How do I turn on subtitles when playing a video file?

I have the video file in my external hard drive along with SRT files which I'm guessing are the subs. When I play them on my computer, I have to turn on the subtitles manually. But if I'm playing them on the PS3, anyone have any idea how to turn on the subtitles?

Or anyone know how to merge the subtitles and the video?

I doubt there is any support for external subtitle files
