I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

Well, I'll be. So much for all of my local Best Buys on this front, then. Sunday is going to be quite interesting, I'll bet.

I'd say probably not but it never hurts to ask if you're in one of the stores that will be doing this sale. The manager may have latitude to say yes in those stores.
 
Three stores in my area are closing out their anime, though I'm curious why the store closest to me isn't on the list. I guess it does well with anime sales.

Holy shnikes, got one real close to me... gonna see what they have, last I checked they didn't have a lot that was my speed, but definitely gonna be in there on the 1st.

And if I buy it now will they let me adjust the price later?
 
fuck, I was going to say "of course there's not going to be a single store remotely close to LA that is on this list...and at first glance that was the case, as only Compton (LOL), Northridge, and Long Beach were listed, outside of some inland/909 stores.

But then I saw that the Westwood, CA store is on the list and I'm just scratching my head. The store right in the heart of Westwood and a 5 minute walk from just about anywhere on the UCLA campus is on this list? How is that possible? There are probably more anime watchers there per capita than anywhere else in the country. And the Irvine and Jamboree stores on the list too??? But then it actually might make sense, since there are a lot of other sources for anime in Westwood Village and close by...not to mention college students are far more likely to be getting their anime for "free".

This sounds really good, but damn...I bet the Westwood store is going to get blitzed.
 
I've got two in my area. And it's actually a good move on their part, because the McHenry,Il store by me is so knee deep in Larry The Cable Guy fans, it could crap Toby Keith.

i hope dbz is on the list for cuts, though i doubt it. need to complete my collection with season 2 and 3.
 
The only ones even in my state are on the other side of it. I guess that's good and bad- good becuase my local BBs must sell decent amounts of anime so they'll keep carrying it. Bad because I get no clearance. Ah well.
 
Out of 5 local bestbuy's not a single one is on that list. Nearest is about a 1.5 hour drive from Miami I think so i guess i'm out of luck on this one.

To warn people their strategy won't equal huge savings for us. Bestbuy often charges MSRP on anime and its typically 20-30% off for most stuff already from places like rightstuf,DD, etc, factor in stuff like DD sales and you will probably find alot of stuff for VERY similar prices. Just make sure to do your price checking before buying anything and you should be good though.

Still some potential here for good savings.

I'm always intrested in boxsets if anyone who goes wants to jot down names and prices and post lists for us that don't have stores closing.

I'd really only be looking for the Gundam Movie Trilogy Collection or the Robotech Protoculture Collection, though I'm not sure Robotech really counts as anime.

what are you talking about? the Doral store is on that list (about 10-15 min west of MIA) as well as fl city location (45-50 minutes max if you live anywhere near the turnpike in dade county, unless there is an accident)

i live by the fl city location and work by the doral location (across the street from international mall)
 
Sweet, now I have a reason to get rid of my best buy gift card i obtained from my sfiv pre-order fiasco. Also good to see this is starting on a Sunday which means I'll be able to get first dibs as I won't be at work :)

Yea I just read that. Hopefully they will get a finalized list up before the date so that we don't waste our time going only to find out the store has no sale.
 
Wow this fucking sucks, Best Buy is my top store when purchasing anime. They have pretty much everything and usually at cheaper prices. Looks like online will be the way to go in the future, bah humbug!
