How is EA's digital store?

If you want to be able to re-download your games after 6 months or so they make you pay extra. I'd never buy anything there.
 
I would not buy anything digitally from the EA Store. As the above poster stated, you have to pay extra to be able to download games you legitimately purchased after a certain date (I believe it's 1 year, but that's still terrible).
 
You should be able to get Mercs 2 from Direct2Drive for around that price, or at least could a few months ago. I'd keep looking.

I can back it up to a DVD so no problem there.

Is there any weird DRM things I need to worry about?
