Dear webOS developer:

We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

It may be a futile, doomed effort, but they aren't killing and totally orphaning the Touchpad. Yeah, it's going to be limited, but it's ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! A 9.7" tablet with Gorilla Glass screen for a C-note. Hell, I'm gonna get one just cuz! There's a Kindle app, so BAM!!! $100 eReader!
Maybe these companies will now figure out that a decent tablet with a 10 inch screen for around $250 is what people want. A super high end contract attached tablet for $600 isn't. That is unless it's called iPad.

Bingo. If someone came out with a decent tablet at the ~200 price point that actually worked, people would buy them like crazy....of course then they'd nickle and dime us on software for the things
Software is where the real bread and butter is. People spend hundreds on app impulse buys, which is probably one of the reasons HP dropped the hardware, since there's much less overhead for apps. Parts alone, tablets cost roughly $250-300 to put together. When you add non-robotic labor, advertising, packaging, shipping, distribution, selling, etc., to the mix, that's when the price point jumps.

I wouldn't predict a Googlezon tablet to enter the market below $300. But considering the HP fiasco, and the idea that HP may have second thoughts about dropping hardware, and amazon facing issues with their tax-evasion schemes, $300 might be wishful thinking.
If I were a scammer/hacker I would have made a spoof of HP's site and make them available. Idiots are clicking on any website that sells this product for 99.99. "Zones" ha yea right I'm not touching that
Yeah, it would be easy for someone to set up a fake retail site and collect thousands of credit card numbers.

Also, someone could shut down a site by posting on SD that they have Touchpads in stock.

just wondering, if someone that has one of these already could tell me how well it runs flash based games, from something like newgrounds or kongregate or the like?
Called Kmart yesterday for a price adjust and was told it's in process. This morning, they charged me the full $499.99 plus tax & handling. Time to call them again...

On the plus side, it hasn't been cancelled yet.
Make sure to refer them to their own damn website. It shows the price drop there.

Mine says Not Yet Shipped and gives a delivery date. Not much, but it hasn't been cancelled yet. I placed it about 6:30am

From Newegg's help page:

Important information regarding HP Tablets.
If you are contacting us regarding HP Tablets, we currently have not discounted these products beyond the price currently shown on our website. If you would like to be notified of any changes, please use the "price alert" link on the HP Tablet product page so that you will receive an immediate e-mail if there is a price change.
Thank you and have an Eggcellent Day!

For what it's worth, Insight's stock counter has gone down to 5711 now but still no price drop.

For an HP Business Partner it's pretty ridiculous they haven't reduced their prices.

Staples is showing in stock, but when you go to add to cart it tells you they're out of stock. Stupid.
I got a confirmation email from Zones and PCCONNECTION. Even though I didnt see my Pcconnection order go through...
Luckily I used my credit card and not debit.
If both of them ship (I doubt either will...) I'll gladly sell it to someone in the Inland Empire - California, for a $10 profit.
Same thing happened to me with pcconncection, it timed out but I got an email with a temporary order number. I hope I get it
just wondering, if someone that has one of these already could tell me how well it runs flash based games, from something like newgrounds or kongregate or the like?
Well, it should *run* them, but controlling them might be an issue. I know I've tried Poker and Words with Friends on Facebook and I couldn't figure out how to drag stuff around. Works fine if you just need to tap to click something.

Update on the BN issues: I just got off the phone with BN rep they said that they oversold what was in stock and are reviewing all orders order by order. They will be sending mass emails to people who purchased at 4 PM. The email will state if your order will be shipped or cancelled.

Good luck to all who ordered including myself.
Has anybody else received a shipping notice from bestbuy.com? It says ships in 0-1 days, and the cancel option has been gone since yesterday. I got the order in pretty early, but still worried about it. My sister really wants one. I guess I may have to give her mine.
I'm in the same boat. Someone posted earlier that the status for his order was "ships in null days" or something like that and confirmed with BB that it was going to be canceled. Mine says "0-1 days." like yours. Just the fact the cancel option is no longer available gives me some hope that this order will be fulfilled. Fingers crossed!

Still waiting on OnSale but I think it's going to be canceled. Should have ordered B&N right when I saw it. Just got through on PC connection by mashing F5.

