A Heartfelt HELLO to all my friends at CheapAssGamer!

I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

Here's the listing of the 400+ stores scheduled to run this sale:

From ICV2.com news:

"Best Buy’s Anime Close-out Stores March 1st to 21st

Published: 02/20/2009, Last Updated: 02/23/2009 04:45am

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

Here's a comprehensive article on Best Buy's new ANIME Strategy as mentioned at the top of this thread:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-20/best-buy-to-change-dvd-strategy

Finalized list: here.

I've got 2 stores in my area so hopefully I'll find some stuff of interest.

Also, animaniac provided this coupon which can be used with this sale:

Nothing new to add, but today I'm still bitter about them rejecting Blu-Ray anime purchases.

I tried 3 stores, all refused to override them. It makes me upset that Best Buy is so inconsistent about including them. It is such a huge waste of time and energy to drive around and get rejected because the ad says one thing, but scanner says another. My BB managers ranged from making things up, to admitting risk-aversion, to outright saying that anime on BD is "not anime, it's a Blu-ray". Is the silent majority running into this false advertising, or did most people have no problem taking them up on the advertised deal?

Curious about the percentages by demographic.

the san jose store had no problem adjusting Akira Blu ray for me yesterday

I got the Mushi-Shi starter pack for $7, but it only has the first 5 episodes. Should I return that and get the complete series not having seen it before? Also could use some opinions on the devil may cry series and the ultimate hellsing series.

(also jealous of those who got 5 centimeters per second)

Went to the Bee Caves yesterday and got Ghost in the Shell SAC for $9.99(story to follow) and Afro Samurai : resurection for $12.50.

So sunday i head over and check out thier anime section. Not too much for and older anime fan like myself...but i did find the 2 above i mentioned. So i take them to the counter and Stand alone (normally 39.99) rings up %50 off but Afro doesnt.
I point out that mistake and the clerk wants to see the sale. Ok i show her and she calls a manager up to discount it. While she was discounting that the clerk pointed to the SAC and said she should discount that as well. I of course said nothing :D .
So in the end i got SAC for %75 off.

I think the moral of the story is ...try and buy Afro saumrai when you purchase stuff and you might get a manager who doesnt pay attention.

Thanks again Speedy!

From the Beaverton, OR location

Gurren Lagann Part 1 (limited edition)
Elfen Lied
Rumbling Hearts box set
Fruits Basket box set
Death Note box set #1 of 2
Full Metal Panic!/&Fumoffu box set (aka Heavy Metal set)
Full Metal Panic! Second Raid box set
Outlaw Star
Cowboy Bebop
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya box set
Fullmetal Alchemist 1st season (going back on the 10th for 2nd hopefully)
Code Geass parts 1 and 2 (of 3, season 1, both non-limited because there wasn't a limited part 1 there, and I was afraid the limited part 2 wouldn't have a package inside with the same awesome Kallen picture)

All for $284.37. I had to restrain myself a little, put back the Fate/Stay Night thinpak, didn't invest in individual volumes of Lucky Star, and managed to keep from getting enticed by pretty covers of series I've never seen like Negima. Disappointed that they didn't have Gurren Lagann part 2 limited edition, Chrono Crusade, Familiar of Zero, Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh, or Chobits, but I suppose that saved me a hundred dollars that could go elsewhere (like the rest of Code Geass and Gurren Lagann online).

My lowest savings compared to Dvdpacific and Rightstuf was about 9 dollars on Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, and Rumbling Hearts, while my highest savings was 19 dollars on the Death Note box set, and everything else between about 10 and 15. As a very conservative estimate, I saved over $130 compared to if I'd bought it online.

If anybody finds 5 centimeters per second on dvd/bluray, I will buy BOTH from you! PM me if you manage to find it.
the san jose store had no problem adjusting Akira Blu ray for me yesterday
The San Jose store refused to override for me. The media "manager" agreed that they should be included, but the store manager denied the override.

