Dear webOS developer:

We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

It may be a futile, doomed effort, but they aren't killing and totally orphaning the Touchpad. Yeah, it's going to be limited, but it's ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! A 9.7" tablet with Gorilla Glass screen for a C-note. Hell, I'm gonna get one just cuz! There's a Kindle app, so BAM!!! $100 eReader!
Amazon still shows in stock, but if you add it to your cart it gives this message:

We're sorry. The item HP TouchPad Wi-Fi 16 GB 9.7-Inch Tablet Computer is no longer available from the seller you selected. To see if it's available from another seller, click here to return to the item's product detail page.
If you refreshed your page, you'd see these have been pulled by Amazon...no longer "Sold & Shipped by Amazon."

Probably getting sent back or held for an announced lightning deal...hopefully they'll limit purchases to one.

I like how Amazon is learning along the way ;)
honestly what would you do if you where best buy? send em back to hp for no loss or sell em at huge loss? after the discontinue is over and they send all of them back to hp you will probably be able to buy the ones from best buy straight from hp.com. after all they don't want them just to collect dust in a warehouse
I don't think you quite understand how the supply channel works...So HP discounted the price of the product. What they do is they work with the retailers to provide them a credit for each one they sell. So Best Buy would not be selling them at a loss. They would be selling them at little to no margin, just like they do with Apple Products, Gaming Systems, and certain other items. BB makes about $12, if that, on an iPod Touch, for example.
Lol at the hoodrat at my Best Buy saying NO an hanging up on me when I asked if they had any HP Touchpad tablets in stock. What a pathetic chain.
the lady who picked up the phone was also being an ass, "do you have any hp touchpads?" "NO", "none at all, even the 32gb?" "NO" hang up...

WTF...went over my head man.

Nevermind...jesus...some people...this thread...or "deal" just fails at humanity.

I bet they were distracted by the flipper jizz in their pants and missed a decimal.

well obviously someone did the calculation at Best Buy and it was more economical to send them back for a refund than to continue to sell them, even with credit back from HP. So... there's that. Look, we're all trying to get a tablet so it's not like you're the only person who is missing out. Stop crying about best buy.

Just got off the phone with microcenter customer service and they said my order was cancelled and money will be refunded on Monday. Just my luck, I really needed a tablet before the semster started.
Ugh, still "being verified" through HP, despite them charging my card now for both of them. If anything screws up at this point I'll be extremely displeased.
It took my order about 16 hours to switch from being verified to "processing order"...they're probably slammed with orders, be patient I suppose, and keep those fingers crossed...

Crying about Best Buy? WTF? Why do you always attack me? I was trying to explain to someone who was wrong about them taking a loss on the product.

Seriously dude, I don't know what your problem has ever been with me...it's childish at this point.

Man i just missed snagging two at Office Depot.Guy was cool and said a lady came 25min before i did and bought the last 2...oh well they will start popping up online sooner than later...

What makes you think HP agreed to credit Best Buy fully if they sold them rather than returned them? Given how many retailers are pulling them, I'm assuming the return credit was better likely because HP doesn't want the warranty liability for these and are actively discouraging retailers from selling their stock.

Since I am an android person I don't have that much experience with WebOS. Does anyone know if there are any alternative App Stores out there for WebOS. There are a couple of things I want to buy like the comic reader. But with HP dropping support for the Touchpad, I am hesitant to buy them directly from the HP WebOS store since you would be relying on that store if you had to download again in the future and I don't see a way to make a backup of the file.

Or it could be that Best Buy didn't want a bunch of dickhead SDers in their stores. :)

There are more retailers selling through than pulling. And all of those retailers are getting the credit from HP. That's how retail works. When manufacturers drop the price, they credit back. It's basic supplier/retailer relationships. I'm not assuming anything...do any of you really think that Office Max and Staples and Office Depot are just going to take a loss of $300+ per Touchpad sold?

What you're failing to understand is that while nobody is taking a loss, perhaps Best Buy has made the calculations and decided it was more beneficial for them not to sell them and return them instead. Meanwhile, OM, Staples, etc decided it was more beneficial to sell them. Ever thought of that?
Do they still have HD-DVD player?
Funny, you say this like owning a piece of outdated tech is bad. If that's the case, I am curious, are you trying to get an HP TouchPad w/OS?

BTW, I still like my HD-DVD player. Still one of the best upconverting players out there, and HD-DVD lots are dirt cheap on Ebay.

I'm not failing to understand anything. If you read my post, I'm saying it doesn't make logical sense because Best Buy is missing out on supplemental sales of high-margin accessories. Could there have been a better deal, since they seem to be stocking more than like 5 units per store? Of course. I'm not saying that they're situation couldn't have been different. I'm not the typical mindless zombie here bitching without a basis. I know what the fuck I'm talking about...I've worked in the industry, on both sides.

both models are showing in the Small Business Section but give you the same 'error' when you go to pay, so the likelihood it's a website problem is high

I had my 32gb order accepted last night before they went OOS but it's still being verified, hope they are just waiting to see if they have more stock due in to send out

If HP was planning on sticking to enterprise services and e-commerce, this is a bad omen. Then again, this is like the Fukishima earthquake/tsunami/nuke meltdown. Any one or two of the factors wouldn't have slagged the plant, but it was a perfect disaster of several things that piled up and WHOA! The cart just showed! BUY!

I'm a jerk huh? Is it because I stole your lunch money? Grow up. You posted a referral link to a different, and arguably competing, website and I called you on it. You obviously knew you were in the wrong because you fixed your mistake.

I didn't insult you, I merely pointed out that it was bad form to post referral links for a different website that at the very least has annoyed quite a few CAGers because of the amount of hoarders and scalpers exploiting this, and other deals.

The way I see it though, is that unless they were reaally taking a huge lose then getting more people into the store = always a good thing. Having people come in asking for these all day always presents the opportunity for them to purchase something else or something along with the TouchPad.

On another note I've been trying to download the update since about 12pm, haha... says it's about 35mb or something and it's still only around 1/4 of the way done. Been downloading apps and stuff and going back to the OS update periodically.

I'm going through the apps right now, the SNES emulator works perfectly (prolly better for RPGs then adventure games where you need to push multiple 'action' buttons at the same time).

LMAO...there's now 4 posts in my local Craiglist of others warning of scalpers & flippers.
Anyone else who sees the same should do the same :)

This may be just the cure for hoarding and flippers with others voicing their practices within their outlets.

I wrote a review on eBay years ago for the Vista Beta warning others not to buy one and instructions on how to get it for free...shame you can't contact bidders any longer.

Holy shit there's an SNES emulator? How long until we see bluetooth gamepads working with this thing?

In theory yes. But unless someone knows the numbers Best Buy is modeling, it's hard to argue against their decision, isn't it? It's not like they're a bunch of hayseed ebay resellers. We may not like them much but they do have some experience in retailing.

Good news on that SNES emulator. That's one more thing I'll use it for. Sweet.

It loaded up for me, and maybe I was just doing something wrong...but the only controls that showed up were the digital pad on the left. No start button no buttons, nothing else.

Did you have to do something special like take it out of full screen mode somehow?

While it is true they're a big corporation and it's hard to question them. I honestly can't help but feel like it's just to kinda shove it in HP's face. I mean Best Buy has been VERY public about their distaste for the fact that they haven't sold very well.

On a positive note for a lot of people, once HP gets them back they should come back into stock.

You can bring up the menu and choose from like 12 different controller options, I picked like #4 with all the buttons visible on the screen...hard to control Mario World though with the multi-action buttons needing to be pushed.

I'm trying it out with Mario RPG right now, very cool. :)
