Since everyone is asking for people to get them one when they can't find one on their own, let's try to keep the requests to this thread here:

Dear webOS developer:

We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

Richard Kerris
VP webOS Developer Relations

It may be a futile, doomed effort, but they aren't killing and totally orphaning the Touchpad. Yeah, it's going to be limited, but it's ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! A 9.7" tablet with Gorilla Glass screen for a C-note. Hell, I'm gonna get one just cuz! There's a Kindle app, so BAM!!! $100 eReader!

Is it at least a 40"? I would have nothing smaller than that in there
lol man hats of too u brother lol - resell that thing make a profit - but im guessing some one like you with nothing better to do in the mornings would actually keep this for personal use - am I right? lol
I used to do the eBay thing back in my college days, but it's too much of a hassle and too low of a potential profit margin to deal with (in general) these days. And I sure don't want to deal with a potential Craigslist mugging. I'm a techno-phile, so this was definitely going to be added to my pile of extraneous, unnecessary toys. Also, it's the weekend! Fair excuse to sleep through the morning and early afternoon.

meh. Anyone who's been successful getting a 16GB should PM me I'd be willing to buy one off of you (with you receiving a profit of course) or if you'd be willing to do it just to help a CAG out ;)
i can't do the wait for amazon game.

even if it's 50 minutes... i hope.

Amazon already dropped the price of the 16GB and sold out of those a while ago. The one they haven't dropped is the 32GB.

Hmm.. Don't need but sort of want for the hell of it. (which probably describes most in this thread). I guess this will be my thread to watch today.

More SD hilarity... Oh how I wish I had clicked checkout when it was on my screen for $84.99 all those hours ago....................... A harsh lesson, now you've come to learn that in Slickdeals you always buy first and think later.

They actually got so many posts they started a new thread a few minutes ago because it was over 650 pages long

Yea I can relate on the Ebay thing - you dont really make a normal profit after the advertisement fees and selling fees and pay pal fees.
CL though - its possible to sell and make at least a clean profit - but then again people in there are also a bunch of low balling fuks who will even start arguing with you over the phone about the price.
hmmm... According to this review

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/touchpad-webos-tablet,2994.html

it seems like the CPU and GPU in this thing compares very favorably to the Android tablets and iPads. With HP clearing these things out like they are now, do you guys think there'll be a surge of developers making free apps (gamez!!) for this thing?
It is my hope the mod community will embrace this thing and keep it viable for a awhile. My real hope is someone figuring out how to get Honeycomb on it.

I also like how 1.6 lbs vs 1.33lbs is such a huge deal. For $450 less I will take my heavy 1.6 touch pad and enjoy it for awhile.

Be hilarious if this was their strategy all along.....pull a april fools joke in august.

That said, there are currently listings of these on ebay with bids in the $300+ range. There are a lot of people on ebay who don't really know the value of things. I wish there was a good way to discourage the whole hoarding/reselling thing

I know this too well. I was selling a complete Mass Effect Limited Edition they usually go for around $120-220

I listed it for around $120

They offered me $40 and said it was the best they could do.
Never messed with CL ever again.

Would Honeycomb run that well on it given how different the specs are compared to the Android tablets in the market?
Be hilarious if this was their strategy all along.....pull a april fools joke in august.
That would be pretty sneaky of 'em :)
Be hilarious if this was their strategy all along.....pull a april fools joke in august.
Actually, it may really be their strategy. They were pretty insistent that they weren't walking away from webOS, just the hardware. They said they were going to license them out to other companies making the hardware. Since they've already decided they're getting out, it may be their way to simultaneously dump all their inventory and get a big, fast surge in tablet OS marketshare to entice developers to keep developing. Sure HP takes a big hit now, but if they can keep webOS alive it might end up being a smart move

True, but then again - you can only get 2 per order if im not mistaken, and people{me specifically} dont feel like making 10 different accounts and using the same card since it will get canceled any way once they see the same card and same name that was used on other orders. So if a person can only order 2 for himself - thats okay I guess to resell it to make some buck back. What I dont like is when people order 10-50 units of the same price from a website and not giving other people a chance to even get 1.

I'm pretty sure the touchpad has the snapdragon dualcore (like the one in the evo 3D)
Iv'e also read that the Touchpad is ideal for android because the specs are better than most of the tablets.

Don't hold your breath at these words. It's 3:30 am >.

I am not going to even pretend I know the answer to this. My hope is for something that the community can continue to support after HP. Maybe HP make webOS open source but I highly doubt it. I will be rooting for the hackers in this instance.

Btw, someone already got ubuntu working on this thing: http://forums.precentral.net/webos-development/289421-ubuntu-touchpad.html

I'm sure it's just a matter of time before someone figures out a way to get honeycomb on there. Although, reading the ubuntu thing, it really doesn't sound trivial at all.

That pisses me off as well. It's just not right.

It's almost more fun browsing through the threads and reading what people have to say than attempting to buy the darn thing! I think I'll try my luck later today looking for it in stores.

Here's hoping that there'll be a strong mod community that develops to help extend its value!

I just thought of all the Price matching I can do with this thing now. It "should" make it easier to walk into Best Buy with the web page at my fingertips.

i searched bestbuy.com for inventory at local stores and it shows unavailable. so is this accurate or does the stock locator for these two skus just not work for everyone?

the two skus are:
2842092 and 2842056

Somehow I was miraculously able to get one "ordered" on walmart.com for in-store-pickup. Talked to the manager on the phone, said I'd rather just go in and get it, he says, "We cannot match online prices." I say, "It's fricking $99 dollars online, on your website. I guess I'll just place my order then.." Why does wal mart have to be so Ghey.

I just talked to another Walmart and they said they will not be selling them a discounted price. They are aware of the price reduction but they won't honor it. I don't know if this is by store or not.

Strangely, I just ordered one from Walmart.com and have it set up for store pickup. I am just waiting for the confirmation. I am curious to see if they will at least honor the website order.

Its not walmart - its the assholes who work in there that are the problem.
Anyone know for how long HP will be maintaining their app store?
I don't know. They may not be killing their app store b/c webos is still going to be their platform for smartphones like the palm pre, etc. right?

Yeah I got that vibe. Oh well, right as i placed my order, the manager said, "The one i'm looking at is $xxx dollars." So they better have MY touchpad ready for pickup in 4 hours, or I'm busting some kneecaps.
is it me? I just dont see the value in a dead product. What am I missing here?
The lackluster app selection aside, the thing still works as a web browser, aggregated PIM (contacts, emails, calendar), music player, movie player, picture viewer, and e-reader. That kind of utility in the form-factor between a laptop and a smartphone could still be useful for the next few years. It might be locked in time, but for what it is at this moment, it's not at all terrible for the asking price. You just need to ask yourself if you need all the kinds of add-on apps from iOS/Android. If so, then buy one of those. If you're fine with what this is already being all it ever will be, then, there's a deal to be had.
It's a dead piece of HARDWARE. WebOS is still going to be a platform that HP is going to back. They're just going to third party OEMs instead of doing all the grunt work themselves. Read the interview in the link.

They don't have as many Apps as Google or Apple do they? I'd have to assume that what they have now (and the stuff that's currently in development) is all they're going to have. I really doubt that anyone is going to be licensing Web OS. Can you link me some news or an interview where this is directly said by HP executives? I just read an Engadget interview and saw no mention of licensing it. Was this mentioned in HP's earnings conference call? I thought Engadget listened to that one?