What bullcrap! How ridiculous is it to pick and choose, even at the same store!

While Best Buy sets themselves up for this kind of thing all the time, I truly don't believe not including Blu-Ray as "false-advertising"... I just think they wanted to 50% their anime section and didn't think of animes in the blu-ray section.

The problem is, corporate should be on that right away and issue the corporate-wide answer and policy.

Hey guys. Heres a little tip.

Someone already mentioned this in an earlier post, but, if you find an item on-line that says its out of stock for that location, go to the BB anyway and check it out yourself. In my case, the website said Witchblade was out of stock, but, I went to the store and found 2 copies left.

Also, check out the DVD stand near the checkout line. I found more anime there.

I didn't go crazy for my haul:
Rune Soldier
Elemental Gelade
Outlaw Star
Witchblade

Crappity Crap! I should not have bought anime, but couldn't resist...came home with:

Negima Complete Collection
Tenchi Muyo GXP Complete Series
Ergo Proxy Complete Series
Samurai 7 Complete Series w/Guidebooks
Kodocha First Season
Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid Complete Series
Space Pirate Mito and Aoi & Mutsuki Complete Collection
Phoenix Complete
Gurren Lagann Set 01
Red Garden Collection 1
Rumbling Hearts Complete Series

Total Price after tax $199.97

To keep it under $200 I put some stuff back including 3 seasons of Yu Yu Hakusho, Elemental Gelade, Coyote Ragtime Show, Elfen Lied, School Rumble and some others.

I remember someone (possibly Shrike, but I'm not 100% sure about that) once saying that the Best Buy Store locator is very conservative, and will only say an item is in stock if they have 3+. Unfortunately, I didn't find any of the OOS stuff I was looking for, but it doesn't mean others shouldn't bother looking for it at their stores.

It was really quite simple...
You hand them Afro Samurai BD first since its does ring up at half off.. Then when Afro Samurai Ressurection BD and whatever other BDs you have don't take 50% off... You say "well that one did." Then they get a manager to drop the other BDs manualy. Today I got..

Afro Samurai BD $10
Afro Samurai Ressurection BD $15
Vexille BD $12.50

They didn't have Akira, Ghost in the Shell 2, or Samurai 7. They did have 2X Gunbuster vs. Diebuster. I should have grabbed just to sell.

I went to the BB in Delafield, WI and got Bleach Vol 1, Death Note Vol 1, Full Metal Panic complete series and Akira on Blu Ray. I got the last Akira there, and it rang up at full price, I told the cashier that it should be 50% off and he got a manager, the manager didnt even look at the blu ray, she just put in her numbers and left.

Went back to Bestbuy and picked up the last copy of :br: Akira for $17.50.
Dont know how I missed it the first time around.

Went again to my local Best Buy in Tenleytown, DC.

Got Desert Punk, Kiba, Vexille, DBZ Season 1 all for $60.
They still have about 5 copies of Witchblade collection, and The Girl who leap through time. They almost have everything. Still don't know if I should have picked up Mushi-shi.

If it shows up as available for in-store pickup ordering on BB.com, there's 3+ of them in-stock at the time you check. If it shows up as not available for in-store pickup ordering, then there's 0-2 of them on-hand. That's to make sure they don't have to pony up for free shipping on an item that shows up as NO PICK, when they can't find it. Plus, an inventory count of 1-2 for an item is pretty universally within in the realm of an inventory glitch about in-stock status.

If you get the 7-digit SKU # from the item URL and call the store, someone can check in RSS to see if it's really in-stock or not, as RSS is updated in real-time. The BB.com website info is also pulling from RSS, though it always has that buffer in there when it gets to less than 3 copies in-stock.

Wow, the Forum store (Ft. Myers, FL) just opened last summer. Not much time to give anime sales a chance.

