Dear webOS developer:

We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

It may be a futile, doomed effort, but they aren't killing and totally orphaning the Touchpad. Yeah, it's going to be limited, but it's ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! A 9.7" tablet with Gorilla Glass screen for a C-note. Hell, I'm gonna get one just cuz! There's a Kindle app, so BAM!!! $100 eReader!

If your BB shows stock it is because it hasn't been updated since the lines in front of the store wiped out stock 1 minute after it opened.

Seriously, waiting HOURS for anything is dumb.

To the funny people that link posting fake vendor links to a rickroll site are a good idea, my response will always trump yours. Keep that in mind, please.
I just got my Touchpad yesterday from office depot. It was packaged the same way in a paper mailer.

The UPS guy left it on the doorstep with a rainstorm on the way. He didn't knock or anything. Luckily my wife caught it a few minutes before the rain started.

Thank goodness my Touchpad works and was not damaged. I would have been livid after how hard I worked for it.
Sorry to hear that I'm not the only one, and good to know your Touchstone works OK.
My money was held for 4 days by HP SMB and Insights. They never updated me about anything directly.
I never once called or emailed them like a spoiled baby. If my package is gonna ship, it's gonna ship. Me emailing wont make them give me priority.
My pending transactions are gonna remain pending, regardless of when or if they confront me/I confront them. They will cancel them as soon as they can; they're a business, they know more about how to get things done than us.

So yes, all of those reviews are completely retarded.

Plus, it's a credit card; it's not your money to begin with.
People are complaining about debit holds, not credit holds.
I read that HP was taking a loss on each unit after the $100 price drop in early August.
Correct. My understanding is that the bill of parts on the 16GB unit was between $305 and $315. That doesn't even include marketing, distribution, R&D, warranty support, overhead, etc...They were already taking a loss just selling at MSRP and the $99 price point was just a fast way of dumping stock to end their warranty obligations as quickly as possible rather than stretching them out for additional months while they tried to deplete stock.
Sorry to hear that I'm not the only one, and good to know your Touchstone works OK.
It wasn't the touchstone, it was the actual 32GB Toucpad! I saw the package and was already fearing the worst. My touchstone, case, and keyboard are still on the way from OD. I hope they survive the trip :)
But let's be honest here...they could have priced them higher to take less of a loss, but it would have had significantly less of an impact. The extra $100 per unit is pittance compared to the absolutely priceless buzz and PR presence they've had. Have you ever heard of anyone lining up for anything other than video games or Apple products? (leave black friday out of it, it's not a specific product situation) HP just created that. Lots of it too, at multiple places around the country and on multiple occasions. Hell, they've gotten more out of this price drop than they could have gotten out of a full year of Russel Brand and the boxer promoting them, for probably about the same amount of money.

In a sense, it's a fantastic marketing move, and while it remains to be seen what they do with it from here on out, they've succeeded in stealing the headlines from Apple and everyone else over the past week.
Here's my question now. Will the $99 Touchpad affect the tablet market? Basically, will Apple/Samsung/Blackberry/others see a drop in sales because the target consumer will already have a Touchpad? Or will people play around with it a little bit, think that's cool but I should still get an iPad or whatever, sell it off (probably make a few bucks in the process), and just buy an iPad anyway?
People are slowing getting emails today, letting them know their order is put on backorder.
I havent received that email, but others have. Could mean mines ready to ship, or still processing before it gets shipped or backordered.
They are not canceling any orders.
They will wait and see if HP gives them more product first, then cancel orders.
And best of all, you don't have pending charges unless it ships.

Zones is full of win right now.
But I hear they are gonna fulfill large business orders first. You know, businesses that have ordered 100+ :D
Thanks for the info man, dont really have time to read back 100 or so pages to find this stuff. Oh well, if I get the stupid thing I'll give it to my fiancee so she can play games on it... But right now, if they cancel it, I really wouldnt shed a tear.

Sorry, didn't realize it was the TouchPad that was packaged that way. Wow. That's even more idiotic than the Touchstone or the keyboard getting packaged that way. Glad it survived the trip OK.
Priceless buzz about how HP is fickle enough to kill a product in 3 months? They aren't even going to sell hardware anymore, so it's useless buzz/PR.

Besides, a lot of you guys wouldn't buy, but I bet you they still would have sold out to the masses.
I haven't read the t&C but someone mentioned that if in you're feedback on Amazon if you mention that you gave them a low score solely based on inventory issues they will wipe that feedback from their record. I think this goes for all sellers.