"well, i just spoke to onSale, all of the orders placed on Amazon.com are being cancelled. You should rec'v the cancellation and the pending amount on your card should be refunded within the next 24 hours. kind of what i expected. i will hold out for datavis...."

It's weird though that they already cancelled the first batch of orders placed.

So in other words, if the ones that are already cancelled aren't fulfilled, but the people who ordered subsequently get considered because they were late to the party, it's a bit screwed up.

They should cancel them all and then go via time stamp/entry.

Maybe that's why Newegg is hesitating on dropping its price.

I've been doing the same, on and off, for a few days. It's been quite entertaining. The only thing that would have made it better would be getting a Touchpad for $50 from OD.

Well hopefully they are reviewing "order by order" and allowing through the orders for single tablets before fulfilling any multi-tablet orders. Regardless of WHEN you ordered...I still think it's more fair to sell 20 tablets to 20 people before selling them all to one person.
Maybe that's why Newegg is hesitating on dropping its price.
NewEgg is getting intermittent spikes of traffic.

I'm pretty sure they are going to "strategically" lower the price here soon, soon maybe later today/tonight or soon maybe later this week.

HIGHLY doubt it. I'm actually surprised there are any left at all today...let alone five more days from now.

I've been trying to get a hold of a Barnes & Nobles customer Representative for the last 3 hours, but so far they just keep hanging up on me. They have $600 in pending charges on my card, but i don't even know if i'm getting anything!

$600? Sounds like you wanted more than one.
I called them and it means you're in great shape, but anything could happen.
That's good to hear but I won't be celebrating until I get my hands on this little thing that I've sacrificed good sleep over during this past weekend! It's been crazy and nuts but fun at the same time! lol

Excellent point DarthVicious. I ordered 2. Each single Orders (1 Wife/1 Mom). I did it right around 12:30 a.m. eastern. My orders were legit, but I did not think of those that ordered at 12:30 who purchased 20.

You calling the main customer service number 1-800-843-2665 or the 877-379-0036?

The 877 number is down til after 4 PM. Call the main number. And select option one then three "make changes to your order". That is how I got through.

It's true! The only thing that's pulled me away from reading about touchpad in this thread for the past couple days was going and waiting in line for touchpad and subsequently playing with touchpad. Even so, while waiting at walmart for 4 hours, I would check the thread on my phone every 30 minutes, and like right now, I can't help opening a new card on the touchpad to see this thread every now and then.

It would make more sense for them to do this anyway since they can then charge more shipping right (shipping for 20 orders will be more than for a single order for 20 items)? In the end though...it's guaranteed that there are going to be pissed off customers that have their orders canceled. If B&N are smart they will try to minimize the damage by maximizing the number of customer orders that are fulfilled. 20 happy customers with 1 tablet each and one pissed off person with a canceled order for 20 tablets has to better than vice versa right?

Yeah i got 4 of the 32GB for me and my family. None of them are for re-sale unless all my orders go through and then i'll be giving them away at cost to anyone who wants one.
I don't know if this is the deal of the year, but it's definitely the thread of the year! It's way better than a soap opera!
This is EASILY the deal of the year. But it's also probably the biggest disappointment of the year for a lot of ppl who aren't getting their orders in.

Maybe I just don't understand correctly, but why do people keep saying different sites and such are going to "strategically" lower the price. What's so strategic about deciding when to lower the price to $99 and having it go OOS almost instantly. It doesn't really matter if they lower the price now, or in a week, it will sell out within' minutes, all the same. I just really don't see the point I guess.

Now if they were going to wait for all other sites/stores to be OOS and then lower the price to ~$200 or so, then I could see that being strategic, as I'm sure it would still sell fast at that price...but that's not what people are saying. People are saying that websites are waiting for strategic placement at $99 which just doesn't make sense to me seeing as it's going to sell out regardless of when they lower it.

You're right. Some people overthink things and also get really paranoid about deals. If anything, you'd think the retailers would just want to get this out of the way so they can free up their servers for people who actually want to buy profitable shit.

The only thing I think holding up things is their negotiations w/ HP on how much money they're gonna get back in credit for each tablet sold vs each tablet returned.

Someone posted CompUSA had them on SD and now the website is getting crushed. Man I hate SD today.

I was lurking CompUSA this morning too hoping they would have their price updated and it was still MSRP, now it's been reduced supposedly. fuck!