Damn. Wish the Bloomington, IL store was doing this. I'd love to get Witchblade, Yu Yu Hakusho, and maybe School Rumble.
If you didn't like Elfen Lied, perhaps Beyblade or Hamtaro would suit your tastes better.
Wow, the Forum store (Ft. Myers, FL) just opened last summer. Not much time to give anime sales a chance.
Pretty much the same with the Winter Garden, FL store. I did manager to score Akira (Blu-Ray) and 5 Centimeters Per Second (DVD). However the store was loaded I just didn't want to go balls to the wall.

I just got back from BB, and made out like a bandit. Complete Kashimashi, School Rumble 1-4 Box, and Rescue Me Mave-Chan for about $20.

How, you ask? This sale stacks with the $3 Chex Mix coupon, and it stacks in the best way possible: the $3 is taken off AFTER the 50% discount.

You are just like me, I tried to buy Gunbuster vs. Diebuster Blu and Akira Blu but got shutdown(561 Bestbuy Mayslanding NJ) The girl told me" this is Bluray, not an anime" WTF!

The BB's store availability has been consistent with me. Typed in Yuyu Hakusho website showed in stock and sure enough they were at the store. Only one copy of each season though.

Is Trigun any good? The only Animes that I know of are DBZ, YuYU Hakusho, and Gundam. My BB didn't have the Gundam series that I like.

Same with the Clovis, CA. location. It's only been around since, I think, Fall.

Ugh I just walked out spending $120. I could have easily spent another $120, but I'll hold off until I get paid on Friday and see whats left.

I ended up getting Full Metal Panic!/Fumoffu? thinpack ($32.50), full metal panic second raid thinpack ($25), shana thinpack ($25) and all of gurren lagann ($30).

Trigun is one of the BEST EVER made . An absolute must for any Anime fan !!!!!
So much for this news making my day. Went to the Muncie, IN store and it had been picked over pretty heavily. Mainly went in looking for stuff like Rahxephon or Excel Saga, but all that was left were things like Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist and a couple Ghost in the Shells. Disappointing day, to say the least. They did have the little 50% off signs though, which is nice.
I stopped by the muncie store tonight after going for a trip down to the noblesville store, muncie has been picked clean. The noblesville store still has a bunch of stuff though.

My haul i picked up:
Afro Samurai blu ray
Afro Samurai Ressurection Blu Ray
Vexille Blu ray
Burst angel set

Same thing as everyone else, 1st season came up half off, but the clerk just overrode the other 2.
thats good to know...thanks!
No problem , but still go for it! Many people, including me, are having no trouble getting it. Its been recommended to try and get Afro Samurai on Blu-Ray (because it is 50%) and then make the case with the other anime that you have on Blu-Ray should be 50% off because Afro is...

Are most people who are saying that their stores are picked clean know that the stores had a lot of stuff to begin with?

I'm not sure how popular this sale is, but i was at BB on Sunday, and won't be able to get back there until Wednesday afternoon. I was hoping nobody would care about this sale so i could still have a good selection when i go back, am i wrong?

On Sunday just 4 hours after opening in my area, the section had been pretty much picked. Things that I had scoped out on Saturday that had 3-5 were down to the last ones on Sunday. There was still a lot on the shelf, but finding the complete series ones (like Samurai 7, Cowboy Bebop, Ergoproxy) was hard. All of the ones I picked up were the last complete series there, and thank god I got there a minute or two before some of the employees from GS. I was holding some shows they were looking for and they were disappointed when they saw them in my hands.

I'm hoping maybe to find Death Note or Trinity Blood when I go tomorrow. I'm not getting my hopes up though.
Damn. Wish the Bloomington, IL store was doing this. I'd love to get Witchblade, Yu Yu Hakusho, and maybe School Rumble.
The Bloomington store isn't, but the Decatur (Forsyth technically) one is (only about 50 minutes south on US51). I stopped there on Sunday morning and they had literally 10 crates of overstock up by the checkout in addition to the stuff on the shelf. If you can make the drive it might be worth checking out.