I'm not sure if that is true but I tend to believe it. It is like on eBay where if a buyer mentions a dispute/case in the feedback eBay is "technically" suppose to wipe it from your account.

Just keep this in mind (or read the T&C for me) because it'd be a shame if we all hammered their account and 95% of them got erased
so has anyone bought any in west palm beach?
I don't see how. People who jump on a $99 tablet are not tablet customers. They are picking up this device as an impulse/novelty device. There is still no viable way to offer a product like the TouchPad or Galaxy Tab, or iPad at a $100 price point.

People will either be some flavor of hardware enthusiast who are intrigued by it, or people who have already made the decision that a tablet is not worth the ~$500+ investment, but are willing to take a shot at an end-of-life device just for kicks.

If anything, I would think the effect of the HP Touchpad firesale would be to create a halo effect that would spur people to buy full-priced tablets after seeing what they can do (and encountering some limitation of the TouchPad platform, since it is no longer supported, or their TouchPad breaks). I don't see this reducing sales because people buying these were never going to pay full price for a tablet before hand.
*sigh* just got back from my BB. No luck. All gone.
I think there will be an impact (not a no-one is buying an Ipad kind of impact though). Let;s be honest most people would buy a table just to surf the web (or just facebook), email and watch movies, which the touchpad does quite competently. Sure not 100% of the people who purchased the TP was in the market for a tablet (so those are not sales lost), but I[m pretty sure a good chunk was interested in a tablet and will not buy one now.

The real winners though will be WebOS app developers. Even if HP drops official support for WebOS developers will find a way to sell their apps and with the huge install base that this sale is creating they might be able to generate some revenue for themselves

I know many are still trying to get a touchpad and I really hope everyone gets what they need. With that said I cannot recommend enough the advice for speeding up the performance. It is not that difficult and if you have any tech skills it opens this touchpad up to all sorts of new stuff. the Preware/Homebrew community seems strong so even if HP decides to leave it behind I think there are people out there who will keep it alive. Follow this article (it been posted before.)

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/mobile-news/how-to-improve-the-performance-of-your-new-hp-touchpad/3866

I was really amazed at the difference. Once my sister gets hers I am going to try a side by side to compare the before and after gains. Maybe I will make a video of it...not sure yet. Good Luck!

I give up. Is it really worth clamoring over if after only 2.5 months they decided to scrap it and move on??? It doesn't matter what's wrong with it (speed, OS, battery, etc) there's a reason the Touchpad died so quickly. Yay for cheap stuff, but really, is it worth it? It may temporarily decrease sales from all other companies but there are plenty of us that can't get one, and then everyone else who want something better, that works, anyway. Oh well. ;-(

The Kalemsoft app (I got the beta from their website instead of the app store) is pretty sweet also. It cost $6 from the website (I would recommend here because you can get earlier beta updates) and $7 from the store. If you have a lot of avi or other video on you computer it is awesome. The ability to stream those videos right from your computer to your touchpad is a pretty sweet function.
Did it say in store only or were you just going to see?
I have a couple of stores that say "in-stock" but calling nets me a "we're sold out" response. :whistle2:k

Another thought... This sounds like a Day After Thanksgiving (Black Friday) preview. Keep an eye out this year... I realize this particular item won't be, but other tablets possibly?

oh...according to the inventory check on BB, i saw it was in stock at the boca on glades road 2 days ago...didnt go though. i just wanted to ask who did and if there was a huge line..haha.

but west palm (PBL) did have some in stock but theyre gone now i think. not sure about PGA.

What happens if you plug it into your computer? Maybe your charger died instead of the touchpad.

Just as a Public Service Announcement, please spread the word to all places that you post that Costco, though they did carry the tablet, sent back every single one to get full credit. Therefore, Absolutely no warehouse will have them. If the person who is the first poster of this thread could put something to this affect in the first post, I would greatly appreciate it.

Just tried that. It cannot be charged via usb (I googled). However the computer (windows) opened a window saying "Loading Drivers for Device". I'm at work and do not have another Micro USB cable here, but I have a different one at home that I will try later.

I worded mine as follows:

I purchased the HP Touchpad on Sunday, the 21st, and never received a single e-mail response for 3 days. My money was held the entire time with no word on my order. I can understand having a lot of orders to process, but holding onto my money for 3 days without telling me anything is not how you win me over. Will not be buying from OnSale in the future.
Mine died and will not charge. This is not good.
I would try seeing if a local computer repair shop can fix it for you. That's where I go when I have problems with my electronics (unless I can fix it myself).

