked up to the same router. How can I move files between the two?

Thanks.

If you're on a network, you should be able to just turn on sharing. Right click and hit properties. Go to the Sharing tab and check what should be the second box.

It should, but you should be sure that your network is properly secured. You probably don't want people hooking into your network and viewing your files, or doing worse.

Right click on what?

AIM/MSM don't have any limits. The file is 3 GB.

Also it wouldn't work anyways because I need to hold the files and one and run it but install on the other.

What do you need? "Hold the files and one and run it but install on the other"???

I have a linksys wireless G router, how would I go about setting up a network printer so that all my computers can communicate together and use a shared printer?

Yeah. Have the file on one PC and run the file and install it on the other PC.

This is really a new question, so really should have had its own thread but...

You have two choices:

Connect the printer to one of the computers and then share it over the network.
In this case, the computer you have the printer connect to will have to be left
powered on all of the time you want the printer to be available.

OR

Connect the printer directly to the network. In this case, you will either need to
buy a printer that has network capability built in, OR buy a network print server
like this one:

Note that this device only supports certain USB printers. Make sure that the
printer you want to network is supported.

OK Steve Dave, back to your question...

Googling windows xp file sharing yielded a page that explains it better than I ever could:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm

There are also a bunch of other good looking links there as well.

The jist of what you need to do is:

1 - Make sure that both machines are given meaningful names and are in the
same workgroup. You can set these if you right click on My Computer, then
click on properties, then click on computer name, then click on the change
button. This will allow you to change the computer name and workgroup
name. Do this on BOTH comuters. Give each a different name and the SAME
workgroup.

2 - Reboot both machines

3 - Put the file you want to share into a folder on your desktop. (it doesn't have
to be on your desktop, but lean now and improvise later.)

4 - Right click on that folder and then click on sharing and security. Click on the
sharing tab and then click on "if you understand the security risks ....."

5 - On the popup, select "just enable file sharing..."

6 - Back on the properties dialog check "share this folder on the network" and
give it a name, then click ok.

7 - On the OTHER computer open "my network places." On the left, there should
be a link for "view workgroup computers." Click on that.

8 - Both computers should appear on the right as belonging to the workgroup.

9 - Double click on the computer that contains the file and the shared folder
should appear. Just double click that and you should see and be able to
access the file.

Notes, it take a while for changes to the workgroup/network to propogate around to all of the machines. You might have to hit the F5 key a few times while viewing the workgroup computers or the shares before they show up.

If you are running software firewalls like the built in Microsoft firewall or a 3rd party software firewall like ZoneAlarm, they may block file sharing. Just turn them off temporarily until you get the file transferred. You can set up the software firewalls to allow file sharing, but we're just trying to get you the basics here right?

If this doesn't do it for you, please ask SPECIFIC questions and I'll try to answer them. Good luck.

I tried doing this, and from my wireless computer, it says that I do not have permission to view the workgroup. I am logged on as administrator. Any ideas why this will not work?

Make sure any software firewalls are turned off on BOTH computers. That is usually the cause of this error.

Remember that Win XP SP2 turns on the microsoft firewall on all network connections by default.

Don't worry about the firewall that is buit into your router, it doesn't come into play.