I'm pretty certain they had multiple copies of Witchblade as well as School Rumble. None of the other stores (I stopped at 3 on my way home from a visit to my parent's in Decatur) I went to had the overstock up front like this one did.

My credit card company is going to love me. My wife....not so much. After a 4 year hiatus I've been buying anime since January, mainly from Rightstuf. I couldn't resist all this anime. I went to two stores and this is what I got:

Air Gear Box Set $25
Black Blood Brothers Complete Box set $18
Black Cat Box Set $25
Black Lagoon 1st Season Tin set $18
Burst Angel Viridian Collection $20
Desert Punk Box set $19
Dragon Ball Z movies $30
Full Metal Panic TSR box set $25
Ghost Hunt both seasons $35
Ghost in the Shell movie 2 tin edition $11
Ghost in the Shell SAC season 1 $20
Glass Fleet Box Set $21.49
Jyu-oh-Sei complete series $21.49
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumi Box Set $22.49
Mushishi Box Set $25
Rahxephon Grand Canon Collection $35
Samurai Seven Complete series $40
Shana Box Set $25
The Girl Who Lept Through Time $11
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World Complete Tin Set $22.49
Trinity Blood Box Set $35
Tsubasa Seson 1 $25
Witchblade Box Set $29
Xenosaga Box Set $18

Didn't have any Akira Blurays at my locations, but did have plenty of Freedoms. I just wasn't about to pay $50 for 6 episodes. Anyone seen it yet?

I was able to get afro samurai season 1 bluray for 1/2 this morning. It was tagged at $20, but rang up at $10. I went back tonight to grab more stuff and none of the blu rays rang up at 50% and the stingy manager refused to price adjust them. I tried calling customer service, but they were already closed. I am just going to head over to walmart tomorrow and price match the receipt. Hopefully I can get a couple more copies.

My Best Buy still had loads of stuff, so I was able to pick up the box sets I wanted after work today. :)

- Black Cat (full series)
- Tsubasa (season one)
- Parts 1 & 2 of Code Geass box sets

Anyone know if the discount will ever go lower than 50%?

Both stores by me were pretty much picked clean of boxed sets and popular series

Picked up:
Deathnote 1 with figure 17.50
Deathnote 8 with figure $15
Bleach 1 $20
Bleach 2 with Ichigo figure $35
Code Geass 1 $15
Code Geass 2 $15
Code Geas 2 collectors ed? $21.50

5 cm/sec $10.99!! tee hee

Yeah, I noticed it on the list.

I'm about 45 miles north of Bloomington, which makes Decatur quite a bit of a drive. I do have a good friend in Decatur though. Maybe I ask him to grab me some stuff.

I went today (Charlotte Mid-Town store, the one near uptown) and picked up:

Robotech box $37.50
Death Note Box 1 $25.00
Guyver Series $25

They had a really good selection and may go back tomorrow to pick up the two death note live action movies ($10 each)
Is Basilisk worth picking up??
I'm watching it now, the first disk was a little slow to start, but the action scenes are amazing. I'd say it's worth it.
im going to post my haul in the morning...too..tired..from..all..loads...thousands..anime...zZzZzZz
Looking forward to it! :)

Dunno if this has been mentioned but the instore kioks have the reduced prices, you can probably order it from their website if your local store doesn't have it in stock. I saw Ruroni Kenshin Season 3 for $13 and the season 2 set was like $58, as well as many anime mentioned already being at 50% off. Some titles like Fighting Spirit, Saint Seiya Collection (the old one, not the recent release with the red cover) and Last Exile Collection didn't have the 50% off discount.

Even pre-orders had reduced prices, I saw the upcoming Berserk re-release at $15.

I picked up Dragonball Z season 8 and it's going back because the discs were completely wrecked, one even had fingerprints on it!!!
