How much truth is there to the nexus between the government and the drug trade?

I've heard this thrown around before with people condemning the role of the CIA or J. Edgar Hoover with some purported domestic role in the drug trade, but I've never heard an in-depth analysis of the issue at all. I'm aware of the CIA's varied role in Latin America in the mid to late 20th century, but the historical literature I've encountered mainly revolves around issues of labor, corporations (UFCO, etc), nationalization of industries, and fears of Socialism. However, I've read nothing on the drug trade.

Anyone care to enlighten me on the subject? Or is there anything to be really enlightened about?

It's one of those things that is widely assumed, without a lot of proof. There is tons of material on it. Level1online could probably help you better.

On a related note, pick up the book "Confessions of an economic hitman", it's a new york times bestseller too ;)

It seems to me that it's an issue that will never have an answer. It seems very unlikely that the American government would not at some point have chosen to tacitly approve the drug trade by individuals or organizations in exchange for a need elsewhere in our policy given our pretty extreme involvement in the drug producing regions.

There's a documentary out there called American Drug War. It's aired on Showtime in the past year.

The high quality dvd is one of the torrents I heavily seed, and I would post a link to the torrent, but it usually results in me getting reported to the forum mods as "piracy" even though it's educational. Here's a trailer for it. Btw, I've heard a few radio interviews with John Perkins, author of Confessions of a Economic Hitman... interesting stuff.

To the OP, just remember: The Narcotics Industrial Complex & the Prison Industrial Complex are closely tied together. Without one, there can't be the other. And vice versa.

edit:

Here's a clip from Chris Rock's Never Scared, talking about the drug issue, fast forward to 5:50.

Answer: All of it.

The United States government and the drug cartels are on the same side. Sort of like the US and Saddam during the early 80s.

The US government gets another purpose to exist and another reason to beat down on undesirables. The drug cartels get cover in the case their products harm somebody while selling their products at an exorbitant price.