And a good question too, which is difficult to answer. I'm going to say that it will take away more from the low end Android tablets more than anything, and hurt Android tablets more overall than it does Apple. Android tablets, save for the Sammy 10.1, don't carry the same 'notoriety' that the Apple one does, so people aspire to own that, regardless of if they got a $99 Touchpad or not. It hits the hardest in the middle, for example, where people who wanted a tablet were probably buying the Acer for $400 w/ a $100 Target gift card because of the value proposition - it's not Apple, but it's half the price and 95% of the functionality (depending on your iOS perspective). The curve on this will be difficult to predict though, and will only be able to be seen in about 45-60 days, honestly, when more data becomes available.

Either way, I don't think it's going to affect holiday sales of the iPad - Apple is going to be their own worst enemy on that, with the late-year release of the next iPhone, which will probably take a small chunk out of prospective iPad2 sales.

This wasn't just about their inventory issues. This was about haw badly they managed the problem. Took 3-4 days to cancel order and getting in touch with them was impossible. There are also a lot of reports about people ordering after some of us and they still received theirs. I don't have time to write my complaint yet since it's probably going to be a mini essay and I have to leave for my final. As long as I can get a TouchPad I would be willing to fail my exam... Well not really.

Amazon will remove feedback only in the following cases:

 1. The feedback includes words commonly understood to be obscene or profane.
 2. The feedback includes seller-specific personally identifiable information, such as e-mail addresses, full names, telephone numbers, etc.
 3. The entire feedback comment is a product review, such as "The Acme Super-Widget lacks the sharpness and speed of the Acme Ultra Widget." However, if the feedback comment is only partly a product review but ALSO contains feedback about the seller's service, such as "Seller's shipping service was very slow, and the Acme Super-Widget lacks the sharpness and speed of the Acme Ultra Widget," then the feedback would NOT be removed.
 4. The entire feedback comment is regarding fulfillment or customer service for an order fulfilled by Amazon. Feedback reviewed and determined to be relating explicitly to fulfillment and customer service for an order fulfilled by Amazon will not be removed, but a line will appear through the rating and the statement, "This item was fulfilled by Amazon, and we take responsibility for this fulfillment experience" will be added.

No I understand. Again, I'm not even sure if I'm correct but I'd just hate for people to 1 star them and write a quick sentence about how they never received the item and then have Amazon wipe that feedback score. I'm not sure about Amazon as I've never sold there but I know eBay has protected some large sellers before (namely TRU) and completely wiped out most of their negatives after a situation like this (obviously on a smaller scale)

Well, I disagree with your ass.

I was successful on getting walmart to price match best buy for their Touchstone, so I get one for $40. If anyone in San Diego was looking for Touchstone chargers, I was able to talk to one of the Best Buy managers who said there was going to be a massive shipment of chargers coming in today or tomorrow in the afternoon at the Miramar Best Buy.

Just got a 32gb from Bestbuy. They sold out of the 16gb before I got there. They had 5 more after mine and about 10 people showed up as I was checking out. I really wanted the 16gb, $99 is easier on the wallet to my wife than $150. My buddy will buy it from me if the wife complains too much.

Also this item cannot be returned to Bestbuy and they wrote that on my receipt.

I hope people take a decent amount of time to write their complaint. I feel like Amazon would not remove the feedback if it is deserved. As big a presence as OnSale could have in the Amazon marketplace Amazon would not care if they lost the revenue they get from OnSale which is probably less than .5% of what Amazon makes every year. Now I really have to go or I am going to be late...

Not true. You can leave negative feedback for almost any reason, as long as it isn't a product review, contain personal information about the seller or contain explicit language/threats.

I had a user cancel his order 30 minutes after ordering, and then two days later leave me a negative because he thought it was never cancelled. After three attempts, Amazon refuses to remove it, despite me not even being involved in any of the process of that order.

Just as an FYI, the Best Buy store in Muncy, PA does NOT have either the 16GB or 32GB tablet in stock even though the stock tracker states that they do. I got a runaround from a customer service rep who stated that they do have them but that they are all "accounted for" via preorders. Last time I checked, you could not count preorders as "available stock" via their website.
Did it say in store only or were you just going to see?
Yeah, it said In-Store Only. I called and they said they were sold out but I still went there. A sign on the front of the store also said they were sold out. Still wasn't convinced. Roamed the store for about 15 minutes trying to find it hidden somewhere to no luck. And on the way out heard two employees mocking someone who just came in and asked about it.
