I've seen the question "Is there anyway to tell what Firmware a PSP has with out opening the box?" about a kazillion times. Mods, please sticky this so we don't have to answer it anymore ^^
When you buy a PSP, the box will have a sticker on one side, which looks like this:
That red square will either be blank (and white) or have a letter there instead. This letter is the key to determining what firmware the PSP has.
No Letter/Blank: v1.50 w/ Spiderman bonus pack
A: v1.50 w/o bonus pack
B: v1.51
C:v1.52
I have not heard any reports of D or above, but if you do see one, it'll almost definatly have a v2.0 or higher firmware.
Just ask the cashier to take a look at the box before they ring it up. If they ask why, just tell them you're looking for a specific firmware. They'll almost always let you look at it.
